whats the best way to get a set in clubs which already have residents?? i don't want to go "stepping on people's toes" but if everyone didn't do something because you want want to take over someones position we'd get nowhere in the world right??

anyway would the best way be to either a) record a short demo i.e 8-10mins long of what id mix an post/email it to the manager of the club or b) talk to the resident dj about a possible chance??

seems to be a fine line between right an wrong so any advice would be great!! :)

thanks in advance

Walk into the club with ten hot chicks all in skimpy miniskirts, go straight up to the club manager and demand to play the next week and say you will bring more girls next week, either that or get friendly with the promoter, invite em back to yours, get em smashed and have a mix up with them, no one gives a shit about mix cd's anymore as there is so many of them. Your only other option is what they have done and started their own night, get some mates together approach a club and get it for a function where you get the door takings, hire a system and some lights, add people and you have a party.

P.s. Managers look after the bar and the business, Promoters look after the party.

soo true

LOL
well. heres my two cents..
thing is, its been so long since I worked in clubs , my advice is probably completely useless (things have changed so much..)

lets assume you already have a great collection of music and some talent.. (back in the day, a great music collection was the #1 thing you needed.. today.. not so much)

How I 'broke in' is I went up to a few local resident DJ's and told them I wanted to be a DJ..
After awhile of being treated like an idiot I realized they get this all the time.. Even worse is to go to the manager and try to undercut them..

So I changed my tactics.. #1 and most important is I made it VERY CLEAR that I was not after their job.. I just wanted experience.. I actually promised them that even if it was offerred to me, I would NEVER replace them unless they allowed it themselves..
#2 is I made myself usefull and didnt frack with them.. If they showed up at the bar early so they could show me something or let me practice.. I showed up.. If they let my start off the night, I NEVER copied their sets nor played all the good stuff. If he needed me to cover for him one night, I made sure I was available..
#3 treat him with respect.. like the unpaid mentor he is.. You might not get a job at his bar.. but his 'reference' and good word might get you a job somewhere else..

Excellent advise Hippydog and gentlemanly.

The best thing to do is, have cds with you. People say i am a dj but the fact is, They want to know if your good and what you sound like. If your going to make a demo Cd, 8 thru 10 minutes is nothing. Make a full cd and hand them out to many promoters and club owners. While your making your demo, make sure it sounds good. If you made a mistake, do it all over again.. Your demo says alot about you. I wouldnt talk to the resident dj about dj iing at the club.

Why direct him elsewhere when he can get the answeres here.

the link seems to have a lot of info that will be useful to him, why not share it.
