Topic: Timecode Debut tomorrow night - any good advice?

由于该帖子已年深日久,可能包含陈旧过时或描述错误的信息。

Hi,

tomorrow night I will do my first gig with the timecode solution I bought. My status currently is:

Everything checked to work correctly at home. Everything refers to VDJ in general, and the timecode setup as well.
I know a fitting mixer & TTs are present at the venue.
Fallback controller is my old DJ Console.
Fallback music is my record case I will be bringing anyway, as I want to play some older stuff as well. In case of emergency this will suffice to play the whole night

Given the above facts - is there anything else the experienced users think I should consider?

Stay away from speakers bass vibration. VDJ 6 and 7 are much much better handling this now a days, but still needs some. Play with the silent adjustment if you are going to be expose to lots of vibration ahh yeah clean the needles pretty often .

Besides that, everything should run smooth.

Cool, thanks for the hint.

Anybody else, anything ? ;-)

Spare needles and timecode vinyl?

You dont need extra timecode vinyls, because you can turn the vynil side to play from time to time if you want to. One vinyl could break, but you can change the software inputs to use only one timecode and control two decks. But an extra needle, yes, it is a great tip.

I have a problem with dust, it gets accumulate in the needle and it makes the timecode signal fails, then the sound glitches. I try to keep my vinyls clean, but a keyboard shortcut to bypass timecode signal is a quick solution to emegencies like this one.

Even remote, there is always the possibility of a software and hardware crash. If you have the right mixer (with switches line/phono for each channel), you can do this mixer/soundcard conections solution to provide a fast change to timecode mode for analog/digital mode, jumping the soundcard and notebook. All you have to do is switch the mixers channel from LINE to PHONO and start playing. Click here... It is in portuguese, but I believe the draw can tell you more than words.

I am using those "Multikore" Cables from NI, which actually have a built-in Y-Element so that the phono signal is not only sent to the soundcard (for sampling of the TC) but also passed through to another pair of outputs which go directly into the mixer's phono jacks. This also works without the soundcard being powered on. It's probably the coolest feature of those cables. :-) It allows the mentioned switch from digital to analog and vice versa by flipping the phono/line switch on the mixer.

I am bringing my own pickups (incl. a backup needle) and the venue also has theirs. What's your take on this btw? You always bring your own I guess - just to play it safe. But do you actually use them every time, or do you usually only keep them as a fallback?

More of a longterm question about the "wear" of the TC vinyls - do you guys flip them over every once in a while for some kind of manual "wear leveling"? Or do you simply play them to death on A and then flip over to B, and then finally discard them?

Again, thanks for the input.

Dude. I always told DJ's I got for my hip hop night to bring their own needle just because the venue might not be up to scratch for their liking or just no work. I remember a hip hop act walking off their set after 3 mins because the dj's records kept jumping.

Also depending on sound card power spikes may be an issue. I found out recently with the connectiv the sound cuts out. but you already have that covered and it might only be a connectiv problem.

Always bring your own needles and never let anyone scratch with your needles..............I play 1 side to death, lmao!! Because I like how that side feels. Its just a personal preference but I wont let anybody rip my needles unless I know them and I wouldn't except anybody to let me either.

I did not know about these special cables, so I did my own solution and share it with you. Its good to know that you were aware about it.

I am a mobile DJ, so carry on my own turntables when and if I have to.

When you change the pick-ups or needles, if they are not by the same manufacturer/model maybe you have to change some sets at timecode config (as gain). Maybe you also know this, but any advice is welcome.

I dont see the vinyl wear as a great issue, because I am not a scratching DJ. So I dont worry about flippping them, but I do it naturally sometimes. I set the arms weight and height as the needles manufacturer instructions to avoid vinyl damage. I have two original VirtualDJ timecode vinyls that I bought 5 years ago and they still sounds like new, without poppings or jumpings.

I try not to smoke crack at least one hour before I do a gig. Meth is OK, but that crack makes me a little too nervous. Otherwise, you should be OK. Good luck.

Well let's wrap this up here.

Thanks for all the advice. Everything went well last night.

^ congrats!
