When professional dj's play at live venues and there's like 4 back to back artists, how do they all know they're not going to play the same tracks?

if by artist you mean djs this is how it goes...

3 days prior they meet and draw straws and set up an order in which each dj picks a song they really wanna play. once that song has been picked it can be challenged by the next guy and settled with rock-paper-scissors type of bout... and so forth and so on...

::: IM JOKING :::

what i do is just stick around and hear what the other guy played and pick different songs, watch the crowd and play according to their response... i never show up with a playlist, if your crowd is not feeling it you are in deep trouble if you cannot improvise...

usually the headlining dj has a "do not play" list that he gives to the other opening djs, sot hat the opening djs dont play those stuff.

+1 to raszah, building a set is only really necessary if your doing a specific grenre event. playlists can be selected prior to your session but you will find that they never get played in the order you chose.

End of carreer recipy:
-> Be backing artist for Tiesto and play the bootleg of his day before gig
-> Put your arms in a T formation when 'performing'
-> Ask for more money because the crowd seemed to have enjoyed 'your mix' better than Tiesto's who was just repeating what you did

yeah, or put your fingers in a V formation and wave them a tiesto.

It's a funny question but quite interesting at the same time. Not to bash on hip hop dj's, nor do I have anything against them, but.................

In many, many, multiple occasions, The first Dj's plays his set, and the second Dj's plays his set which is almost identical to the first Dj, the reason, well, all of them want to play the top 40 hits, and even though their songs are not in the same order, they all included at least six to ten songs that the previous Dj played, and these are Dj's that play one hour set, or an hour and a half sets, so, you will listen to the same song at least five times in one night.

In my case, I play house and trance 95% of the time, I prepare my set for a two hour set, but I always add up to an hour or more in my set. I do this for two reasons. First of all, if the Dj before me plays one or two of the songs that I have on my to play set, then having those extra songs will allow me to pick a different song and thus I will not play the same song twice in the same night.

The second reason, in case there are some delays with whoever comes after me, I can spin an extra hour or two, and have enough music to go on.

When you can work a crowd without playing the current hits of the day then you will be ready, Grasshopper.

I used to be the resident DJ at a club and one night they brought in a promoter who had his own DJ. The DJ had a bit of an attitude plus he played all the current hits during his set, and I should mention that he hadn't been DJing that long (3 or 4 years). So when it was my turn to spin I used my veteran expertise and spun a purely old school hip hop set (a set that a noob DJ wouldn't have the musical knowledge to pull off) and I brought down the house. I was a tough act to follow that night, and when the other DJ came back on to do another set and I went to the bar to get a drink everyone was telling me I should get back on the decks. FTW :)

I have done a few shows with 4 DJ's. We actually all have different styles, so while the same song might get played more than once, they were different remixes. And they were different enough that it didn't feel like a copycat.

I play clubs where sometimes there will be 3-4 of us in a 5hr set.

Sometimes songs do get played 2X. But for the most part we all use different remixes of the song. Also playing of a set playlist for the most part useless due to this. You just read the crowd and play. You need to know YOUR music and be able to mix songs on the fly.

Last new years eve I DJ'd at a club where me and another DJ switched off all night long. We had a set up each plugged into the house system. The booth was a bit crowded. I would play 5-10songs and he would tap me on the shoulder and say, "hey I got a banging set that will go into this" so I would let him mix into my song and vice versa. I don't do much hip hop so he took care of most of that. A lot of the electro house and top 40 fell into my hands. That was a fun night It was like having a mini battle, but in a collaborative way

2 weekends ago I play with 2 other DJ's. I think we ended up playing Shots and Party Rock by LMFAO 3X that night. By the time I got on, I ended up just using a piece from Shots and mixed in and out.
