I love my setup right now, no problems, but I obviously need a system for the music to be heard. What is a good combination of speakers/subs/and amps that will cost me the cheapest amount of money for the quality. There are so many brands out there, I have no idea what to get.
Thanks in advance,
Mack

Hey, I have a few questions that might make it easier to answer yours...
What setup do you currently have?
What is your price range?
What sort of events do you currently/plan to do, i.e numbers amd sizes?

Yea makes sense. I was in a bit of a rush posting this earlier. I currently have a Denon MC6000 with a MacBook pro. I'm looking to spend no more than 500 dollars on everything. As for party sizes, I'd say up to 100-150 people.

This is just me talking, but going inexpensive on sound system is not recommended. What do you have to offer? Sound!! That is what a DJ is if you boil it down. You provide music which is sound.
$500 is just for a decent amp. Plan on spending another $1000 for a decent main cabinet and subs. As much as people knock Behringer, they do make some awesome speakers. I would take a look at them. You may be able to get away with some of the Gemini speakers for small venues for now. That is about as inexpensive I would go.
If you are really on a budget. Look at craigslist, you can find some real bargains there on some decent stuff. When I started back in the day we did not have craigslist, but we had the pennysaver(a weekly paper publication) I bought my first Peavey speakers there for half the price. I used it for nearly 3yrs before I had enough money to upgrade. When I got out of the mobile DJ biz and transitioned to club DJ, I sold my stuff through the same publication. A couple of years ago when I started my mobile DJ again, I got some pretty cool lights through craigslist at a very low price from a DJ going out of biz.

Yes I realize that 500 is really cheap for this audio equipment but it obviously isnt recommended to go cheap on anything. Im only trying to get speakers that will get me by until I can afford to upgrade to better gear. As much as sound quality matters, for the money i have to put into this, I really just need something loud enough to be heard with enough bass to get people dancing.

Hi mate
My suggestion here would be to look at a pair of good second hand powered speakers with stands. Just take the time to check them out before handing over the hard earned. pay special attention to the treble units on 2way speakers as these are usualy the first items to fail if the speakers have been abused.
JBL,Mackie,QSC and many many more makes are out there. Just make shure you can try before you buy. If its all the money you have then buy localy and avoid EBay or online sales.
Good luck

Also keep in mind that your sound quality will also get you re-hired and possible other clients. Professional quality speakers will speak volumes (no pun intended) about your commitment to what you do.
For parties up to 200, I'm going to recommend the Mackie Thump Th-15 series on stands.

I agree with all the advice given so far - especially about second hand/user gear. Be careful what you buy and from where but there is a huge drop in the resale of kit from new. I have never bought any new speakers or amps - always give it a good test and most importantly take your own mic and see how you sound through it. Dosn't matter if you don't speak much when working but it gives a much better feel as to the sound and warmth of the speakers (assuming you have a decent mic comparable with the standard shure SM58 not the plastic rubbish that some so called dj's think is a mic). Also when testing a speaker system listen to the top end as listed above and also for the bass at full volume and that there is no distortion as this may mean the speaker is shot. Also when doing a listening test any speaker will sound lound in you lounge, garage or a showroom. Playing to a room full of people is a very different job. My suggestion is try them outdoor in the garden and try to stand about 20 meters away to see how they sound (if you have the room). If you know the person selling them make the effort to go and see them when they are using them or if they will let you take them out for a trial.
I've been DJing mobile for about 20 years so would also suggest a pair of 15inch speakers with horns around 300Watts rms each then mounted on stands. This gives a good sound throw accross a room and enough bass for a room of up to 200 people. (Unless you a drum and bass specialist then you will need double this). Weather you have powered speakers (amp built into the speaker) or separate amp and speakers is a personal choice. When planning your system always plan what happens if something breaks down. If each speaker has a built in amp and one fails you can at least finish the gig without having to stop playing. If the speakers are unpowered and the amp fails what happens? spare amp? If a speaker fails you just unplug it and finish the gig on one speaker. Personally I have always had separte amps because when I started they were always separate so have conntinued that way but I have used a number of friends systems with powered speakers and they sound great. That would be my prefered choice if I was starting again, but this will depend on what you can find second hand within your budget.
In the future if you want to increase the power of your system you can simply add some addition lower-mid-range/bass bins (400-500 watts each) and an active crossover and still retain your exisiting speakers for your mid/top and this will give you a system for up to about 400 people with minimum additional expendature. This means that you then have the choice of 2 sizes of sound system depending on the venue size and audience you are playing to with minimum investment so giving the best financial returns.
Again as suggested I would stick with a known brand (or even old brands) as you can be confident in their performance.
Hope this helps.

Thanks derek and everyone else for the help. Im still on the search for the best possible deal. Powered speakers definitely sound like the best option for me at this point, I just feel that in the tight areas Im going to be working in, with people dancing close to my setup, the less equipment the better. Any other advice on specific brands, models, etc that you know are usually found cheap?

Hello to all, for the price, this is a good deal, sounds very good, I have a pair and for 200 people is just enough in my opinion. Not the best but is a good start.

For mobil operations no one can convince me that going with a amp is the better route.
Self powered speakers are gonna save you a whole lot of time setting up and breaking down.
If you don't have the money to buy great speakers, then look for a place that will rent you speakers. Better to pay for rented speakers until you save enough money to buy good ones.
QSC - K12's, only need two, for up to about 200 (depending on venue) Rent a subwoofer (not always necesary unless you're trying to impress a younger crowd)
QSC has better sound the Mackie.

Keep your eyes open for a pair of used RCF ART 312A powered cabs...
They were until recently around $700 each new, but they dropped (because of new ranges coming out) to $495-$499.
So a used pair ought to be just about in your price range - if you're lucky.
As others have said, don't skimp on the sound. False economy.
