all that buffet food at the clubs and mobil gigs can catch up to ya .......
take yer own food and brown bag it if need be and maybe cut back on the beer .....
i don't drink anything except beer , no hard stuff , except very occasional shots .....
but it's very easy to get caught up in it and not notice how badly you are eating and drinking when you are having a good time and it's free
i got a warning sign a very indirect one , but i am going to be seriously examining what i eat and change it because i don't want to get diabetes

Common sense, yet totally random advice based on some non-specified experience that seems to be life changing to the original poster. Is that better?

Damn Chuck. I hope all turns out OK for you. You are correct about watching what you eat, and drink, on the job. If its not diabetes, it could be clogged arteries.....

Back in January Molson brought out 'Canadian 67' with only 67 calories & 3% alcohol.
When I first heard about it I though it would taste like crap, but lo & behold it didn't taste any different than Bud Lite with half the calories.
I was spinning 5 nights a week back in January & switched. I've lost over 30 pounds just from switching beer!
I have always been a healthy eater, but who would have thought I was taking in so many calories just from beers alone.
I just turned 40 & many in my family never made it to 40, so anything now seems like a bonus to me.
Rock on gang! Thank you Molson! lol

ol' chuck ain't too far off there kids... here's a really good caution for anyone doing all those parties and and wedding and who's regulars decide to share that slice of cake or extra food they have with the dj.
don't...
nothing ruins the next night at work as much as being sick as a dog cause someone forgot to wash their hands while cooking. lie to them if you have to, even if you're starving, and refuse it.
thus endeth the lesson, cause i gotta go take some more medicine.

It isn't the cooks that are the problem with washing their hands it's the guests, in a scientific study the most type of germs that were found on food from people not washing their hands came from... women, found this out over thirty years ago and I've never eaten off/from a buffet table since, whether I'm the DJ or guest at a party.
And stay well clear of the bar if the staff are wearing skimpy gear like bikinis, just watch how they adjust their attire... lol, you don't want ermm... cold sores.

Geez, remind me never to eat in the US again ... lol
Maybe people just take more pride in their buffets over here, but I've never had any upsets or trouble fom eating at a gig. However I do have a couple rules that I follow:
I will only eat if invited
I will only approach the food once the whole party has had a round or two
That said, if someone brought me a plate of food I would think twice on higiene issues...
Also I never drink when I'm working - sorry re-phrase that - getting paid! Something I just don't do. Even when I first started over 20 years ago I stick to soft drinks. As I have to drive home from every gig its not worth the risk. Plus by sticking to soft drinks, I cannot remember the last time I had to pay for a drink.
The way I see it is that I'm at work. The bar staff can't drink, they can take a tip or keep a drink "behind the bar" for after work, so why should I be any different.
The only time I will drink is when I'm not getting paid (usually for a family or a close friend) and I can leave my equipment over night and come back in the morning to pack away.
Cheers,
Roy

I feel the same way Roy
The last thing I want is animal flesh hanging out of my teeth not to mention a breath problem in a situation where I can't brush my teeth.
The music is up loud, you cant hear and your mouth is with in inches of anybody who is trying to talk or request music or announcements.
And yes, the food is not healthy despite how good it tastes.
Then there's spillage if you are behind the console, or the sticky fingers on the gear if you are eating and playing at the same time.
IMO drinking at a gig and particularly in front of guests is not acceptable and is unprofessional unless you are a club dj.
It only takes one screw up to have a problem.
The company I work for had a dj drunk at a prom this month and he spent 4 days in jail due to an outstanding warrant and a wife who couldn't gather up enough money to bail him out. He shattered the reputation of the dj company and cost himself his job and his own reputation.
Then there's load outs and missing or damaged gear and driving home with the other shit bag drunks on the road at 2am.
To me, its just not worth it.
The last thing is gear trouble.
If you encounter a problem, you need all of your brain power and composure to make that save should it become necessary.
Again, to me, just not worth it.

Too hear you guys talk about hygiene at a hotel or banquet centre is a little much for me. While I agree that overeating is bad for people (even with my big beer belly)
But you guys are making it sound like everything is laced with X-LAX
Eating at a Hotel or banquet centre is no worse than eating at a Mc Donalds or Tim Horton's, Mr Sub etc.....
Stuffing your face is bad.
Drinking your ass off, That's just silly. how can you be a MOBILE DJ without the MOBILE?
Drinking on the job is just silly.

Abso-blimmin-lutely...
I was the only DJ at my former residency that didn't drink - but I was the only DJ that didn't have to pay for his drinks and had the staff bringing them to me without even asking...!
One of the former DJ's used to drink pint after pint and by the end of the night could barely stand up. This reflected in his music selection too, getting darker and harder and driving people out the club. He would also often end up making lude and crude comments to the customers... Like I said "former" DJ. It was his two spots I took over!!!
Cheers,
Roy
