ok so heres whats happening... i recently sorted out my music collection to remove a lot of files that were not needed, .zip, .rar, .gif, .txt etc..etc..

once this was done i deleted my database and decided to rescan the entire collection (started 2.5 weeks ago) ... today however, i have had this brainwave to rename everything to conform to a format which i personally prefer, that makes things a whole lot simpler to read and is very tidy.

the question i have is, if i rename something that is already in the database (using windows explorer to make the changes) will these items need to be scanned again to update the database?

also, if i make the changes using virtual dj, will the changes be automatically made in the database??

thanks, john.

Changes made in Explorer can go 1 of two ways:

1. You change the actual file name - These new files (new file name or path) will need to be added into the VDJ database. The old name will be orphaned and can be cleaned out in the Brouser tab on the VDJ setting menu.

2. You change the ID3 info in under the file's Properties - VDJ will still see the files, but you will need to select them in the VDJ browser and then select "Reload Tag" to update the VDJ database information.

Personally, When I change ID3 tag info I do it in iTunes. Then I have an iTunes play list that automatically adds songs that I have recently modified the information on. Then when I goto VDJ, I select that iTunes list (with all the songs I have changed) hit select all and then "Reload Tag". Much easier to update the VDJ database.

I modify Tag information allot because as I add videos, I make a Comment on the ID3 tag "Have Video" that way in the VDJ browser when I find a song I like, if it says "Have Video" and I want to use it, I just search for it. Which helps me load more videos per set.

VDJ modifications are only made to the VDJ database. They are not saved back to the tag unless you tell it to. So when you modify information, it does not need to be scanned as you made the change to the database and NOT the file.

Personally, I preffer to make all my changes to the file's ID3 tag in iTunes. That way if I ever have to delete the Database, when I rescan all the files into the new database, all of my notes are still there. Plus they are there in other playback software as well.

so another question then, if i use "rinse" i tunes cleaner, which will right data to the tags, will i then need to scan my entire database for tags also?

After scanning hard drive for bpm. Which xml files do u save and where do u place them for future reformats and installs. Please help.

You should backup the "VirtualDJ Local Database v6.xml" file that's on the root of every HDD containing songs besides the OS drive.
You should also backup the "VirtualDJ Database v6.xml" file that's located on your Documents\VirtualDj folder.

I appreciate the reply, lots. By every hdd, do u mean even externals? I only have c: drive on the laptop. It goes c:/my world/music and the folders by genre... should there be a "VirtualDJ Local Database v6. XML in root of c drive? Then in my world then music? Sorry. I do have it in my docs too though

Every HDD besides C:
On the C drive it's located inside the C:\Users\YOURUSERNAME\Documents\VirtualDj

Quick question. When I try to map my dj2go controller any way I want it. It constantly reverts back to default or doesn't map at all. I would like the a and b buttons to be effect toggle on buttons

This may be caused by permissions on your VirtualDJ folder.

Please see: http://www.virtualdj.com/wiki/VirtualDJ%20Folder%20Permissions.html

Or your Pro trial has expired - You will need to upgrade to the full VirtualDJ Professional at a discount to be able to use custom mappings: http://www.virtualdj.com/buy/index.html

That is interesting I'm gonna try it tonight... appreciate the support... good stuff! Again I have some frustrating moments but really u guys have the best dj software ever... I owe you guys alot.
