I have a question. Does anyone use Final Cut Pro to make Mp4 videos for Virtual DJ? If so, what settings do you use? I have been creating my videos and then saving them with the following settings:
File-Export-Quicktime Conversion
File format: MP4
H264 <----- is this the best with Virtual DJ
Data Rate 2498 <---- Been making this number up
Image Size- 640 x 480
Frame Rate- 15
Key Frame- 24 frames
For some reason the video crashes Virtual DJ everytime... Someone said that the H264 might be causing it. I just wanted to know so that I can have MP4s run. There has to be a way because all of the videos from rocord pools come as MP4. I guess what I am looking for is someone who may know how the record pools save there videos.

Kurvy,
Give the following settings a try note you definitely need to check your audio settings as well:
VIDEO:
File format: MP4
H264
Data Rate 3000
Image Size- 640 x 480
Frame Rate- 29.97
Key Frame- off if possible
AUDIO:
AAC
320K/sec
16 Bit
44100

Doing videos for SmashVidz & Crooklyn Clan I have to say most of the information you gave is correct.
It completely depends on your source material.
Image size or resolution should depend on if it is a widescreen video or fullscreen.
640x480 = fullscreen
640x360 = widescreen
Frame rate also depends on the source material. In your NLE system (Non-Linear Editing) (Final Cut, Sony Vegas, Etc) you SHOULD always make sure your source material matches your project settings otherwise it could look pretty bad. At least for the trained eye.
For video encoding bitrate I generally use a 2-pass variable bit rate of 3200.
Gives the best results when you do a 2-pass VBR.
I have keyframes one every 15 frames. This helps software like VDJ and Serato Scratch Live Video handle the file for manipulation (back cue-ing, scratching, searching, everything)...
I also use professional encoding software called Sorenson Squeeze. Expensive but worth it if you are doing this for a lively hood like me. I video DJ, I produce, and remix videos so there for I will invest into what I do ;-)
Audio I pretty much put it at AAC 160k/s. AAC has better audio quality than MP3 which everyone is more accustomed to for settings relating to quality. A 160k/s for AAC is pretty equal to a 320k/s MP3 file.
Hope that info helps!

Why do people insist on quoting the prior persons post!!! It makes no sense and unnecessary ...
Please do not quote an entire post of a person that is right before your posting ... thank you.

A few questions. What codec do you use?
I show:
Sorenson MPEG4 PRO
Sorenson H.264
Apple H.264
MainConcept H.264
Also,
1-Pass VBR but at what Data Rate? 3200?
Stream type? Non-Streaming (Not Hinted)? Just a guess
Display Aspect Ratio Policy- Unconstrained, Maintain Aspect Ratio, Letter Box or Pillar ?
Lastly, you stated Keyframes 1 every 15 frames. However they only show it in Frames/Sec? They show 15. Is that what I want?
Thanks in Advance! I am getting excited!

Encoding is the process of transforming information from one format into another. The opposite operation is called decoding. This is often used in many digital devices. A content format is an encoded format for converting a specific type of data to displayable information. Content formats are used in recording and transmission to prepare data for observation or interpretation This includes both analog and digitized content. Content formats may be recorded and read by either natural or manufactured tools and mechanisms. In addition to converting data to information, a content format may include the encryption and/or scrambling of that information. Multiple content formats may be contained within a single section of a storage medium e.g. track, disk sector, computer file, document, page, column) or transmitted via a single channel (e.g. wire, carrier wave of a transmission medium.

I've been testing some MP4/H.264 encoded videos with Virtual DJ Mac several times and they're working fine, so I don't think it's the encoding method itself that's causing the problem.
One other thing...why are you using such a low resolution as 640x480? Even normal DVD-resolution is 720×480 (NTSC) or 720×576 (PAL), so you should use at least that. But if your source material is good enough, using HD-resolutions is not a bad idea. Even the cheapest LCD-panels these days are at least 1366x768 (commonly referred as "HD-ready"), Full-HD resolution panels are 1920x1080. Scaling up 640x480 video to a big panel is going to look like crap.

@Sherry1 I don't think he was looking for a CUT & PASTE from Wikipedia.
@djkurvy504, I'll try and answer the questions you have asked.
You will be fine going with the standard MainConcept H.264 decoder.
2-Pass VBR Data Rate 3200 (You can bump this up or down depending on your desired quality. 3000-3500 is a good range)
Frame Rate . 1.1 Keyframes 1 every 15 frames (Just as Low-Fat-Al- Suggested)
As far as your system crashing when you run mp4. With most systems it takes more CPU to decode Mp4 as compared to Mpeg2. If your system doesn't have plenty of headroom (Power to spare) you may have issues with mp4.
As for your question regarding the format type for video pools like 8th Wonder, Smashvidz, etc. they all use Mp4 as far as I know.
Hope this helps.

Don't forget to deinterlace if your source is dvd.

So, 1.1 means 1 key frame every 15 seconds. Because they have a selection for 15 seconds. Here is a screenshot.

The other thing is the frame size. I am guessing that I should "Match file? box"?
I am not sure about the way that the files are encoded, but the MP4s run WAAAAAAAAYYYYYY better on my Virtual DJ 5.2. I can just look at the CPU and tell that. Whenever I load a mpg it slows the video down. Some guy in a previous post did the math and explained why it loads better.
I am not really sure why they choose 640 x 480, but I believe a lot of VDJs put a Frame (Design) around the video playing? Maybe Al can explain that?
I really appreciate the help with this. I have been a movie videographer for 8 years, but we always worry about the highest quality possible. (MOV Baby :) ) Thank each and every one of you for helping me with this. This is great support! I don't think that I could find support like this anywhere else.
I am excited about purchasing 6.04 when it becomes stable. I have a friend that uses this and says it is not stable yet. Just so you know, I purchased Virtual DJ 5.2 and registered with djkurvy. However, I moved and lost my key so all I had was my disk. One day when I logged in, it would not let me in, so I made the username djkurvy1. And again... same problem, so now I am using djkurvy504, which shows me not as a registered user. (And yes, I tried the "forgot my password" link- both times with no luck) I really wish I could login to download the text plugin but I can't. Also, when 6.0? comes out and I purchase I am going to format and do a clean install. Thanks again guys!

i need some help as well with my virtual dj. i use virtual dj 7.02 pro and use Sony Vegas 10 Pro to edit my videos. the videos play fine in Windows Media Player but look horrible in VLC and virtual dj. The picture is just hard to describe, all i can say is that the colours are different and create "marks". videos that i havent edited play absolutely fine in virtualdj
the settings i use to render my videos:
video:
container: MP4 (Sony AVC)
bit rate: 5,000,000bps CBR
codec: H.264
resolution: mainly 720p/1080p
audio:
format: AAC
bit rate: 320kbps CBR
sample rate: 44.1khz
i will be really thankful if you help me with this.
