Topic: Question Regarding the right speakers to have/AVReceiver/Hercules RMX

由于该帖子已年深日久,可能包含陈旧过时或描述错误的信息。

okay everyone. :) not sure if this is the right forum for this but...

Here is a little Background:
I am beginning to become interested in the whole DJ/mixing scene. I just got a Hercules DJ Console RMX which is awesome considering I do not have to use my mouse anymore to change songs/mix etc etc. But last weekend I just DJed a college party (some freshman highliter party lol) just with a laptop lol (i tried not to sound too much like an iPod). But now that I have the Hercules, a lot of doors have opened...

My Problem:

At the party last weekend, well, lets check the equipment I used... I have a 2008 Macbook Pro, and I used the portable AUX jack to the portable AUX jack on my receiver which is a Pioneer VSX 520-K A/V Receiver [http://bit.ly/a3bm2h]. From there I had a Pioneer Center Speaker and TWO Cerwin Vega Floor Speakers [http://amzn.to/9B7xFJ] (and one of the speakers n the box is actually semi-kicked in, so not sure if this has to do with the problem discussed below...) attached and then I also had a powered Kenwood sub.
Yes, I know, a little amateur because its not a PA System but Im working on that, and that why I am here!

I started my 'set' around 10PM and it was flawless. Around 11 or 11:30 my friend told me she could smell something burning, I said it was the blacklight and disregarded her concern... Around 12:15AM everything shut off. The receiver I think fried or something. I tried everything plugging it in different outlets etc. It was REALLY HOT and not sure if the cabinet I had it in was enough air circulation. It only had about 4 inches above it, and the recommended clearance is 16 inches... So I hastily hooked up the ipod to the Sub and i played the bass the rest of the night while explaining to everyone who asked that my shit fried and it will come on soon, which it didnt. Good news is I got the receiver fully replaced at Best Buy no questions asked. Bad News, I am not confident of my system. Will it fry again if I do the same as last time? Crap I dont know. I just want a good sounding system and not be embarrassed like last time. Also, I learned my lesson because my floor speakers were not even at head-level so most of the sound was muffled by everyones legs and asses. BTW we play mostly mainstream pop, hip-hop, and some dance at my school for parties.

Anyways, is there a way I can make sure this wont happen again. I may want to DJ a party again this weekend for my friend. Should I get a PA System? Get an Amp? ditch the crappy craigslist floor speakers? Also, those speakers are i think 'passive' so there is no powere in them and not sure if that has to do with the Receiver frying, although I did have it on full blast for 2 hours... I REALLY wanna be able to have a mobile DJ setup but not sure if my system suffices, I think it falls in the Home Theater sound system category lol. But I am on a tight budget so I have no idead what to get to make it so it doesnt fry. Also, should I even use my receiver? dam I am such a noob ... ;-)

THANKS FOR YOUR HELP IN ADVANCE!!

bump?

No power in those speakers, and yes get a PA system hired.

Jeez, where to start...

Firstly as far as I am aware the RMX has a built in sound card so you can connect that directly to an amplifier.

Home AV systems simply are not designed for public 'PA' use or to run continually at full blast, I can only imagine the amount of distortion that you were putting out. I'm not surprised something fried lol.

Far better off to get a cheap PA system, second hand or whatever.

Thanks, any suggestions on cheap websites that sell powered speakers/PA Systems under $200 or so?

You need to think of your reputation as a upcoming DJ!! You don't want to keep doing partys with subpar equipment. $200.00 for a PA is not going to cut it. Sure you may be able to find a very small PA for that price but you will soon find that you are wanting/needing more power in a PA system and then end up spending more on what you should have bought to begin with. I know college partys and the can quickly grow to hundreads of kids very quickly and that, that many peoples legs buts and voices can drown out the sound of most small PAs easyly. This is just my opinion of course. But what ever you get you need to have at least 400 watt program power per speaker. I would go with active speakers rather than a amp and two passive cabs. Anyways Look at spending at least $800.00 + on your PA regardless of what type you get, you wont regret it and you will find they will start to pay for themselves quickly.

Also upgrade to the Pro version of VDJ you won't regret that either!!

THANKS! I was going to DJ this weekend but I think I need to save up for better sound equipment. Most of the DJs I know at my college have been booked lately with weddings. I guess doing a college party for free doesnt cut it when you can make $$ haha.

At least start by hiring a PA.

Even if you don't make anything yourself in the first few gigs, once it gets around you have a decent PA to use you can up your price and put the difference in to the kitty for your new PA.

The best way to save for your PA is to be out there establishing yourself and getting paid at the same time. You'll end up with your own PA in no time...

ok if you want to do what errybody else is saying..go to american musical, you can get a nice rig, and make payments..i would look into that.
