I see so many people that have all sorts of equipment. So many lights, so many monitors and projectors. It's all theatrical. It all looks good and professional and nice and everything.
It's all visual. What I see a lot of is folks having all this (see above) and not having good sound.
To me, it makes no sense to have $10,000 of visuals and $1000 of sound equipment.
Can anyone explain this craziness to me? I would think a DJ's first priority would be MUSICAL gear and SOUND. Not lights and projectors and TV's.
Maybe it's just me though....

No it's not just you!
I give priority to sound. Always have done, always will.
DJing (to me anyway) is about playing music so that people will dance. The better the sound is, the easier it becomes.
There's a point on the 'sound quality' scale where people go from dancing because they know the song, to dancing because their body cannot resist!
I know a guy that goes out with a pair of Pioneer DVJs, video mixer, three small video monitors, a large truss full of plasma screens, multiple Macbooks running video graphics stuff, video cameras to film the dancers.....
His sound? A pair of EV SX300s.

I'm with you City. I spend four times as much on sound as I do lights. Looks are cool but sound, sound makes or breaks the event.

I find sometimes DJs try to wow people with a super-duper laser light show to distract them from the fact that they aren't very good DJs.

Sound is the beef and my first priority, then come the eye candy to sweeten the musical meal...

I'm thinking about bying two EV ELX 115P and two EV ELX 118P active speakers. Would that be a good choice?
I saw them at www.thomann.es. Is that a good place to shop for DJ equipment?

thomann is always a good choice I've spent quite a few € on equipment from them and then have a flat rate on shipment for most countries.
They pack the equipment very safe so minimum chances of any damage during shipment.
anyway to the original question sound is everything. Most people that come to a club it's to have fun and dance their not going to stand around watching videos or visuals, although it will add to the effect of having fun. One bar im my town has youtube night Fridaynights how nice is that, anyway they don't have a dance floor, the quality of videos and sound only coming from a TV is not the best.

I noticed that noobs go out with more equipment to cover up their lack of ability, problem is that all their gear is aftermarket, OEM, poorly configured junk anyway and usually isn't even flightcased.
Just looks crap to even the untrained eye, lots of NLU's come on here looking to spend little on new gear when the can't even buy decent used stuff. Whats the point?

A lot of them are just starting out as bedroom dj's or college students and money is a big problem.
Ask any dj on this forum that has been at it for 25+ years if they didn't start out on a home stereo or a Radio Shack mixer.
But as for why spending on lighting and not on sound, its lack of focus.
Some smell the steak, some hear the sizzle and buy hamburger because it smells the same and sizzles too.

I agree with mp3rick 100%,I just started practicing and learning the skills of A DJ and I don't think that a newbie should be spending tons of cash buying the best equipment out there until he/she learn the trade.

And like many of you I also think that sound comes first.

Wow...talk about flashbacks hahaha!
Alot of times newer dj's use the flash of new gear or technology to compensate for their lack of experience. Those who have the basics down use it to enhance performance. However, both must be careful not to let the new light or vid system (or what have you) be the foundation of their performance. GOOD SOUND is paramount, along with music programming. The rest should be regarded as the icing on the proverbial cake. -e

That is the difference from a Pro...or Beginner.....
Yes WE ALL started on less then what we had now!! My first mixer was a radio shack realistic mixer and the one with no cross fader!! had a realistic stereo reciever and a set of SLBD1's and a set Sansui 15in Speakers which I still own today!!
My point is this generation of DJ's has no patience and want to buy the latest and greates equiptment with all the bells and whistle's and lasers lights.. and not take the time to devolop the skills and technical know how to put on a great show. I tell all the new DJ's to start off small....don't go for the big time to soon... practice and get your sound together 1st...... Learn how to hook up sound through a mixer counsel or to daisy chain or use a external crossover....Though amps now a days come with the crossover built in? I tell them learn about sound....Because people don't remember the flash lights and great music if you sound like crap!!!

Thank you for the info. I guess that's what it boils down to: you get what you pay for... The speakers you suggest are out of my financial range. I see you like JBL and HK Audio. Are those the best brands?
It is clear that we all agree upon one thing: sound is the primary concern for a deejay. Anything else is ADDED value.
Anyway, let me refrase my question: if you were to buy an active speaker system, and you would have, say, 3000 euros to spend, what would be the best choice as far as sound quality goes? In other words:
WHICH BUDGET ACTIVE SPEAKER SYSTEM GIVES A GOOD SOUND?
Or is there no such thing?

Numark is making some killer active speakers now, used in the VDJ booth at the show in AC.

DeeJay Corny....
Hijacking threads is not a nice thing to do. You would get much more specific help and guidance by starting your own thread or searching the forum as your question has been asked and answered countless times by countless people.
The E.V. LiveX powered series are really good speakers. I own the 15inch EV ELX 115P tops. The subs are not as good. I would stay away from the LiveX subs but I recommend their tops.

@ djcity
First off all, let me apologize if I did not follow a forum rule. I am not familiar with the term hijacking threads, but I can imagine what it means. Please allow me to respond to that: Once established that sound is more (the most) important (aspect) than lights and videoprojection, the next question that presents itself is: what would be a good sound system. I see this as a natural evolution of the discussion on hand. This is what makes a conversation alive, as opposed to sterile. BUT it is possible that I have not grasped the workings of forums yet. Maybe it is supposed to be singular topic, so that it can be searchable by topic. If so, I am sorry. Anyway, I will create new topics from now on for new questions that arise.
Then, let me say that the market is ever changing, evolving, and things are not the way they were some time ago. So the question in itself, about which budget speaker system would provide a reasonably good sound, is always valid, even if answered eslwhere a few months ago. Having said that, I must admit not having searched for the answer first, before posting. That was my mistake. I will do so as soon as I finish writing this.
Thank you for your advise on the EV speakers. I appreciate it.
@ Charlie Wilson
Thanks. I'll have a look at those!
@ anyone reading: please ignore my question about a good sound system. I will post that question elsewhere (after searching for existing threads).
