Topic: Opening a hercules RMX - Page: 1

由于该帖子的部分内容已年深日久,可能包含陈旧过时或描述错误的信息。

I just received a new crossfader for my Hercules RMX to replace the broken one, unfortunately they didn't send instructions on how to install it. It looks rather simple but i don't know how to open the case. Does anyone know how to do this? Thanks. P.S. I talked to tech support but for some reason or another they wont be able to e-mail me the instructions until tomorrow =/

I may be wrong....being as I have never pulled mine apart. But from the outside it look fairly straight forward....just pull the screws and separate. Don't take my word for it though cause like I said, I've never pulled mine apart I am just going from outside appearances.

Still no e-mail from tech support =(. If they don't send it tomorrow I'm just going to open it myself. Wish me luck >.<

Wow, what A nightmare! So i finally get the instructions sent to my e-mail regarding installing the new crossfader. Talked to tech support on the phone and they told me a couple times \\\"installing a new crossfader is simple, you can do it yourself no problem\\\". So cool, im thinking this is going to be fun. First off let me say the instructions from tech support was zero help. The first page simply states I will only need a screwdriver and to remove all the screws. Ok, well i kind of figured that. Then the next page simply states to remove cover then unsolder the crossfader and then resolder the new one in.
Wait I thought this was supposed to be simple, no one ever mentioned soldering to me and I was instructed all I would need is a screwdriver. I take the case off only to discover I must disassemble the entire motherboard and all the components to get to the back side So whatever I drive to radio shack and buy the tools for soldering and removing solder $40. Only problem is I have zero experience soldering on a computer chip. Get back give it a go and It doesn\\\'t even come close to working. I finally get the damn thing off (broken crossfader) and put the new one on. At this point there are about 40 screws, plugs, wires, nuts, chips, and components littering my desk. I\\\'m thinking I will be lucky to get this thing back together. Not to mention the screws are all different sizes, some have nuts to to tighten that must be put on at specific stages in the process for it to come back together properly, and all must be put back in there size specific place. The directions fail to mention all these things.
Many cuss-words and hours later its back in one piece. The moment of truth, I plug it in and it lights up, great! No wait the lights start blinking continuously and the devise is no longer recognized effectively ending my RMX\\\'s short life (Got it Dec. 23, 09) and the rest of my gigs for the summer. I have to say I am pissed because i pleaded for my unit to be sent in for repairs or returns but was assured that \\\"No problem its an easy fix\\\". Yeah maybe if you solder circuits and build computers for a living.
Anyways sorry for the rant but I had to vent. I am not trying to bash Hercules, but this has been a rather unpleasant experience for me, not to mention i waited 2 weeks just to get the damn part. I am hoping the will fix my RMX or send me another one. My xbox cost less than the RMX and when it broke after 2 yrs they fixed that sh** for free. I am including some images to show you this epic failure. Word for the wise if your RMX has a part malfunction, do not take it apart, trust me you will regret it.

Here are the instructions page by page in their entirety

Here is what the process actually looks like

This is the 15lb chunk of dirty scrap metal thats screwed onto the mother board you must remove. I can see no purpose for this weight to be in the RMX other than to make it heavy. I have to say I was very confused after removing this.

sorry to hear about your probs, but you have giving me an idea, that lump of metal (i forgot all about it) is coming out of mine as well, whats the point of lugging it about when it's not needed and the unit is in a combo flight case.

cheers.

Absofrigginlutely... Forgot I was carrying that dead weight around!!!

OMG,lolol,no that should not be funny,you're bad.lol.

epic answer !

Could you upload the PDF file to Rapidshare and post a link for downloading ?

Thanx, Heiko

Depending on what's below it, the chunk of metal might be a heat sink to keep the chips from overheating.

Yeah I will upload then PDF, i have to create an account though. From what I can see the metal is not like any heat sink Ive ever seen. I could be mistaken though. Tech support just e-mailed me and said I need to reinstall firmware so Im gonna try that real fast. Ill update the status of the project later. HAHA and epic post about the dead weight =D

**** Ok so updated the firmware and my RMX has life again, however now the crossfader is completely dead. (I had a feeling that would happen). Anyways back to tech support to see what they can do. If nothing else I will just buy a new mixer and use it to scratch with my TT's. In the meantime I guess I can reprogram the Main Volume Slider on my RMX as the crossfader and just leave the main volume maxed or operate it with a slider on my nanoKontrol.

I'm sure I can remember some mag reviewing this before its initial launch and they mentioned about the lump of cold metal just lying there to give the unit a bit of beef.

But I will heed your advice and get round to contacting Hercules support about it, someday soon, if anyone else does before me please post find.

The biggest problem I encountered when opening the unit is that thee are 5 screws that are only held on by a nut fastened to the opposite side of the casing. Meaning they don't actually screw into anything. When you first unscrew them the nuts drop inside the unit and putting them back on correctly seems to be almost impossible. This is due to the way the metal case, plastic case underneath, and components are layered. So now My unit has 4 holes in it where I couldn't get the screws back in. It would be really great if they mentioned things like this in their instructions for taking the case apart.

**After talking to tech support today they instructed me to take my unit back apart (which took me 3 hours the first time total) and take photos and send them by e-mail. Each e-mail takes at least 2 days for them to respond. UGH. I guess I will continue to battle with them for a replacement unit and play with my handicap one tell then. Wish me luck =)

I would be bitching and trying to just send it back to them to fix. This seems like an aweful lot of hassle. Im with you man this is nuts.

A few months ago I had to subtitute a potentiometer, cause I through some wiskey on my belowed RMX so I found that piece of metal too. I was told by the technical support that it's meaning is to prevent electrostatic charge and sound distortion, especially when used with external audio gears. I suppose it would be better leaving it where it stays.

I wouldn't say that I'm very handy but I anyway I managed to fix the crossfader matter pretty well so my RMX is good as new... except some screws I forgot where they are from. From the inside I guess. :)

Furthermore, the guy I spoke with sent me a new potentiometer for free, I didn't had to pay the shippment nither, well, it seemed ok to me. If I were you I would contact them back, I bet they will give you a solution. I mean not a .pdf one.

Good luck dude, and don't let the RMX die. It is a bit more than an object.

I finally convinced tech support I needed a new unit. It was a little difficult but it can be done. I understand why they want you to try to fix your own unit because its cheaper for them that way. I finally just told them that I was 100% sure my unit couldn't be fixed. They asked me to take it to a repair shop and I got a little upset with them because there are non here. I basically asked them to please honor their warranty and authorize me for a replacement because their instructions had actually been making my problem worse and more painful. I explained to them that I had good faith in their company and that if they replaced my unit they would be gaining a life long customer which is true. As a consumer things like this stay with you. So they instructed me to contact their main supplier in the U.S. I'm waiting to hear back from them now but it seems that I will be getting a new unit.

OMG! what a hassle!!! i hope you get a new one.
They must replace it if its still under warrenty... mustn't they???!!!

good luck babes.
