Topic: Considering NS7 / NSFX ....

由于该帖子已年深日久,可能包含陈旧过时或描述错误的信息。

Long time no post....

K, so heres the deal.

My current setup i'm more than happy with, i like to travel light and my current mobile / bar rig is my laptop, and a numark x6 mixer, using a mouse. (no controllers)

Recently, i've been djing alot, and everytime I see pictures of me djing, it just looks so..... plain.

I enjoy scratching, but I have a bad back; and to travel with 3 items (2 turntables and a mixer as well as timecodes) vs just one piece that I can lie on a table and plug-in and go is VERY tempting.

I'm wondering if some users of the ns7 / nsfx wouldn't mind posting a few reviews of how the mapping with VDJ has worked for them, and how it has effected your overall dj experience. I'm looking forward to seeing some responses, hence the recent 2 days of googling etc and really hearing the same story from random reviewers (mostly in another language besides english), and getting the real deal reviews from people on the VDJ forums.

Thanks in advance

PS I'm confused about the nsfx, is the FX bar just another midi controller that controls the built in effects in the program that I would THEN map, or is it analog, and has its own effects processor that is added after the audio out from the NS7's soundcard?

thanks again..

I use the ns7 and the fx the fx unit is just another midi controller that eats another usb. I'll tell you the ns7 fx and case are very heavy compared to what you are using now. Also you need a really good pc to run it. I really like mine but i use it on Mac not pc, your milage may vary.

So what do you have the FX controlling in vdj? And since you have the ns7fx, do you see yourself using the FX portion at all?

Yes, about the weight, I'm sure it's heavy than what I'm using now, since all I carry now is a backpack, and my mixer in a bag. Since I'm very into video, do you think the FX would be of much use? Currently the only control I use for video is my left and right arrows, which switch the lead from left video and right video. Other than that, I have no real need for video control. I see the xfader is midi mappable, so I'd already have that automated, and any special things such as clip bank, I could just use the mouse for...

What do you think about the jog wheel being used to select and loading tracks? Do you find that it's a useful tool, or more of an annoyance??

Ahh, also forgot to add, my laptop is a Dell vostro 1520 with a core2duo 2.4 ghz and 2 gig of 800 mhz ram. The video card is a dedicated 9300m 256 mb..

I'm guessing that it can handle the work load, since I've been reading on that the ns7 does infact require a decent amount of cpu horse power...

If you want to travel light forget the NS7... I just loaded mine into my truck 20 minutes ago and the thing is a friggin pain in the ass. I've got it in a Odyssey glide case that is awesome, but if you have a bad back, this thing will surely make your life miserable.
As far as the FX, I use it to control the sample drops and sound fx, but it does allot more than that. It can also control the video stuff, but I don't even mess with that.
Why not consider the Denon MC6000 thats due to be released this month! It looks much more portable than the NS7, has more features and is $300 less.... which means you can get the Odyssey case with it, and still be less than the NS7.
Just be sure your laptop exceeds the min requirements to power either of these devices, unless your'e in the market for a new one.
Good luck!

Hmmm... I'm surprised that you say it's really THAT heavy... I'd figure it would be a little heavier than a 1200 in an odyssey case.. Thanks for suggesting the Denon MC6000, I didn't even know about that unit! But what appeals to mr so much about the ns7 is the combination of midi controller with a mixer, PLUS a moving platter for scratch time. I guess I'll have to just go check one out for myself and see how I like it in person..

Other than that, how is your experience with the ns7 along with vdj? How do you find the turntable reaction time? Would you say it's spot on, slightly off, or too much lag to do any accurate scratching? Also, what type of laptop/desktop are you running with to power your rig? (I just read that the ns7 requires 4 gig of ram???)

I dont scratch, but it seems to me that the platter control is right for it. With VDJ 7 the NS7's better than ever, only leaving out one function, the speed control for the platters. Other than that, its a great device and well matched with VDJ.
As far as laptop, I know the Mac Book Pro easily powers it, however I did notice some video lag with the Mac and of course, Mac does not recognize WAV files. ( this was a big problem for me, I've got a ton of them ) AND the Macs only have TWO usb ports and DONT offer HDMI, you have to VGA adapt to do video.
I've since switched from Mac back to PC with a ASUS G73 and it kicks ass.
I'm waiting to see the new Denon in person, and want to hear how the community rates it.... so keep your eye out for the release!

I love the NS7 and I too have a bad back. It is about 80 lbs with case, so... Yea, seperate cases may be better. It may hevier over all, but at least it is broken up.

But, clients love the NS7. I have had it called all kinds of things including "sexy". So, there is deffinatly a wow factor with the platnum vinyl and custom logos. You will need a quck PC to run it though.

My review, I will carry this thing for as long as I can, I really do like it. Looking back if I knew then what I know now. Until VDJ 7, I may have gone with V7s and a Rane 68, possibly or seperate CD players to break up the size. Not sure now as I am kind of attached. It is hard to imagine anything else as it works like a part of me with all the advantages of VDJ.

Hope this helps.

Back breaker indeed. Worth every penny though. I sold my trusty turntables for this hardware. It's THAT good.

I just wish I could find more info on specifications, such as.... What does the mapper have the reverse switch do? is that something thats just not really used? can you map it to do whatever? What about those of you who use a sync button, which button there is mapped to that with the mapper?

(Not that i'm afraid at ALL about making my own custom maps for midi devices, far from it. I'm just wondering what the suggested map is for all the buttons on there that aren't obvious [cue is cue, play is play, etc])

I also just had a long talk with a friend of mine who says that he LOVED his ns7, But, nothing compares to the validity, and feel of rocking out with 12s (which I can totally understand, and do myself) But then he continues to tell me....

"Well I can certainly understand that a much older DJ like yourself would want to go with a 1 piece device like the ns7, and can totally respect that you don't want to lug around 1200s anymore....."

i'm 29 :-/

Still, after this conversation, i'm still looking forward to hooking up an ns7 to my laptop, just to see how it works, and then trying to pack it up and then see how much it weighs in my own hands. My buddy who pointed out that i'm an old dj said that he thought it weight a little more than a technics 1200 in a case, and carried it with one hand.

We'll see, as some people around me are selling theirs on craigslist, so its a good opportunity for me to check one out first hand.
