I've been trying to find the answers to the below questions on the site, but without success, so I'll try here.
First a bit of background. I worked as a professional DJ across Europe in the 80s, but have given up that profession since 1989. However, recently I was asked by a friend to play at his birthday in coming up in february, he wanted an "80's party" and I couldn't resist, so I said yes :-)
So I started searching for software, that would play all my ripped CDs and purchased music files, and found Virtual DJ Home - great software, that even gives me the oppotunity to subscribe to Grooveshark, so I have access to a lot of music.
Over the last month I have been familiarizing myself with the software, and I really like it. Of course I don't have the physical control that I used to have, but maybe I can regain a bit of that using the Ipad remote software. But what I lack in physical control I seem to have gained in other options like loops, effects, sampler etc. Great stuff :-)
However, I am going to do ONE gig, and I don't get paid, so obviously I want to keep my costs down.
I will purchase a Premium membership and I think I will purchase the Ipad remote software but then some questions pop up.
1. Will a premium membership give me access to downloading of effects, or do I have to purchase minimum the Broadcast edition?
2. I like the 4 deck skin of Virtual DJ, but what happens on the Ipad if I use that skin? Will it also be 4 decks, or two decks, or???
3. I might even buy the Broadcast edition, because a friend have a mixer I can borrow and it has "limited" microphone support. What does "Limited" mean?
Thanks in advance.
Lars

1. No, a premium membership will not give you access to effects. It gives you access to NetSearch/Grooveshark only. You will need purchased product such as VirtualDJ Broadcaster, Basic or the full Professional to download add-ons. Please see: http://www.virtualdj.com/wiki/Premium%20Membership%20Download%20Plugins.html
2. iRemote has its own skins. The default skin that comes with it supports 2 decks only. However, 4 decks are possible with custom skins, but you will need to purchase VirtualDJ to access these (See above.) Purchasing iRemote does not entitle you to skin downloads.
3. It works with the microphone built into your computer's sound card only. You will also need to use this same card for your master and headphone output. For more flexible sound configuration, you will need either VirtualDJ Basic or the full Professional.

Just be aware that if you do purchase VDJ (seems overkill for one gig!) then you're not permitted to sell it on.
VDJ is like a dog - it's for life, not just for xmas!
If I were in your shoes I'd be looking for some cheaper DJ software. It does exist...

But can I run VDJ with the 4 deck skin, and the Ipad with it's own skin at the same time, or do the skins have to be different?

My guess would be that if you had the 4 deck skin on VDJ, you'd only be able to access two of the decks from the iPad (unless the iPad had a 4 deck skin too).

My guess too :-) But that would be OK in most situations, I would only use the ipad to give me a sense of physical control instead of relying exclusively on keyboard and mouse.
Ahh well, it's only a few bucks if it don't work.
BTW, regarding not being able to resell the software, I know that. I have been working for "a large software company based in the Seattle area" for around 15 years ;-) I actually read the license agreements before I start using software :-)
I also realize that there are alternatives around, but none with a subscription that allows me to play songs from a library of 8 million songs. I need that library, because my original colletion was all vinyl. My current collection is not nearly large enough to play a full night of 80s.

Yes, you can use a 2 deck iRemote skin with a 4 deck skin in VirtualDJ itself.
The main skin determines how many decks are available.

While that is true, let's not forget that unlike many other DJ programs, VDJ will NOT (or hasn't yet) charge for updates. I purchased 5.0 a while back and now we're at 7.05 and haven't paid anything other than the iPhone app :)
So, something to consider.
Plus once a DJ always a DJ, you will find that old love spark and you're gonna be so good, other people will want you to DJ, so think ahead, not a bad side income (and fun too)
Also, I recommend the Hercules Rmx (if you do think of it, buy it first b4 you purchase VDJ since you get a great discount on VDJ, not the other way around)

Oh, you are so right! I already have a lot of fun mixing at home, and rediscovering all the tracks that I used to play (and making a long list of songs I have to buy again).
I am thinking about, how I can plan a gig every now and then - just for fun - specializing in the 80s, there might be a niche market for it here in Denmark, and I still have some friends, who are connected to the music business in different ways.

One more question.
If I buy, for example, the Broadcast edition is it then possible at a later stage to upgrade to Pro?

So, more questions seem to pop up.
I am now looking to purchase a controller, and so far I'm looking at Vestax Typhoon and Numark Mixtrack Pro. They seem pretty good value for money.
Any reccomendations regarding those two?
Also, the Mixtrack comes with Traktor software in Europe, is there a "competitive upgrade" option, if I want to upgrade to VDJ Pro?
The Typhoon comes with VDJ LE - what is the price of an upgrade to Pro?

Yes, this will give you a small discount ($20 off the full price of Pro) if you decide to upgrade at a later date.
VirtualDJ Basic gives you $99 off the full price of Pro.
If you are looking to purchase a controller, then we strongly recommend that you purchase one with VirtualDJ LE included. VirtualDJ LE will give you a discount off upgrading to the full Pro (The price varies depending on the product purchased - Typhoon LE is $100 discount off the full price of Pro.) Sorry, there is currently no competitive discount available for upgrading from a non-VirtualDJ product (I.e: Traktor.)
You should also consider other controllers such as the popular Hercules series - Hercules 4-Mx and the older RMX gives you $150 off the full price of Pro.
A selection of other popular controllers can be found on the hardware page: http://www.virtualdj.com/products/hardware.html

I registered my VDJ serial number and stuff back in the summer, but I can't remember the email address that it was attached to. How can I find out the email address? I know my login name, just not the email and password. Any suggestions?
