Wedding season is come up for a lot of Dj''s.
Should a Dj's charge more for a wedding ? Why ?
Is it the unnecessary labor or music, and time not playing ? who knows but ask a dj should we go overboard with the price.

compared to what? It depends on the talent and amount of service you provide..
I know school DJ's that charge triple what I do..
I have also known bar DJ's that technically make more money then some mobile DJ's (when you calculate time involved and equipment required)
It all comes down to:
You should get paid what your worth or at least what the client thinks is a good value..
This is a talent based business, thus comparing your pricing to someone else is meaningless unless you have seen them perform..
Wedding DJ's usually get paid (on average) more then others because the reliability factor has to be higher..
IE: Frack up the wrong wedding with the worlds worst bridezilla, and she will make it her lifes goal to destroy your good name..
just saying. ;-)

I charge more, because it is much more work. I can only do one wedding a day. I have to be paid for the time I consult with you. My contract, and stamped return envelope is on linen paper. My interaction is greater. I look better than the groom. Sometimes, I also do the ceremony, which can be in a separate room. Each TV has a charge. Want a projector, that will cost you. If I have to go to the rehearsal dinner, I charge for that. If I have to go up more than 3 stairs, I charge for that. More than 100 people, that will cost you. Wedding are a la carte, you can have whatever you want, it will just cost you. The roses are the same, it's just that they cost more on Valentines day.

I forgot to add, that I am a video DJ, so everyone gets at least a 37 inch TV, even if they can't afford it. I tell the client, "I know you could not afford the video package, but I had the equipment with me from a previous gig. Don't worry, there won't be a charge for it, just let me know what you and your guest think". Bam, mo money, mo money, mo money. My tips are always bigger, and the other guest want it. It is the easiest promotion, and it takes all of 20 min to set up. Oh, and you can't charge everyone the same. Those with money have to subsidize those without money. In other words, if your reception is at The Tavern On The Green, you will pay much more than the reception at the American Legion Hall. They both will get the same service, one just gets a little more.

Hey Rick, I do the same thing. I always include a LCD/Plasma screen for video mixing, it always intrigues the guests, I get a larger tip and I hand out more biz cards for future business. It works!

This is the best thing I have ever heard! Love it! I feel the same way.

Yes I'll bring in extra equipment at times, especially if I have a mobile gig the night before. It doesn't take much to thow in a 42" TV on the tall tripod and hook it all up. Yep about 20 extra minutes setup and another 15 teardown. The extra work sometimes turns into more jobs.
Usually I use the TV and Uplighting for an "UP sell". It doesn't always work as customers lately are looking to trim their budgets. But I'll bring extra stuff along and set it up for no charge in order to exceed the customer's expectation.
Question to those who get tips: Do you put out a "tip jar" or something like it? I haven't gotten around to it yet, but I have a lock box I want to cut a nice slit in the top and make some kind of sign for it.
Most times I get paid by check, so tips are ignored. All the wedding books tell them to write the check in advance as to not have to pay overtime or tip. Darn bride guides.
Regards,
Jimmy

Never, never, never put out a tip jar. The balance has to be in cash. If you want to pay by check, it has to be two weeks in advance. I start on time, and end on time. It states on the contract what the overtime fee is. Fifteen minutes before end time, I approach the couple and ask is there anything else I can do, as time is running out. Overtime has to be OK'd by the venue also. I can usually tell who will tip and about how much. If it is a pool party or other home based party, I may play a little bit (10 min), before asking if they want overtime. If they were tippers before, I will go on a little more, and then ask.

I agree.. Never put a tip jar out for a private show. If you get any tips, it will be handed to you in hand sometimes in an appreciation card or like a drug deal.. they palm it to you like it's a secret.

We don't have a tip culture in the UK unfortunately, the people are just to hard up or greedy.

Same here in Oz, the only tips I get are: "Don't play any Pussycats dolls."
Occasionally someone might buy me a drink.. but I don't know of anyone here in Oz getting tipped.
As for weddings, I'm not mobile, so they hire everything (speakers/amps) and I just turn up with my equipment and plug in. Normally a flat rate, I get better money (per hour) playing clubs and pubs.
Maybe I'm just lazy, I like to turn up, plug in, hit the bar, play, get paid and walk down the street whistling.
The idea for me using VDj was to not have to haul crates and cases, and so far it's working out fine.

I charge more for weddings for several reasons (1) I HATE putting up with the bride and her mom, (2) All the equipment and business cost, (3) it is a one time event as opposed to a weekly club gig (4) all the equipment schlepping, set up and tear down (5) except the last hour when the crowd really gets into it they are BORING as hell, especially if you have to do the ceremony too, (6) it's usually the same stuff wedding after wedding for the most part and you can't be as creative as you can at a club, (7) I have to play WAYYYYYYYYYY to much music and/or genres I personnally don't like......in fact the only reason I do weddings is because of the extra money which can be as much a 10 times a club gig and at least 3 or 4 times more in most instances.
