I own two businesses. My DJ/Karaoke/Video Mixing entertainment company and my building maintenance/repair/construction contracting business.
I agree with the people who say that VDJ should be rebranded & reskinned to change the perception some have of it which thus would loosen up the ridiculous restrictions some clubs and well known pros have imposed on VDJ. Actually even creating a whole new animal would be the solution. That way those who are perfectly happy with the current product can continue to use it and receive updates while Atomix can then offer a professional grade enhanced product with a totally different name such as Atomix Virtual Scratch or Atomix Scratch Pro Live or something else that would state the professional quality of the product, something that rings of both traditional and technological DJing...
Just my 2 centavos...

I say fix the core fundamentals and scratch all the other stuff out till those are completed, then start working on some of the real world funtions that people here have been requesting, some for years.
Then if all works well, there will be no need to reinvent the wheel, a solid product always sells well, the real success will come in the number of units sold and that by itself will command respect in the market place.....
Still you will have the Big Boyz spinin' their choice brand of software, ....bottom line... it will come down to functionality of features offered and how well they work in the real working world of a DJ period....
If I had that position, I would start there...

I like the idea of having a modular skin, where you could unlock the positions of everything and move them freely within the confines of the screen, then maybe if when in skinning mode if you right clicked the button/slider/textzone etc... you would get a drop down list of everything that could be assigned to the button/slider/textzone. this i feel would allow users ultimate software flexibility, and if you had a specific set of buttons that could be used, you would keep virtual dj's image. Also if that isn't possible at least make the virtual platters not rounded with the current shading (it makes the software look so cheap)
Also the other great feature is mapping, I think it would be good to make it so for basic commands you could use action learn to fill in things like shift buttons, and endless encoders by just leaving a couple of spaces blank that the user needs to fill in with action learn or typing script, and make it so if you type in the mapper when something is suggested down the bottom, you can copy and paste it in the box to save time and errors due to spelling.
I used deckadance once, It had the ability to automatically select the best settings for timecode's that would be a handy feature.
The above suggestions would increase the usability and decrease the setup time and confusion for new users, giving them more confidence in the software.
Beyond that for the company, I do like the idea of re-branding VDJ for the pro version, It has a stigma attached to it that is not going away no matter what other changes occur in the software. With the re-branding I would increase the quality of the plugins. then market the product with respected dj's like carl cox who you used to have, not b grade youtube ones like shortee that all the sub par oem companies use.
Stop piracy, not sure how to tackle this one but maybe make it so you need to connect to atomix over the internet to verify the software registration, or if you wanted to distribute in music shops make a usb key. That said everything that can be locked can be bypassed so there may not be a real solution to the problem.

The name is only a name , everybody knows Numark CUE is Vdj , for example . So , to change the name will be the same as now .
The Bad in the name is "Virtual" , but everybody knows the Good .
As Pro dj , I have Serato Live , Traktor Scratch 2 & Virtual Dj , and for me Vdj is the best so far , I have a big list "why" Atomix software is the number one .
It's the same with Mac vs Pc , we don't need a Mac for play some songs with a software , but some djs likes the Apple logo .
I mean : Mac is good , but Pc is good enought for any dj software .
Speaking with other djs , I'm feeling a different perception of vdj right now (better than 3 years before )
Vdj is a big Animal , they need to discover it , now is a good moment , because as Traktor user I can read a lot of problems with the new TS2 . For example : they have the s4 kontroller with clips & noizes (very bad drivers) . You can take a look in the Native instruments forum to find a lot of people asking : why ?
Problems with audio4/8dj drivers , even people buying new notebooks ! because they are having problems .

Personally I would let the DEV team to continue it's work undisturbed since I believe they're doing a very good job.
Then I would be searching for strategical partners, especially in the hardware field. I would forget about Numark (sorry guys just a personal taste) and I would go for DENON...
Afterwards I would have to decide which way the software should go... I mean I would have to set milestones for the next major version and that ain't easy... For this purpose in colaboration with the DESIGN team I would take out every single element out of the "Wishes Forum" and I would examine if it would be nice to do/have... Several wishes there are already possible to be done via work-arounds but I would consider if it would be able to provide a direct solution to each one of them.
Finally I would hire a couple of guys to redo the default GUI for all possible resolutions in native graphics, and I would "force" the dev team to make an algorithm that would automatically load the proper skin the first time a user uses the software... :P
I have a lot more thoughts, but that's for what I would do if in charge of the DESIGN team or the DEV team.
What I wouldn't do:
I wouldn't change the name of the software. NEVER!!! Perhaps I would consider a logo change, but NOT a name change. All the major brands I can think of right now have done some logo changes sometime on their company history, but none of them changed it's name!!!
I wouldn't release a proprietary version of the software (aka a version that's binded in a controller or other type of equipment)
I wouldn't answer the phone if I saw that the number calling was from France (just in case :P)

Re branding is a quick fix, and is something I don't agree with, the problem with the software is that it free or as good as by way of downloading it illegally, that’s always been the problem.
Most DJ's don't want the guests to have the very same software as them, let alone the same version or worse newer lol.
There are two many versions of the same product nowadays, Traktor, Serato etc and that put's me off buying them.

Well, if I ran Atomix for a day...
I would steal a few of the ideas from this thread that I like, and that's exactly what I'm going to do now! :D
I think a few people on this thread have got a bit lost and started thinking just about the software rather than the company as a whole.
The aim of the company is to make a much money as possible, so whatever you do has to be geared towards making more money! Improving the software is just one part of that... (Obviously it's a very important part! :D )
Here's my list...
- Create a new "improving the end user experience" focus group. They would look at all aspects to see how things could be improved; from installation, learning to use the vdj (other software has interactive tutorials on the first run you know!), the user interface, installing and setting up hardware, included effects & plugins, and of course actually performing with vdj (maybe standardising the effects interface... I have an idea!).
- Step up marketing to appeal to certain market sectors (which doesn't have to involve spending that much money!). I think it's fair to say a lot of mobile DJs already know about vdj, but not all. Perhaps look at ways to reach all those mobile guys that haven't thought to search on the internet for DJ software. Mainly though I'd want to increase vdj's appeal to all those wannabe Pete Tong's and wannabe DMC champions. Viral internet videos featuring some big names, or medium sized names at least :D getting busy to show what vdj is really capable of. I've not seen a single video of anybody using 4 decks on vdj to good effects or recording/looping line in sources yet. This was the closest thing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VhKNaGu5m4Y but that's only one video, we need them doing it on vdj, and explaining how they've got it all set up. To be fair there's a few by DJ Larry D which are cool, but that's like 1 per year if that. And they don't use all the new features of the latest version of the software. This is more what i'm thinking of http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DxgKCmGVnG0 and then another video showing what's done http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k-rSwlTiLWY
- Develop more revenue streams.
---Netsearch subscription is a great service, and for $10 per month it's a steal! The addition of a separate music video netsearch using some kind of official channel in addition to youtube, etc might be pretty popular. I'm sure people would pay more for that kind of service. And if there's no content partner available, let's set one up! (That's what ebay did when they realised they needed a global payment system.. They invented paypal!)
---Seriously look at a subscription model for vdj pro in addition to download purchase. I don't think it would be a major income stream, but think of all those no licence users that can't try out a feature properly in the free home version due to the time limit. We can just say: pay $15 and try the full version for a month or two! Then once they're confident with the software after a month or two they'll probably buy it anyway. And you could offer discounts for people who have previously rented the software, or even something like if you rent it for 24 months then you now own the full version. There's loads of possibilities.
---Seriously think about an "app store" model for the plugins download section. All the free plugins that have been released so far remain free, but any new plugins made can be monetised by the developer, if they want to do that. Just like the apple app store the developer decides on the price (or they can give it away for free if they like) and then vdj gets a percentage of all sales. Apparently apple gets 30% - imagine if atomix got even just 10% or 20% of all the firetext and flash visuals sales! :D And an app store could improve user experience rather than buying from external websites (first job for the new focus group!).
I think they'd be other benefits too if people bought plugins too, like appreciating them a bit more. Anyone who's ever DJ'ed for free will know that rather sometimes people are really grateful, but other times people just mess you around because your time doesn't have any value... You haven't charged for it after all! Anyway, I've gone off on a tangent...
That's probably the longest post I've ever made... But that's my 2 cents, perhaps the viral videos are a bit extravagant, but the rest of it is good stuff IMO!

This is going to be my last post on this topic about NLU's because the staff are probably sick of it by now seen as most of the request have been about that.
I just wanted to say that VDJ is a great product and I think it's a strong and as popular as ever however if people don't buy it because they can have it for free then where is it going? Imagine Toyota giving cars away for free, wouldn't last long.
This is the biggest thing that needs to be addressed, I know someone that has a crack copy and he's well off, he won't buy a genuine version because he's cheap. That and the fact he has stated he'd rather spend it on beer!
PS,
He's on version 7

I think a lot of users will feel a lot more directly connected now with upper management then leaving a post in the "wishes" forum, although we know that particular forum is avidly watched by the team. I know a couple of my wishes came into being.
Great new addition.

That sounds like a crazy idea for two reasons
1. you are going to get a lot of repeats in what people request
2. You're going to get noobs asking silly questions
I think you should make a wishes section that pro users can vote for so you can judge the popularity of a request. The requests should be moderated so there is no repeats and kept brief.
