Lighting is a very personal thing but i'll give you a brief history.
One of the simplest is the mirror ball, which has been around from the 1920's the mirror ball is suspended typically the ceiling or stand via a rotator that rotates the MB at 1-2 rpm. Useful Sizes vary from 12"-24". Mirror Balls are illuminated by one or more Pin-spot type lamps with a very narrow pencil beam that covers the ball but with minimal overspill to the wall behind.
Variations include high power theatrical luminaries, LED projector lamps, use of coloured gel, multi-coloured mirrors In MB construction.
The Disco Era in the mid seventies saw the use of Light Boxes, chasers and light organs that synced Light to the beat of the music.
Light Box ranged from specially constructed cabinets to old speaker box's often lined with aluminum foil with several coloured light bulbs behind coloured glass. often 3 or 4 separate channels with a separate colour used for each channel.
These were run by sound activated controllers such as the light organ where the sound was classically divided into 3 channels.. Bass, Mid, Treble each driving separate colour channels.
A variation of this is the chaser usually with 4 channels, which in its simplest form turned on a single channel, one at a time sequenced to the beat of the music.
Later chases were produced that used all the permutations of the 4 channels to create a greater variation of patterns.
Today these units are combined into a controller which drives Pinspots, Par 58 & 64 floodlights, strobes.
"Matrix/zone controllers" use multiple channels to drive custom wall ceiling displays as well as Illuminated dance floors.
Strobes are frequently used to create exciting stop motion effects, either powerful single units or banks of smaller units,
caution is required when using strobes as they can induce epileptic fits in people with no history of this disorder, who may go on to suffer this condition for the rest of there lives, check for local regulations otherwise limit use.
Black lights or UV lights make that glow in the dark effect we have all seen, produced by high power UV lamps in special housings or special
UV fluorescent tubes.
Smoke Machines use a safe non toxic Glycerin mixture which is heated up under pressure creating clouds of sometimes scented fog enhancing light shows highlighting the beams of light, young people love fog but older people hate it use hazers for the same visual effect with no fog.
The lights themselves have developed from the simple the light box to separate discrete units with motor driven components revolving the lamps eg helicopters & Scanners, or using small motors to move mirrors to the beat of the music eg mushroom, moon flower.
These units having there own inbuilt controllers typically with simple sensitivity and speed controls.
Today all manor of lamps, motors and mirrors are combined into units with stand alone control or DMX control which enables all functions
to be preprogrammed and multiple units synced together in banks, or live control from a single DMX Controller.
The Newest development is the replacement of traditional lamps with LEDs, advantages are much extended lamp life, instant on / off for better sync to music, saturated colours pleasing to the eye, no cycle time as lamps run cool, reduced power demands, the only downside at this time is reduced brightness and added expense of these units

thanks for the history lesson nitebeat thats a good piece of info.
@bryantpb
well i know what a few of the lights are called and what they do, but only the ones people have in bedrooms or talk about from nights out.
i know strobes flash, siren lamps rotate and a disco ball is a ball with loads of different colour lights all the way round. oh and a mirror ball is well a ball of mirrors that reflect light.
thats about it.

IMO there are three levels of lighting
Spin and puke
Auto linked sound active
DMX
You can do a pretty good job with #2 using a switch box.
#3 is more complicated, but worth it for bigger shows.

Blulite,
Do you and you friends take note when out and about then? i.e. is it worth DJ's like me making the effort?
A lot of DJ's sometimes get the impression that know-one nows the difference between quality and crap.

well charlie, its dependant totally on if the light show is original. by original i mean it stands out and has that something extra.
heres the scenario (youve started me off now lol) you go on a night out. you visit 7 - 10 venues on your way. every venue has flashing coloured lights. and its just like "so what? who cares" now if we went into a club and there was a good dance floor with various visual effects ( fog, bubbles, foam, lasers video screen etc..) then it gets noticed. people talk about the dj's that go that little bit extra to please the crowd.
the chances however, of a punter noticing you use expensive equipment is zero to none. i would say out of every 500 people maybe 3 would notice..but only because theyre in the business.
not once have i ever heard anyone speak about the lighting show at a venue unless its had maximum visual candy.
let me ask a question, yes we here are all dj's of various types.
how many people here go out on their night off and think about what equipment the dj uses?
if its a good atmosphere and the party's jumping and your having a good time, socialising, drinking, smoking and doing whatever it is you do on your nights out. do you really care what equipment he's using? its not the price of the equipment that makes a dj, its the way the dj uses his equipment. you could have the best equipment in the world... and be a crap dj. or you could be a wikid dj and use cheap kit.
truthfully mate iand i say this with the greates respect and only to get my point across, no one gives a toss what your using. they go, they drink, they fight and then they piss off.
i know a lot of guys here will have a look and think "hmm yeah that looks good i might get one" or you would havd a scan round and name his equipment. theres not much else really, unless you go up to him and start having a long winded conversation (like this one) about his kit...but no one does that because he's working and its your night off..dont disturb him because youknow it pisses dj's off..and you dont want to start talkin about work when your not actually there to work.
oh and yes, it is worth you making the effort. if the effort is noticable and stands out from the rest of the flashing lights in the rest of the venues.
i think that concludes my babble.. hope this answers your question.

I will try to answer your question on what "I" think it's a basic light show. I assume yo are a mobile DJ. Look for all the lights to be LED, even the scanners so you won´t break the light circuitry if the place where you play has not adecuate electrical installations. Also you will be able to pack all the light instantly without coold down.
2 washcolor lights. Example, American DJ 64B LED Pro Black. With these you can put color on the ambient of the party. Make everything look blue, purple or green, etc. This makes the people in a party feel like they are in a nice or up party if used right.
2 Flower and/ or scanners.
Flowers are lights that are static but make figures of color move and change to the music and are good for making the people want to dance or just wow them. Example Chauvet Vue 2.1 or American DJ Revo 3.
Scanners; These are similar to the flowers but have a moving piece that make the sensation that the light is dancing. If you use pairs and sinchronize them they will look awesome.
Laser. If you can afford it. It's just for the wow factor a laser dancing to the music but believe me, it's better to have the other lights before this.
A GOOD smoke machine. Don't buy a cheap one. A good one will make all your lights and effects looks awesome, without it you can not see the patterns of the lights traveling through space. American DJ Fogstorm 1700 HD is a great machine.
I think this is a basic lightning set up. Don't go crazy on effects, first get the washing color lights, then the effects, then the smoke, then the laser, then go crazy.
Saludos.

I suggest with confidence, for a good, basic, unexpensive light setup:
Only LED lights
1x American DJ Fog Storm 700 (fog machine)
1x Dual Gem Pulse
2x Chauvet LX10 or American DJ Tri Gem Led
Total=US$ 339,96
If you want different lights, replace the 2 chauvet LX10 with 1 Chauvet Bank light or something similar.
Good luck.

I do mobile dj'n as well. Best bet is to get a pair of dmx scanners and a wash light. I honestly think this is the best start. Your not wasting your money and you can always add to it.
There are so many forms of scanners the choice is endless. I personally use a pair of the american dj dual reflex led dmx. its not too full on if your doing weddings but it looks good. When your doing gigs like school functions or socials they normally like the full on lighting. I suggest you get something in the revo series to pair up with your scanners.
Last choice on the list of lights is moving head lights. This is the bees knees of lighting and usually the last thing you will ever get in a lighting set.
A wash light is important because it creates a mood setting. What people used to use before wash lights was the old UV light.
Go for led lights if you can afford. Not as heavy, and your lights arent hot at the end of the night. Eventually the low wattage (300w or less) lighting will be phased out so dont buy something that will be outdated.
Smoke machines are over rated, dont get one unless you really have to. Sure they might make your light look cool but most people dancing don't like it. Most venues that I perform at don't even allow smoke machines. Smoke machines are useful if your going down the laser lighting route.
Remember start out basic and build up from there. You might be able to get away with a single light like a revo 3 or 4 plus a wash light as a start.
