In order to be successful, do you have to own alot of high tech gear? Just a simple question ive been thinking about lately. When i say high tech gear I mean turntables, etc. Someone asked me this question last week and i told them not neccesarly. Was I Right?

Well it all depends on what type of success you are talking about... If you DJ parties/weddings/clubs I would say success would revolve around your music choice and your ability to entertain the crowd. You don't need all of the newest/hottest gear to accomplish that. That's my opinion though.

you're only successful if you are good enough....all the money in the world to buy the best gear wont make you any better than you are.
if i bought the most expensive pair of football boots, it wouldnt make me a better player, likewise dj equipment.

Both your posts are basically asking the same thing so.....

Imma keep it simple for you.

Love what you do and you will never work a day in your life.

Most of us if not all of us (Professional Dj's) truly LOVE what we do. If you have a passion for it then you will be successful. It takes time, patience and PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE!!!!

Love what you do.
Practice.
Learn your music.
Practice.
RESPECT your craft, yourself and others.
Practice.
Learn the basics.
Practice.
Develop your own style.
Practice.
Practice.
Practice.

First figure out if this is really what you want to do because it gets REALLY EXPENSIVE REALLY FAST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Until you know if DJ'ing is really for you, don't get a whole lot of equipment that you will never use. Get the basic gear to practice on. Figure out what kind of DJ you wanna be then get equipment to support that.
(Example)...
Hip Hop DJ ----------- Turntables (Direct Drive), Tabletop CD players (CDJ's) or Controller (Numark NS7 or Numark NS6 or Vestax VCI300)
House Music Techno Trance DJ ----- Controller (Hercules RMX)

You're right! You don't need high tech gear to be successful! To be honest, most high end gear is overrated. You can honestly find decent equipment within a modest budget to get you over, until you're ready to purchase the equipment you desire and it doesn't have to be some crazy break the bank prices. Besides, nobody goes to a party or event to hear a DJ play, because he/she has the best turntables on the market!

I can tell you want to have a successful career as a DJ, for you already have one thing working in your favor which is the love for the game! I been in this industry 26 years & counting and the reason being my love for being a DJ. If you want to be a continued success, then you must practice, practice, practice. As the old saying goes, you must learn how to crawl before you can walk and learn how to walk before you learn how to run. Understand you won't learn this business overnight, because this is a learn as you go business and there is so much to learn. so continue to soak up as much knowledge as you can, just remember to always play from the heart and don't just learn how to entertain your crowds with your skills, but learn how to engage them as well.

I'll let everyone else have the great stuff such as the mixing, business aspect, etc. lol!

In order to be successful... you will need to develop your skills from the worst of equipment to the best. The reason I say this is that you may be forced to take over for someone at the last minute on unfamiliar equipment, or be forced to use an older device as a back-up when your equipment suffers a glitch or fails. Technology isn't perfect yet.

Further more, you will also have to enjoy:
- hauling equipment, setting it up and tearing it down.
- playing different genres of music that you may not enjoy
- dealing with drunk people
- getting pulled over by the cops in the early hours of the morning
- driving in the dark in adverse weather conditions
- giving up the majority of your weekends
- dealing with challenging situations
- spending countless hours of getting new music and organizing your database
...to name a few.

Once you get a grasp on all these things, can handle them and can learn to embrace them... you will find success.

Equipment is much like a movie, you may like one that I didn't enjoy or vice versa. Your gear will always be a preference thing and there isn't a single piece of equipment that will make anybody successful that hasn't taken the time to learn how to use it and master it.

Good luck to you sir,

I started with a laptop, hercules rmx, vdj and a pair of Behringer speakers. I was pretty successful the first year. Saved up and bought QSC speakers (since sound quality will help you look better)

Being a successful DJ is 80% being a good salesman. Sell yourself, know how and where to promote yourself. 20% Music selection and crowd control. This last one will give you call backs.

Pioneer is the most over rated gear, the onlt Pioneer gear i have is a pair of headphones and they snapped in half three months down the line.

Who mentioned anything about Pioneer? Did I miss something?

Well as a counterpoint, if you are trying to mix some vinyl on a pair of belt drive numarks versus some 1200's you are going to notice the difference and it is worth getting the better gear.

I have used countless CDJ's and I have found nothing better than Pioneer, so I will always pay more for those....

However mostly, everyone elses point is correct, it is not the gear, it is how you use it but sometimes having crappy gear sets you back!!

You Can Have The Best Of Best Gear,But Your Music Is What Makes The Crowd Party, I Seen Dj Just A Laptop And Come In The Club And Hook Up Just The Head Phone Plug And Rock It Like That Had A Mixer And A Controller He Had All His Cue Set And A Play List. You Buy The Best It May Last Longer And Less Accessories You Need.Do Whats Good For You. But Keep The Crowd Partying,And Get Paid For What You Enjoy Doing.

I'm sorry but that last post was very difficult to read.

i think you should have gear that is good enough that even civilians can tell

that you are professional and serious .... your gear should dovetail well with

what you do with it ....gear that is inadequate to your needs or compromised

in anyway , will hold you back (like cracked software)

if you have really great , expensive gear but cannot really use all of it's capabilities

then you look foolish for spending so much and pretentious .....
