Ok I will let you know what I am using now so you can get an idea of what I want to do with Vdj
At the moment Im using Vestax turntables and cd decks ( although I use whatever the club has turntable wise and sometimes mixer wise )
Im using a Numark 4 Channel mixer and the EQ is excellent and has kill switches, ( non midi ). Its about 13 years old but its bloody brilliant I hate using other mixers.
I am also using a federation red fx unit 12 years and its still going strong, I like this effects unit because of the control you have with the central joystick, the kill switches. I can have the effects looping based on the BPM ( which i don't like to much unless its fast pased sweeps and bleeps )
I mainly control the FX by hand during a live mix, Using the effect to enhance the transition, I have found some really cool techniques over the years. The fx sound crisp and real and teh control I have is very good altho that is mainly down to 2 knobs and the central stick. The functionality and integration of it is way dated and limited and I think its time for something new.
I also use a Roland Sp 303 again lots of knobs and buttons but smalll and compact, its my second one last replaced about 7 years ago.
Now I quit Djing Pro about 5 years ago due to family and boredom with the scene, but still occasionally do the odd gig here and there.
Relatinship status has changed and now have more time and I am starting again ( already have a new night lined up starting in about 3 weeks )
I have also put all my Vinyl on to MP3 and I am thinking of selling my Final ( Sacrilege, I hear you whispering under your breath ) sign of the times I say !!
Ok so enuff of the background
I have started using Vdj ( I also tried Tractor but for some reason prefered Vdj )
I plan on using my Laptop wit Vdj but I am also looking for a suitable midi controller and here are the things I am looking for.
Mixer - goes without saying. With decent EQ control ( I am an EQ freak )
Jog Wheels - im not a scratch Dj Im more loops and fx why Scratch when you can sample ur mates who is a Scratch Dj and can custom make them for you ( Sacrilege I hear you say ) as you can tell I am not a purist.
Effects control - I want to not only click a button and make the fx loop I also want assignable knobs I can play with the output ( 2 knobs is usually enough for frequency and modulation for filter/ flange fx e..t.c a 3rd one for envelope e.t.c would be good.
I sometimes like to use say a filter effect with a delay or echo type effect so the ability to have 2 effects controls on one product would be ideal. All these fx can be onboard or through the computer - it doesnt matter. I have noticed Vdj comes with some fx already and add ons are available, while the sound isnt as clear as a seperate fx unit they are still pretty damn good ( I only have worries with latency with all this going on )
Sampler - Again I want assignable buttons to play the samples and a volume control would be handy although as far as this is concerned i don't mind using the laptop for this as I usually have all Samples pre assigned b4 playing anyway, especially with the loop function on Vdj it means I don't need to have as many drum loops pre loaded.
Also if there is a delay between pressing the button and the sample playing I could do with pitch control to get the sample to fit altho again I could do that with the laptop but that sort of thing id rather have hands on control. ( having said that getting the sample too perfect sounds a bit fake and constructed especially not good for scratch samples ).
So in a nutshell this would replace what I have and put into a nice little package to combine with my laptop.
I have looked at the Hercules RMX but I don't think there is the control Id need for fx and samples and I would surely need a seperate fx/ sample midi controller a Korf maybe. I would prefer one unit, carting stuff around really annoys me ( im female and altho not a weakling its still a pain, Thank god no more Vinyl boxes )
Another one I looked at was the Vestax something 100 and there is a 300 version but that doesn't seem to have as good fx controls the 100 has a wet dry fader not sure what else.
Anyone that has used products that are what I want then please advice me and give me your lowdown.
For me its all about control and sometimes using just samples and fx I start playing live for a while without an Mp3 in sight ( have to be in the right frame of mind though and so do the audience )
I play allsorts from House to Beats, Jungle, Old School classics and hardcore to minimal Techno and Elctro, Im liking this new Dub Step malarky as well. Just as long as its Electronic music with beats base and fx and makes people dance. I have that many Mp3's now that I have been sent or given that half of the time I don't know what Im playing ( Sacrilege, I know ) but if it sounds good and people like it then thats good enuff for me.
Thank you for taking the time to read my waffling and thanks for the future help your going to type me in that nice little box below
