Topic: Advice Needed for new Computer and controller pleeeeeaaase!

由于该帖子已年深日久,可能包含陈旧过时或描述错误的信息。

Hello Guys, I currently have a Gateway Core2Duo 2.2Ghz with 4GB Ram on Windows 7 64bit and a 2Tb Hd full of Promo Only VOBs. I also have a total control attached to it.

It is working fine, but I feel the need to get more "professional" if you understand... the Total control gets the job done, but it looks very cheap. Also, I am not comfortable on scratching videos and loading video after video back to back so quick. I fear that windows will crash.

So... A lot of people tell me: Get a Macbook Pro, that's what the pros use! Well, first of all am willing to get one even though i do not like macs, but the thing is : a very good Macpro with i7 Processor 4Gb ram , 512MB Dedicated video card is $2300, in the other hand an Asus gaming laptop with a faster i7 processor, 8Gb ram and 1Gb Video card is about $1500 ... so, I guess i would choose a kick ass pc instead, unless you tell me that the Mac will perform better for video. Also, I was looking to get a NS7 to replace the Total control, or should I buy the Timecode unit and use it with my Denon 3500s ? ( do they work well ? ) Thanks for the ideas... I really dont know what step should i take!

That Asus Gaming laptop sounds really good. I would buy that instead of the Mac. Now.. There are rules you follow when using a Pc for Dj use. Dont use it for downloading anything unless its important updates. Browsing the net etc. Keep the most important programs you need and nothing extra. I use my desktop for downloading songs and getting my videos etc and then i pass it over to my mac. For equipment.. the NS7 looks good or the Denon 3700's. The 3500's are not worth getting.

I know many good pro DJ's and some So,So djs using a mac. Some of them just use it because its a mac and dont want to use a PC... (They dont know anything about compueters). I had a Dell 1501 Amd Turion 2.0ghz dual core with 2 gigs of ram.. just for music and i never had a problem. The only reason why i got that mac is because i got a crazy good deal. My mom also needing a laptop so i gave here mine. I know a couple of Pro djs using a PC and they dont have problems. I know because we network and share information.

If your using a Laptop for other things than DJ iing, Theres a difference between Mac & PC.

And if you're gonna get virtual dj pro etc. the tons of plugins for Virtualdj are more compatible with windows than mac.just a thought..

I had a feeling that Mac is not really that big of a deal. It's a good computer indeed, but a well kept clean OS PC can perform better. also, for the Denons 3500 I already have those, I purchased then when they came out in 2007 I guess, they worked fine and still do, but I dont know how they interact with the time code system. some people say that there are major compatibility issues

i run pc and have always ran it with no problems just do as others said keep ti for djing and djing only.

@ Fredmiami. Timecodes can play on any cd player

I am running on an asau g7 that I bought a month ago and it works great. I also debated on getting a Mac, but the $1000 I saved on the Asus was well worth it. I do all music videos, vob from promo only and mp4's and no issues with crashes or freezing so far. Also like it was mentioned before, the number of transitions and effects is a lot better for pc.

Cool! So a Good PC dedicated for Vj'ing is the way to go. Now, as far as controllers ... NS7 , Total control or Time Code + Denon 3500 ? or any other idea appreciated... The problem on using the denons is how are you controlling Faders, EQ, etc? as far as i know, you could only do play, cue, pitch and scratch right?

One thing i noticed about the Asus laptops is, They have VGA. I dont want VGA, I want DVI. You spending good money to get VGA ?.. come on now.

For what I know all computers being made for the past 10 years till now still come with VGA. It's the standard. Now some of them used to come besides the VGA, a Composite or S-Video out. Now almost all of them come with a HDMI out, which is the same things as DVI. just a different connector. For home use, i would go with a HDMI cable to hook up to a flat Panel tv. Now, in a Gig why would use HDMI ? i doubt your Gig projector is a 1080P ( all Hi-def projectors are made for very dark rooms, high contrast and low brightness ), plus you'll be spending big bucks for a long (50ft+) HDMI or DVI cable and subject to loosing your digital sync over the long cable having to buy HDMI repeaters. So in the business end the standard is still VGA.

Mine lappy has VGA and HDMI, 1080p projectors are Cheap nowadays, and if your getting a new projector I wouldn't suggest anything less.
For Composite(S-Video/RCA) Support I use this little device here:

Check this cheap TINY projector out

If you have to use the same PC for DJing and Normal use remember you can alway Dual Boot your PC with 2 Different Operating Systems.
alternatively you can run a virtual Machine under you DJing OS, If your not DJing use the virtual machine. this isolates the system even better than dual boot. because when you dual boot the second OS still has access to your Gig Drive's Partition.

I am running a Asus G73JH
I do all my regular tasks email/music downloading/whatever~ on a Ubuntu partition
and Gigging on Windows 7

What about HDMI?? That's what mine has with vga. I have an Asus G1S and it can handle video like no other. And i mean like 2 videos at once with 3/4 video effects.

Hope that helps

They have VGA and HDMI, a HDMI to DVI converter is $5 bucks and preserves your compatibility with newer devices

You will NEED a VGA connection for backwards compatibility, with analog devices, VGA can easily be converted to composite S-Video/RCA
Doing that to DVI is possible but the converters are more expensive.

@ BeatBreaker. HDMI is good. I thought they only had the VGA cable. 1 gig video card is crazy... makes me want to sell my macbook pro with the Geforce 8600m GT video card 256 mb.

@ Fred Miami. My projector does 1080p and its very bright that i can have lights on and you still see it clear. I bought a optoma ew1610 with a high resolution because i wanted to get into high deff music videos.

My g7 has hdmi out, problem was the club video system is set up analog since everyone laptop's had svideo out. I thought about buying a converter to downgrade to component/svideo ($220), until i realized how much the hdmi cables have gone down in price online. Between the cables and relays it's only going to cost about $100 more to run new cables in the bar to get a digital signal to the projectors. I can say now the Asus was the best investment that I have made for doing music videos.

i love my asus..

Does your asus also have VGA out ?
