Bottom line is this if you're gonna become a mobile operator:
Forget being a DJ first
Be a businessman or salesman first; DJ second. Get the sale, then rock the house.

That about sums up being a mobile DJ. Good job Marcel.

High Fives to Teary and Chuckers
Took me a while to learn that one, but I'm starting to see the fruits of my labours.
It's all about sales.

"Always be closing if you want the knife set". And, "coffee is for closers" are sad, but true, catch phrases. If you can't get in front of, or in the ear of, the audience it doesn't matter how good of a DJ you are.....

What has me upset is he had logos for different groups (i.e. ADJA, etc..) that he wasn't apart of, he is using pirated software and music. I have a ton of money in my system and I own all of it LEAGALY it really pi**es me off. He isn't in my direct area but he could be. I reported him to the agencies he had logos for and he had removed them after they threatened them. If he lies about that then he shouldn't be doing this. That what makes me mad just be honest.

I don't understand why some of you upset with this DJ charging whatever he is charging. He may rise his prices overtime. He is already getting more money than other DJ's who work for various DJ companies for $25 an hour.
What do you want him to charge with CHAUVET COLOR BANK and BEHRINGER EURORACK MIXER? He needs better equipment to charge more and stay competitive.

Look on the bright side folks, you lot across the pond get paid waaaaay better than most of us UK types! The average wedding here pays between £150-£250, even if you're not a joker with Fisher-Price equipment and a hard drive full of BitTorrent mp3s...

How do you know he is not a member of those organizations...did you call and check up on him? How do you know he has pirate software and music...did you send the riaa in to audit him?
In this economy, especially in the smaller markets people just aren't paying as much as often as they used to because they don't see the added value in an expensive Dj anymore.
Not every Dj offers a show worth $1000 per night, and not every consumer thinks ANY DJ show has a value of $1000 a night. At a club the Dj worth can many times be measured in lost or gained sales, but at a private event it is TOTALLY SUBJECTIVE to the taste of those paying the bill for that one night. Sometimes the cheaper DJ show is as good OR BETTER and competition in the market is very very stiff as there are probably 10 times as many quality Djs in any given market today as there was 5 years ago....price has no bearing on quality in this day and age and if you think it does then you obviously haven't heard of Wal-Mart, Hyundai, foreclosed homes, value menus or Southwest airlines.
Do you think BMW complains that a comparable class Hyundai costs 1/5 the price and is actually better in quality and reliability and has a 300% better and longer warranty? No they don't because they attract a customer with a different mindset....BMW goes after customers who believe style is better than substance and Hyundai owners would care about substance over style. BMW owners care about the "Look At Me I Have A Beamer and it cost me LOTS of money" factor and Hyundai owners don't care what you think of them and would rather buy a car AND a house for the same amount of money as the BMW costs. Some wedding couple believe music is music and the best man can give announcements as competently as a Dj and they would rather get a caterer and a Dj for just the cost of a Dj.
I mean think about it, the average wedding is 100 people and if you charge $1000 that's $10 per person....double the cover charge at most nightclubs...and I GUARANTEE none of those people will have as good a time as if they went to the nightclub....no matter who you are..... because it is a wedding!!
Bottom line is if you want top dollar you must market to and only accept customers who are unwilling to look at discounted products and leave the other 90% of the market to others to fight over.....but don't complain if you don't have enough style to make it in the style over substance market.

As a matter of fact yes I did check up on them. I also did send VDJ a notice and RIAA. I charge a lot more than him and I am booked, that is not what I am saying I refuse to let dishonest people profit from the others who do OWN what we have. I have alot invested in my company. I have been DJ'ing for close to 30 years and why should I not care about someone who misrepresents themselves in a industry that I work in. So what your saying is it's ok to lie to people just because they don't charge as much as me. Am I missing something here.

Not everyone will be as honest as you... and how do you know his mindset. A lot of starter DJ's probably borrowed (that's illegal right?) CD's and started with cheap lame hardare - I know I did - although it was vinyl back then ;-)
Have you confronted him? Do you know his music is illegal? Has he said he's NEVER gonna buy VDJ? Has he said he's NEVER gonna upgrade his hardware? has he said he is NEVER going to join those organisations?
I know many start up businesses that make ludicrous claims to get the business off the ground, but as the business grows, they make good on those claims - not everyone does, but those that are successful usually do. remember the internet can make any one man company look and feel like a multi-national corporate.
Think about it. What if one day he turns up with a rig twice as big as yours, with much better equipment and completely legal software and music. How? because his business plan was to save every penny he got from his early days and re-invest.
Now obviously this is just an opnion - I have no idea who he is or what he does. But rather than worry about him and what he does, I would concentrate on your business and how to make it bigger and better without resorting to tactics that could put you and your reputation in a negative light.
I work with several other DJ's in my town. We offer work to/recommend each other, cover (if possible) if required at last minute and even gig together if the event is large enough. There's also a couple we know of and work with - if we have to - but that's more to do with keeping an eye on them as their tactics are sometimes less than credible.
What's the saying: Keep your friends close and your enemies closer...
Rise above it and move on. Competition is healthy.

That there about sums it up!!
It seems like he feels threatened............ maybe that means he needs to step his game up..................just sayin.
Although he might be on to something with those cd's. I think Linkin Park does that with their shows. You pay alittle more for your ticket but you get a copy of that nights show, not a bad idea in my book.

Thank you, that helped make my point..
If you were a member I was going to say that you did all you could do..
yes, it sucks when Those of us who do our due diligence and do everything we can to run a legal above board business, have to compete with DJ's who don't.. its unfair..
the sad truth is the average consumer doesnt give a frack.. until the 'day of', and then in many cases 'they get what they paid for'..
little comfort, I realize, but thats it..
The 'fly by night -bottom feeder' DJ's grow like weeds.. nothing you can do about.. music is cheap, equipment is cheap, and lets be honest, the ability to play other peoples music doesnt take a lot of talent (in the beginning)..
So instead, of wasting energy on those people..
your best bet is to just make sure YOUR TALENT is at a level that can't even be compared to them..
You dont 'compete' with an ipod right? so why compete with them?
Let the cheap-ass people hire them.. and then whine and complain about how their DJ didnt show up or was boring..
When guests at a wedding see YOU, that only makes you look better..
Do you truly want to make a difference in the industry??
Then join either a local or national association..
Ones like the ADJA are actually striving to educate the public, and its working! (if it wasnt, why are DJ's using their logo?)
but its a strength in numbers thing... the more DJ's that join, the more they can do to make real changes..
