Does any one have information they could pass along as far as the legality of being a mobile dj? I searched google for nosie laws in my state (las Vegas) but haven't found an/any informative site's. Also for those that are a licensed (legal small business.) dj what are the pro's and con's. Is it a must to stay safe from the IRS or can I just be a weekend warrior and be ok. Since I'm new I'm Not to sure what to ask I just don't want to break any laws.

As far as noise laws go that would be up to local officials to detrermin. In my area for neighborhoods it is usualy cut off at 10 PM and any other indoor venue like a bar rental hall etc is good till 2 am. I have had the cops called on me a few times at partys but never recieved a citation for it. I was just told to turn it down or shut it off.

Pros and cons hmmmm. I just know the pros outweighed the cons and that's why I still do this. Once all the equipment is paid for and your overhead is mostly music/video purchases, and city/county Liceneses its not all that bad.

Weekend warrior is not a bad thing but you want to stay legit. Anything you make over $600.00 in a year the IRS wants their share of. If you plan on doing this professionaly keep track of everything you make and spend on it.

I do know some cities do have noise permits (block party permits also). You might just check with city hall to find this info out. As for IRS just keep all your receipts and write off all your expenses you can to lower your tax burden.

(quote+=djlp50 basically then if the the legal limit is 600 dollars a
year that means that i would only be able to gig twice a year. my rate is 75 an hour then plus extra for their is an extra fee if I gotta to go thru any hard areas to get thru a with my equipment to set up. so it worth getting caught with the IRS mine as well just get a small business licenses cause I might only get about 1 month if i'm lucky.

thanks guys any more info will help...

yes, keeping receipts helps at tax time not much, but every bit helps. I have had clients pay me cash in the past, Uncle Sam doesn't need to know everything! I am JUST giving my opinion here.... you can talk to an Accountant and see how much is enough to say you have to report your yearly earnings, sometimes it isn't worth submitting. When I took a break and only did a few gigs one year, I brought in under $3,200 all checks were made out directly to me, my account said it wasn't worth reporting. Now if your going to make some serious cash, then that is different story! You can make a great living in this field..oh and have FUN while doing it, doesn't get any better than that my friend....
