My apartment complex asked me to DJ at our pool twice a week. I want to accept the offer, but I'm a little concerned about the heat and my laptop. I live in Missouri and in the summer temperatures range from 80 to 90+ degrees F. Does anyone have experience DJ'ing outside? I know that direct sunlight is bad, are there any other things to consider? As always thanks for the help, peace!

Right, direct sunlight will overheat your computer causing skipping, freezing, and loss of control. Happened to me once and that was all I need to invest in one of the EZ-Up tents. Only a couple hundred bucks from costco and will give you all the shade (and cover from rain) you need. n really hot days though, you are going to want to maintain a constant flow of air around your laptop (or CPU) to help dissipate the heat. The USB powered fans that sit under your laptop may be ok, and I recommend them if your set up requires you to lay the laptop down on a case. If you are using a stand, better yet. This allows the airflow to circulate along the bottom of the laptop, which is where a majority of the heat is generated. It might seem a little clunky, but I use a small, non intrusive household fan and clip it to one of my cases. This fan is then directed onto your laptop. Of course, you'll want to hide the fan as best as possible...can look a little silly if done the wrong way. But hell, you're at a pool party and not a wedding right?

With the tent, fan, and elevated laptop, you'll be problem free.

Another work of advice....water will somehow find it's way to your rig. Whether its from splashing, rain, or dripping guests asking for requests, there will be water on the floor of your set up. Make sure all the connectors of your cables are elevated on your booth, on a deck chair, whatever to keep the water away. This is most important in your AC cables, but speaker cables too. Remember, it's ok for water to soak the actual cables...they are sealed. It's the connectors you want to isolate.

I've been djing pool parties for years in Florida and on cruise ships and have found these tactics to help the best.

Good luck!

With the sun shine your going to need one of these (Thanks to AMaHM for turning us onto this)

@ tearemup, that thing looks great! I do a lot of outdoor gigs and hate not being able to see my screen. might just have to get me one.

Keep it all out of the sun. Buy the tent.

I had an outdoor gig and the sun was hitting my laptop for a while. The next day the hard drive failed. Burnt up the bearings I suppose.

Won't do it again.

I do alot of outdoor events in Florida summer. As long as you stay out of direct sunlight you should be fine. Ventilation is the big thing, make sure your computer can breathe. Also make sure to keep your mixer out of the sun as well, it can get hot and burn to the touch.
