Perhaps I can be pointed to another forum page- But like I stated earlier at some point- My associates and me are opening a bar/arcade/dance club type local, and I am going to be the main local DJ.
Something occurred to me, Ive built up my entire music collection (around a nice 10281 tracks) of non stop Electro -drum and bass, dubstep, tech minal, ect... and I'm going to be the local DJ there, meaning at some point, further into the timeline, I'm going to run out of tunes and have to begin playing the same tracks again. How would a Local DJ organize his music collection to such a way that every night he plays the same thing (with addition to some new "top tracks" and what not) and sounds totally different? Every night there will be new people there, but wouldn't it also be annoying to the staff to listen to the dj play the same thing over and over? I mean, one only has "so much" music, and even tough ones always on the look out for the new stuff, and swimming around Beat port and what not, at some point you will have played "everything" - or at least this is how it seems.
Perhaps I'm looking at this in the wrong way - Any feedback? Experiences?

You can play around 20 tracks an hour, around 100 tracks for 5 hours (a typical mobile day), so 1000 tracks/10days, 10,000/100days music.
so should not be a problem!

We play the same music over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again. After that, we play that same music over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again.
The way it's broken up is in sets.
You can have different sets with generally the same music but you play that music differently each time you play that particular set.
For example...
Play a old school house set followed by a electro set followed by a techno set followed by a dubstep set. (JUST AN EXAMPLE)
Play older stuff early and progress to the hottest tracks as the night goes on when the most people are there. Play the MOST POPULAR music during "Prime Time"
Wind it down towards the end of the night as you want people to leave but don't get BORING, just not as exciting.
I play primarily urban music. I play several nights a week EVERY WEEK. I play at the same clubs every week. There is only but so much popular music that people really want to hear. Your job as a dj is to play all those HOT HITS the people want to hear. Mix it any way you want to but make sure you PLAY THE HITS!!!!
I play a 90's to early 2000's R&B set, a old school dancehall set, a old school hip hop set, at around 11:45 to midnight, I CRANK the new HOT music and keep em jumping. I may break out of that with some new HOT reggae then go to dirty south but whatever I play.... IT'S THE HOT HITS THAT EVERYBODY LOVER TO HEAR AND DANCE TO.
It does not matter that they heard the same music last week cause that's the music they want to hear. It sounds different each time because of the way I play it, the random order I play it in, my personality on the mic while I play it, such and so forth.
I mix it up each night but for real.... It's the same old music each time.
Hope this helps ya.

that was good city ....... and i mean it, over and over and over and over and over and over again.......
yep , the excitement is in the air all those INCREDIBLE SUPER HITS .... they had to increase the size of
the troughs in the men's room for the overflow crowd .......
Your advice was dead on i was just laughing at how honest your assessments of the music and
what we do .....!
the hot hits are always hot for 2 whole weeks .....

I see. Good to hear. I was freaking out thinking I was behind in my collection. But this all sounds realistic and reasonable. Thanks.

I have about 26,000 tracks and I play about 2% of them in various combinations and permutations. I'd say that if you played all of your 10,000 tracks over a 100 days you'd probably be playing a lot of stuff people aren't familiar with... that's a lot of filler. You could probably get away with having a library of only 100 tracks. Remember, people are lemmings and they want to hear the top 'hits'.

I used to live on a 800 to 1000 music video since my laptop had 100gb hard drive. About once a year I had a request that I couldnt fill, a song I should of had. Im sitting at 6000 and my drive is almost full (750gb). I play house, trance, top 40, dubstep. I could shrink it down to 1500 remixes and originals and still be ok.

Some background - back in the day, vinyl DJs planned for their gigs, and depending on their crowd would take between 100 and 500 pieces of vinyl with them - essentially 1-5 record bags or crates. Even 1 bag is a lot to lug around, especially if you were transporting your own gear too.

The same and same and same and same......................... music again and again i'm playing i've been told by the girls (playing "Lifestyle"-Clubs). I play every week. The same same same same same songs are played by the house-system too, all day every day. So they are fed up by this songs.
BUT: the guests are not - cause they are not there every day.................
.................and if i try to play different music mostly i hear even from the girls "what music is this? CHANGE!" So i'm back to the same same same.......................
Fact is: there is only a limited number of song that the people are familiar with and like to party on. Period!
So don't bother about your 10.000+ Songs.

just think about it 1 song can be on the top 40 for almost a year and most songs on the top 40 stay there for several weeks. so some songs can stay hot for a long time dam "sexy and I know it" is still hot to every one at my gigs after a few bears, but owwww how I hate it by now sounds like a scratched vinyl looping for 3 mins. But point being same songs stay hot for weeks.

Thanks guys. This all makes sense. Also - on another note, way to change the subject - I know there are other forum pages where this has been discussed and continues to be discussed to no solid conclusion, but I feel like venting after an encounter with another "Dj"
The Sync Button - (here we go, ahem)
I'm to quick for this "manual beat matching" thing, even if I posses the ability to do so. I don't have time to do that mid-set while I'm sampling the f**k out of a record. This is a new era. Technology has greatly helped us. Without that sync button, dropping 4 tracks on the spot and getting them all on beat in less than 8 seconds doesn't really cut it. Not to mention, I'm using timecode but mostly midi, which is not 100% accurate.
I was told that if you "Don't do it manually, then your not a DJ "- ......... Its cheating? Isn't that taken illogically out of context? If your using an iPhone your are definitely cheating because you are not using a classic regular house phone. If your using a pen isn't that cheating because you should be using a pencil? Whats wrong with progression? I feel that everybody who took years to master that simply can't accept the fact that things are done differently and are clinging on to "all that time" it took to master that. I by all means understand and never take for granted what it is like to manually beat match by ear. Its an ability that does not come with ease at first. That will always impress me, no matter how many times I've seen it done. But I move and flow differently (I'm sure everyone feels like that)- and being told I am not a DJ because I use the SYNC button is just so........ beyond ignorant.... however, I'm dying to get other points of view on this- even though I'm pretty solid and strong on my feelings towards mixing and impressed with how much I've learned and how far Ive taken this craft.
Thanks for taking a moment to read this - :)

I think it's okay to use the sync button if you've learned how to beatmatch by ear first. What happens when the bpm's of your tracks are off and the sync isn't working?? Or, what if you're mixing 2 older tracks where the bpm's vary?? It's not that hard to learn to beatmatch by ear, I suggest you learn.

i have "2 new messages" i hope you can relate to ....
apparently, a few of us (including me) have become slightly cynical about the needs of the
paying public .....yes , you could probably get by with 500 well chosen tracks.....press 7 to delete
next message ....
use whatever you like and keep improving.... the very successful people that i know, use an
eclectic mash-up of old and new (old and new hardware, software, mixing style)
press 9 to save for 30 days

Sometimes we as DJ's get very high and mighty when it comes to being critical of our own. The reality of it is that we are in the people pleasing business. Like the O'jays said, you've GOT TO GIVE THE PEOPLE WHAT THEY WANT! If you beat match by hear GREAT. Those of us who started off spinning vinyl have no problem beat matching by ear. If you are a new jack and need the sync button, then sync away. If the people are dancing, and you are getting paid, then tell your critics to step off.

it's much easy in digital djing. in vdj we have column called playcount / rating we can set this as per crowd response to that track
so that it would be easy to play that track in your next gig with any fear
