Topic: How to start getting gigs?

由于该帖子已年深日久,可能包含陈旧过时或描述错误的信息。

I'm 17, and I mix at home for fun, used to do CD mixing until my mixer broke, and now I am looking into the mixtrack pro.

But anyway, how do I start getting gigs/ get my name out there? And How much should I charge /hr? like 10-15 bucks? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks! Andrew

i would recommend buying a cheap mixer, charging a fixed rate GREATER than 25 and hour, earning $$ to buy a mixtrack pro or anything of similar value.

first of all, ask around. you'd be surprised how many people need djs

2nd if you have to, do a couple of free gigs, so you can show your potential

3rd, BUSINESS CARDS!

these arent all the steps, but hey its a start

Source: personal experience... i started DJing at 14, and im now 18, its hard out there for what people label a "Kid", but hey, you shut them up after a while :)

Good Luck

Haha hell yeah man I hear ya... And i got the money to buy the mixtrack pro Ima buy it now- Should I invest in speakers? Or should most places have speakers there I can use?

Well, I would say get the mixtrack pro, great for starters & nice price point. Now onto the topic, Advertise,Advertise, Advertise..... I got lucky I have known this one dj since I was a kid before I ever thought about Dj'ing. (I started DJ'ing because I work around the music business and I figured I could dj to make a little extra cash.) So he has hooked me up with some gigs if he is booked for that day he gives them my number. Believe it or not though I make more money renting out my equipment speakers & mics than I actually do dj'ing. I get more calls about someone wanting 2 rent my equipment than I do for me 2 dj. Either way as long as I'm making money I'm happy. Now as far as pricing there are numerous factors here.

1. You need 2 find out what other dj's in your area are charging
2. Your ability

You don't want 2 be 2 cheap and undercut everyone in your area because they will hate u, It is good 2 be cool with the local dj's because some of them will recognize the drive and possibly help you out, plus u will have to work twice as hard to make what they would off of just 1 gig..(Ex. The dj who helped me charges between $150-$200 per gig..That is the average rate here in my area. I can make $150 just renting out my equipment so I look at it like 2 get me 2 dj they will have 2 pay me between $200-$250 depending on how long they want me....I did a party last weekend it was only a couple of hours and I made $150 just for 2 hours. So you need 2 do your research 2 find out about what other dj's charge in your market. Now another thing you need 2 do is to get an extensive music library because u will get a lot of requests for new & old songs. If you are planning on being a mobile dj you need 2 get your own PA system & wireless mics.

Yes invest in speakers, I found me a nice used set for $275 on craigslist when I did a price check on all of the exact same stuff I got it was around like $800, & I had 2 drive 2 hours away 2 get them but it was worth it cause I got the amp, 2 speakers & 2 mic stands. Look on ebay and get u some wireless mics. I got some cheap ones 2 start with but I love them, they sound great so I'm not going 2 upgrade.

Gather a bunch of guys, start organizing your own club nights and contact venue owners and ask them if they'd be interested hosting your event.

This approach is working very well for the young DJ's in my area.

I been doing this for years, because some club owners and promoters are real cheap ass holes who will jerk you for as much as they can screw you with no Vaseline. This way I get the 100% of the door and up to 15% of the bar.

Just be sure to promote your services for mobile gigs as well, such as weddings, sweet 16's, prom, etc. or you're basically throwing away money, because someone may say I really enjoyed the DJ at the club and want him/ her for my party, but you didn't have any business cards or gave the crowd a phone number and you're not at the same venue, so they can't find you.

Try talking to some local night clubs, or find some local roadshow guys and contact them to ask if you can tag along and learn a bit. I started by asking a DJ in a local nightclub and as soon as I said about learning to DJ he loved it so took me on board. I now am reguarly doing a student night in the same club thanks to this guy and he is tutoring me as I go giving me hints and tips.
