Whats up guys, i was hoping maybe someone here could help me out. I'm looking for a good way to record vocals on some of the tracks I've been producing on my PC. Right now Im using an M-Audio fast track, but there is a delay between the mic and the computer and its causing the recordings to be off beat by a split second. Im using Reaper to record the vocals and Re-wiring reason 4.0 through it for the tracks. All my latency settings look good so im pretty sure its the hardware. Thanks =D

I have that too, I am working on replacing it because it is total crap.

haha agreed it is a piece of junk. There are so many items on my wish list it makes me want to scream. Reflecting back a bit I don't think it was the best decision to try and build my dj Rig and a home studio at the same time. Oh well Another year of working and I should have everything I need.

rather than using an external sound card why not use an internal pci card? I have been using pc to record in my studio for 13 years and have ALWAYS used an internal sound card. I use a soundblaster Xtreme FX and only have to bump my latency in cool edit a bit to match. you can get an internal card for about $100 USD for a decent one that will work great for recording.

Also what OS are you running? there are a few things that can cause the delay in windows.

Thanks for the reply. Im running vistax64 (prolly not the best for recording). My specs are fairly solid though. Xps 630i, Quad Core, 4g ram.

are you running your mic through an interface? Cuss then there is nothing you can do about latency
is it for recording or live?

if for recording then can't you just nudge the vox track a few frames?
For live, just set up some latency compensation (I think vdj does this) if not Fruity Loops does :P

*Not intened to be a bump*

I reccomend yourself getting an external soundcard/audio interface no matter what people say; Internal sound cards cannot produce high sound quality (96khz upwards), your average will strain to produce 48 khz and your not even getting that then - some crappy aliazed sound.
Of course you will get a tiny amout of latency because it has to double convert the signal but it's worth it, although, the studio I use frequenty which has:

-M-Audio Interface
- 8 (12 slot) patch bays (5 F, 3 M)
- dual screen mac running Pro Tools
-Compression unit
- Head phone splitter amp
- soft limiter

I've once used nearly all of the above things for a CD quality recording and experienced no latency problems, and this was a recording done in multiple rooms with stacks of mic cables.
The only time we experience massive lag (in the 1 second+ region) is using the headphone amps, but there's a reason for that - not explained here.

you shouldnt have a problem with latency on the m- audio interface .can you provide more details on your daw setup regarding tracks , plugins bit rates etc etc ?

Many audiocards will have their own interface which needs to be synchronised with the daw software..Latency settings around & under 10ms will give great results but 24 bit audio recording , plugins & fx , multiple tracks, additional items in usb ports & disk buffer size will cumulativly influence the latency......

Have you tried recording just the audio alongside the metronome to see if the problem exists at the source?
