So im a college student and i have found that among my class mates, no one knows how to significantly dj parties. I have been for two years, just messing around, and just started doing it at keggers at my apartment. Apparently im decent, and people want me to do gigs for them at their places. problem is that i use a friends macbook, and my apartments stereo system. i have a macbook, but it had water damage, so i have been using my roomates instead.

its come to the point that i need speakers, obviously a computer with all my music loaded on it, not just my htc thunderbolt as a disk drive.

Im thinking about investing in some active JBL speakers, obviously a new laptop (if my macbook is fixed, im dousing it in 91 percent alcohol to see if the liquid damage is fixed, otherwise im selling it broken on ebay), and possibly a new midi controller

currently i have a numark omni, and i love it, but i want more. I was told about denon's mc-6000 which im insterested in (and could get for half price thanks to my girlfriends hook-ups), and obviously what i mentioned before.

A friend of mine told me the smartest thing to do with speakers is purchase two 12 in active JBL speakers, and nothing more. I'd be djing in peoples apartments/ houses where 30-50 people would be (yes, weve packed that many people in, it gets wayyyy too hot haha). So is this a wise decision? please let me know your thoughts. advice would be greatly appreciated!

If you are only going to do small parties, this may work out. What happens when they ask you to do a bigger gig? Even small apartment parties, these speakers need to be at ear level. On the floor, bodies and furniture will suck up the sound. Are you gonna use speaker stands, where will you put them? I say always buy more then you need, this way you will have it when you need it. I just had a thought, these will work great in an apartment. Got money?

save some money to buy software

If i didnt have the speakers on stands, they would most likely be on a table up high. And honestly, for the next couple of years, i highly doubt ill be needing anything else that will involve more people then an apartment

The JBL (I'm assuming the EONs) are nice but I would recommend the QSC K Series, basically they are the same prices as JBL EONs but pack more power. You would blow the roof off the dorms with a pair of QSC K8s, I think with just even 1 K8 at a small party you will have more than enough. Go demo them at your local guitar center, if you want more bottom end than the K8 can provide take a look at the bigger K10s and K12s you can also add a Ksub in the future should you need more bass.

Make sure you save money to buy the software or Chuck Norris might have to whip you =)
If you go with the Denon DN-MC6000 you should get a nice discount on the purchase of Virtual DJ Pro.

I just picked up (2) Alto ts115a speakers and stands from guitar center...I love them and use them for college parties and house parties... if i were u I would go down there and test the speakers in your price range so you can get a better understanding of the sound and quality of each speaker

Yeah when i get the denon i definitely will get the software, its just that living in an apartment and going to school full time, my job is only paying for so much. right now im relying on keggers to finance my equipment. i will definitely have it by then. and thanks so much! if you guys have any other suggestions, id greatly appreciate it

@ DJ Forged.. How do the the Altos sound ? I told someone yesterday to check them out at Guitar Center.

We had them at the VDJ booth in AC, and they did a great job. No, they are not as good as the KWs, but then again, they don't cost as much. They are as good as or better then others in the same price range. Check them out. I think they were aquired by Numark.

Thanks Rick.

What would be a decent speaker for a decent price? especially when ill be dealing with just an apartment full of people?

What's the most you can spend?

Honestly, right now i have no idea. if i had to save up, i would. right now im trying to sell a bunch of stuff such as a novation launchpad, ipod, ect ect and i have about 700 dollars saved, so maybe about up to 5-700
