An ad-hoc connection is for when you DON'T have a wireless network point available (Or you don't have the login credentials to use it.) It allows you to create a direct wireless connection between two devices, e.g: Wireless card built into a laptop and an iPad.
If you have a wireless access point available then you should use that instead of ad-hoc by joining both your computer and iPad to it. It will automatically hand out an appropriate IP address in the same range to each device that connects to it.

I have now tried the adhoc network in a live situation three times. It is just not stable. The units have disconnected and I have had to restart the Ipad to get them to reconnect.
Time to try connectify!

Hi I am having issues with connecting my iremote to virtual dj on the laptop. My device is not appearing despite successful connection over wi-if and ad hoc.
