Hello everyone! i am gonna buy my first ever dj equipment and i have done extensive research and came to the conclusion that time coded vinyls would be amazing to spin, but the advantages of having a cd player turntable could be more beneficial. i am stumped in my decision process! if i was to get a time coded set up i would get either the numark ttx1's or stanton t.92's with a hercules rmx. and vdj to run it all of course (unless serato is better??). If i was to get the cdjs id prolly go for the denon dn s1200, numark ndx 800 or try to find some used cdj 400. so any help would be greatly appreciated on anything of the above. is time coded better than cdjs?? or is cd players really the future?? thanks in advance to all!

This is a personal choice, so someone else's personal choice may not be good for you. You are going to get so many different personal opinions, how is that gonna help you? You need to first decide which format is gonna be better for you. The only way to decide that is to try all options out. Do you like the way time coded vinyls feel, how they control the software, the size, the weight, how will you transport them, the cost, ease of use, etc? The same questions need to be asked about time coded CDs. What about controllers? There are so many controllers on the market, with so many options, it is mind boggling. I happen to like controllers, but what does that mean to you? You said you did some research, did that include using any or all of these options? You need to touch and play with this equipment to make a educated decision. Once you decide on the format you are going to use, then you can decide which brand or model will suit you better.

You also need to think about the future. Will vinyl still be available? or even CDs for that matter?
MP3 mixing software is the future, and alot of music distributors have gone strictly digital. Just some food for thought.

If i were you, I would check out stores Like Guitar Center, sam ash etc. Mess around with the decks and see what they feel like. Feel & performance is what separates each deck or controller from another. A Turntable & A CDJ are similiar because they both use Time codes.

+1 to Caliente as well those are wise words.
I suppose I can add my two cents as well. I own turntables and CD decks. Nothing will ever replace the feel of spinning on 12" vinyl. If you crave features (midi control, fx,data displays) then CD decks take the cake. I'm fortunate enough to own a pair of Denon 3700's. They are by far the best decks I have ever owned. They scratch similar to a TT providing vinyl emulation, and also have loads of built in features. So if you want something thats right smack dab in the middle of both, I would say look into these decks. I own a cdj400 and while its a good piece of kit, for the money I would much rather have a Denon deck.

I'm going to throw a wild card here: forget TCV, go with (just) a controller instead.
You're saying it's your first DJ-setup, so I'm guessing you have no prior experience spinning vinyl nor you don't have an excisting vinyl collection already, am I right? TCV is primarly for people who fit to those categories, so unless you're heavily into scratching I don't see much reason to start DJ'ing with TCV these days.
With the money you'd spend on turntables you can get a professional-grade controller which is more suitable for the non-linear way of mixing that digital DJ'ing at it's best can offer. TCV is more like a compromise solution between the old and new way of DJ'ing, but still rooted in the old linear way of mixing.

one of my friends has both TT's (gemini xl 500 i think?) and NS7. i learned to beatmatch with both, and i love the feel of vinyl! but truth be told i fell in love with all the effects and control over the mix with a CD deck (i kno the NS7 doesnt have cd capabilities, but im guessing its almost the same as a cd deck, right?). i was learning to scratch when he moved to college, so my training ended there =[
@caliente & daz- i agree with you i think im gonna check it out this weekend because i cant afford the ns7 and i really havent experienced but the very tip of the iceberg with dj equipment.
@lcmxr6- i kno, when i was researching, my jaw dropped when i saw what those could do.. unfortunately i cant afford them yet, and idk if its smart to dish out so much money on first dj set up.. what u think??
@auralcandy- i love the way scratchin sounds and i would love to learn to do all those awesome styles, but im more into house, dance, electronica, etc.. so i dont think much scratchin is involved... at least not that ive heard much of it. but i agree, i have never played on TCV, so i think ill go for cd decks
also, 95% of my music is on my laptop, so midi capable cd decks would be more beneficial i think
thanks to all of you!!!!
so what cd decks and mixer u guys think would be best?? i want to be able to perform at parties and school dances and the such in the near future. im aiming to spend under $1k for both decks and mixer

I have two technics 1200 and I also have the Denon 3700's. The 3700's are official because they have a nice spinning platter and i never have to buy needles. You can get a NS7 for 900 bucks on Craigslist. I got one for 850 and i seen many for 900 and higher.

If you do go the Turntable route, if you want to go with something brand new, I'd go with the Numark TTXusb. However you said you enjoyed the NS7, so you might want to also take a look at the V7, you can control 2 decks with just one V7. Then you can use it play around with it, and later on buy a second V7 and you'll be good to go!

well i really love the feel of vinyl, the only reason i want the cd decks is for te ease of cueing hot cues and most of all fx and loops. im wondering if i could do all that with somethin like a vestax or hercules controller, or this neat little things i found called Novation Dicer. They can be programmed to do looping and fx and te such, plus they fit right in the corner of the TT.
also do you guys think it would work with just the time coded vinyls and soundcard like a maya 44 then run it all wit VDJ? and what mixer would be good for the TT's? thnx!

The Ns7 has smaller wheels but the scratching is really good like turntables. You have 5 cue points. You dont need to buy a dicer if you get the Ns7. You wont get a comfortable feel and scratch from a vestax or Hercules Rmx. Turntables are good if you want to get into advance scratching and really like the feel of vinyl. If you like scratching but dont want to get crazy with it, You can use the Ns7, Denon 3700's, Cdj 800, 1000, CDj 850, 900 and the CDj 2000's
