I'm looking into some decent speakers right now. My price range is $400-$500 altogether. The only problem is, I don't know JACK about speakers. Do i NEED to get an amp? I guess my only real question like i said before is do I NEED to have an amp?

You need an amp unless the speakers are powered.
For small gigs powered speakers are better, a bit more expensive but you save on not having to buy or carry an amp around.

I wouldn't necessarily go by guitar centers website for pricing. very often the prices in the store are lower than on the site. They had a huge sale this weekend for presidents day and some speakers were up to 20% off in-store.
I would look for powered speakers. Much easier to haul and set up. also you can just use 1 for small venues or speaking events.
I would also check out your local craigslist, people are always upgrading and selling off their entry level gear. you can often get gear in good shape for close to 50% off list.

If it wasn't for your guys' help i would have bought the speakers i posted in my original post without knowing i needed an amp.
And yea, i was only using the website just to window shop (if that's even possible online?). I've never ordered ANYTHING off the internet. I always go in store and take a look around just because of what you mentioned, the prices might be lower in store than online.

If your going to buy affordable powered speakers. Go with the behringers. The peaveys have very little low end because of the cheap cabinet.

Whats good Jbart. I hear what cha saying. Craigslist is official. I get most of my stuff from there also. You can find soo many great to crazy deals.
279 each at GC is pretty good. If i was looking for a affordable good pair of powered tops, i would buy these.
