ROI - Return On Investment
ROI is a measure of cash generated by or lost due to the investment. It measures the cash flow or income stream from the investment to the investor, relative to the amount invested. Cash flow to the investor can be in the form of profit, interest, dividends, or capital gain/loss. Capital gain/loss occurs when the market value or resale value of the investment increases or decreases. Cash flow here does not include the return of invested capital.
Confused?

I have been inspired by the recent posts regarding the question:

"What speakers should I buy?"

It really isn't as easy as spouting off brand names or model numbers. There are several other questions that need to be answered first.

What is the budget?

Knowing how much there is to spend will give an idea which speakers are out of the price range. The other thing with the budget is knowing what the target revenue for the business is. In certain situations, it may make more sense to either rent or borrow gear until the budgeted amount for gear can be brought up to a higher level. Many times, cheap gear proves itself unreliable to the point where the amount of time and money spent to either fix or replace it ends up costing more than just saving that little bit extra to buy something that performs better and is more reliable.

What type of events? "What types of venues?"

This couldn't be more black and white. The bigger the crowd and the bigger the room, the bigger the system needs to be. Two entry level 12" powered speakers are not going to provide enough sound for a packed nightclub. In the same manner, a huge line array is overkill for a wedding with 250 guests in a hotel ballroom. Knowing the type of crowd and typical room size will give you the proper information to find PA gear with the proper specifications to fill the space with CLEAN, HIGH QUALITY sound.

All this ties into ROI. If I were to invest $3000 in a PA, I would want to make sure that I have a plan in place to make sure I make that amount of money back PLUS A PROFIT within the schedule laid out in the business plan.

I agree and we do often sound like broken records or copy machines by answering. While I totally agree with this topic and your posts, we also have to keep an open mind. Sometimes when people come here to ask what speakers do you recommend, They have a budget in many cases. This budget however is what they WANT to spend in many cases. When professional DJ's, Sound Engineers, and Sound Tech's open up and tell what we recommend this can change their minds sometimes.

This is the reason I always try to help out, because I would rather see someone make a good decision on Speakers, controller, laptop, lights, etc than for them to make a mistake. There are many times I wish I would have had someone to help me out and save a mistake.

What really gets me is the fact that the budgets wouldn't even buy a decent used pair of speakers, you would expect them to save more and keep an eye out on ebay but they don't they just go out and buy some unheard of nonsense, no value return speakers.

Well, I've sold loads of quality used gear through these forums and am proud to of helped those involved out. Wasn't for a profit in fact most time the gear I sold was at a loss.

One thing that I find really interesting is that a thread like this and others full of information from the veterans here are often skipped over by those who probably need to read it the most. I say more power to them. The ones I want to help are those who are SERIOUS about being successful. The rest can do their thing. This thread will fall to the "interior" pages and will only be seen by those willing to do a little digging for information. The others that only want an experienced person here to tell them the $hit speakers they found are a good choice will never learn...
