That laptop looks awful, a good DJ wouldn't place that in between himself and the crowd, the idea is to break down the barrier.

Good job, you deserve success as your reward....

Joey....

Wow, looking pretty good!

Wonderful job... looks like many hours of work. Hope the party enjoyed and appreciated all your efforts.

I'm impressed, and that is not easy to do. Great ideas. Charlie, I disagree about the barrier comment. I want a barrier. I am also from the old school, and believe I should almost be invisible, and stay out the way. I am the captain of this ship, and I just lead the way with great music. The captain, the pilot, you never see them. Even the conductor has his back to you. I take my ovations at the end. Just my thoughts. Again, that is a great setup.

first of all, great setup. The lights are nothing short of amazing. DMX is awesome but it just takes so much time to set up; seem to be worth the time. If I had to do a set up like that, the client would have to pay me about $7000; it look like Hollywood.

I totally disagree with the laptop comment. I see nothing wrong with the setup. The only thing that stands out is that you are using Serato and not VDJ. I would expect this post on a serato forum but hey that is just me. Keep up the good work and wow those clients.

First off, thank you for the compliments.

As to the laptop "barricade," My only role in this event was the main room lighting. And that was limited to the setup and programming only. I didn't run the lights for the event or tear them down after. The guy who shot the video is the guy who did the actual event and he is a die hard Serato guy. I have been trying to convert him to no avail thus far...

It took me 8 hours to hang 2 10' pieces of electrical conduit from rails mounted to the ceiling. Then I hung 14 flat pars and 12 pinspots and aimed them. Then I placed 30 uplights around the room and ran power and DMX to everything. The lounge area from the beginning of the video was handled by the guy in the video. They were set to a static color.
The main room was all DMX'd. Programming the scenes for the main room was a piece of cake for me. I have been using Showxpress for several years. This setup was really easy, because all the lighting for the main room was split into groups:

2 groups of 6 lights each on the ceiling
3 groups of 10 lights each on the floor
2 3 watt leds for the headtable wash were on the same address
The pinspots were all on a single channel on a DMX dimmer.

Even if each fixture had a uniques address, Showxpress lets you group fixtures together making programming a snap. Showxpress also lets you layer scenes, so I can create fades and strobes seperate from the color. Choose a color then choose if it fades or strobes, etc. It only took a dozen buttons to create over a hundred different scenes.

Now my dream would be if Virtual DJ had a feature that would allow specific songs to send specific midi notes at specific cue points to Showxpress. In ShowXpress, I can set certain scenes to be triggered via midi input trigger. Then I could design a lightshow that is triggered automatically for certain songs.

The laptop being in the middle is preffered by many. Its better to be within reach while selecting songs and also having access to your cue points. If the laptop being in the middle was a problem, then all the cases with laptop shelves and self standing laptop stands wouldnt sell. The laptop on front of you is not blocking your view to see the crowd.

No it's not really blocking your view but it's blocking there's of you, hence creating a barrier.

Not wanting to diss you guy's, when I went digital and first started to use a laptop back in 99 I quickly picked up on how laptops made people think you were disengaged with them. A bit like if you were constantly on your phone texting, thats why I quickly off-set and lowered my lappy out of view.

Some DJ's might not of picked up on this I'm sure.

Understand where your coming from Charlie, I also made a deliberate decision to keep the height of my laptop down and have it sit so the audience can see me and more importantly I can see what is going on in the room without any field of view obstructions.

That is realy cool setup

Nice work, it looks good.

Looked very nice. Made me miss my days of lighting design.

On the laptop id agree with Charlie, I also dont like the barrier, I always place mine to the side. From a crowd perspective I also dont like having the person's face blocked by a laptop.

As for the comment on old school where the DJ is invisible, it has been widely proven that seeing the DJ gets people going more easily and quickly hence why all modern club booths adopt a more open and immersed design.

That is pretty freaking awesome. Looks like a permanent install.

Dude all I got is......amazing,hope the clients appriciated the time it took.

I like the look. Created a nice environment. I would be concerned about the mounting of the fixtures. Zip tie latches fail and edges of mounting brackets can cut them. You may want to look into proper clamping, and definitely get safety wire. Also, you say that you used 10' conduit. If it was EMT vs. rigid, it may not be able to support the load with that kind of span. Please understand, I am not trying to knock your work. But I would hate to hear that someone got hurt by falling equipment. Plus, I'm sure that you wouldn't like to be the cause.

awesome setup, i jizzed lol.

iv had my lappy to the left of me, right of me and in front of me... i prefere the lappy infront of me.

I did use 1 1/2" EMT conduit. It was suspended from existing fly points. All the fixtures hanging on the EMT pipe were hung with "O" style clamps. These LED puck style fixtures only weigh a couple pounds each. EMT pipe is MORE than sufficient for this particular job. The heavier moving head fixtures were positioned directly under the existing fly points. Was this a "proper" rigging job done by a licensed rigging company? Nope. However, I was willing to stake my reputation on the job that was done. Thanks for the feedback though.

I am the same way. I like a clean look. The guy that did this particular event I don't think really looks at things that closely. For MY setup, I keep my lappy off to the side and down. It lets me have a better view of the crowd.
