Topic: PVC Pipe Light stand with facade - Page: 1

Hello fellow DJ'ers!

Does anyone know if 1" PVC Pipe will support roughly 10lbs free floating?

I built a facde identical to DJ Rude Dog and I would like to run two 48" 1" PVC pipes up from the front corners and then a 48" 1" PVC pipe connecting the two uprights and mount my lights to it. Do you think it will support the 10 lbs my lights weight?

i honestly dont think 1" would hold, main reason i say is i think your center would droop and snap, assuming you would have the lights either centered or off centered.
 
That's what I was affraid of... I also thought about putting a 3/4" PVC pipe inside the 1" pipe to strengthen it, think that would give it enough support?
 
use a metal pole is your best option, drill a 15mm hole through both your uprights and slide the pole through those, drill two smaller holes through the upright and cross pole and push a 6mm bolt through to secure in place. Personally I wouldn't use plastic, use copper pipe with compression glands or something similar is probably your best bet.
 
Paul you need to speak American English. We don't use millimeters unless you are talking about a 9 millimeter, we understand that PERFECTLY. :^)
 
i was thinking the metal too, but i couldnt tell you how to set it up....and if you cant explain something...dont mention it..lol
 
a 15 mm hole is .5906 inches , a half inch drill would just be undersized..
A 6mm bolt is pretty close to a 1/4" bolt.

Canadian... and bi-lingual because the bloody americans wont convert to metric like everyone else.. ;-)
 
Sorry guys forgot that he was American, so i better point out, use a slightly bigger drill than the bolt your going to put through the holes.... rofl

I'm always amazed by this!!!!!

We are in the 21st Century and the States still use the old imperial scale. The UK went Metric back in 1971

Thanks guys for the suggestions. I found some 3/4" Iron pipe at lowes thats 10' long so maybe I will pick it up and make the light stand out of it.
 
You can still use plastic pipe, but put a wood doll rod through it, it will stiffen it up and keep it lightweight!
 
@ ddibbern, is that like the closet rod? ,,,not a bad idea.

Yes your closet does have a wooden DOWELL rod
 
Well everyone just wanted to post a update to this project.

I was successfully able to use 1" & 1 1/4" PVC pipe to build my facade and light stand. As soon as I figure out how to post pictures I will post them up!
 
Try EMT. It's a thin wall metal conduit.
 
cleight, you can't, post the link and one of the guys will display it for you.
 
1" to 1 1/4" should work well. I may try this for my latest project. I would be connected to the front part of the facade with plenty of length in the rear for stability & balance...

You could fabricate a 3 pipe truss type holder using the right glues like plumbers use.
It could be a lot of work getting the angles right.... you could also end light the tubes for a glow in the dark effect, maybe connected to a chaser for light changing to the music.
