Topic: Club Setup Advice...

由于该帖子已年深日久,可能包含陈旧过时或描述错误的信息。

I've been working in the club now since August, each Friday I take my flight case & laptop in, replace the clubs equipment completely so I can play with my RMX & Q-SD mixer, then after close on Saturday I take it out again.

I've had time to think today (always dangerous).

The club has 2 CDJ-1000's and (I think) a DJM-800.

So I'm thinking, is there another way to go about this? Rather than ripping out their equipment can I just adapt...

I know I can use timecodes in the CDJ's. I don't scratch but do beatmatch...

The DJM says its MIDI, but it has a DIN as opposed to USB.

I thought about buying a Hercules Trim. The main reason for this is because I already have the Hercules drivers installed which should result in less potential driver conflicts.

The most basic setup would appear to be the CDJ's in to the Trim, Trim to DJM and Laptop and not worry about the MIDI side of things at all and just use the mixer.

However I do use loops, multiple cue points and effects. Plus I'm planning to mix video and looking for a seperate video crossfader.

Sooo I could get a USB to MIDI cable and also connect the DJM and map some of the buttons.

Does anyone else have this set up?

Advice and/or alternatives please.

Thanks in advance,

Roy

Ok, just fund out the mixer is a DJM-600 not an 800 so no MIDI...

Still advice and options please...

Should I get a MIDI pad for loops, cues and effects?

Roy

Cant the cue points be triggered thru the keyboard 1,2,3,4 #s

Even though the CDJ's can scratch, They are most preffered by djs that play Dance, Electronic, Euro music... Roger Sanchez, Dennis ferrer, Tiesto, Martinez brothers, Eric Morillo and so many.

Can't u just tale the rmx in a run it off one of the channel's on the 600, that what i do

If you use the setup for an external mixer with ur RMX, you shouldnt need the Trim, just use timecoded CDJ. Btw, im totally jealous of you

You don't even need timecode just play from one side to the other on your laptop from rmx wired off a single channel on the 600

Ok, need to be a little bit clearer on my setup. My RMX is flight cased with a mixer and I already use it in extenal mixer mode.

I did this mainly for my mobile rig, to save setup time and because the mixer has a built in SD card player which is my backup (no CD players to lug around)

I also double up with the other DJ from time to time so it would be good to be able to quickly switch...

The Trim would mean carrying less around with would save ripping the club system apart each week.

Thanks for the advice so far, keep it coming...

Roy

Cheers Jimmy... I am siding towards the trim...

I take it as I've already installed the Hercules driver pack that it will recognise the Trim if/when I plug it in?

Also do you use the USB ports on it for anything? Wondered if itwould be best to plug the external hard drive in to the Trim or in to the laptop, whether there would be any performance impact.

Cheers,

Roy

You still have to install the Trim when you first connect it, but yes the latest Hercules driver package has support for it. After that you can switch between the Trim and the RMX with no worries mate. I use mine with Windows 7 and it's been fine.

As for the USB ports I've never use them on mine Roy.

Thanks for your help Jimmy,

I'm seriously going to consdier getting the Trim this week.

I'be bought the CDJ-1000'a home from the club as they are not needed until Thursday with the intention of getting up and running with Time codes with my RMX as a test bed.

Having never really used any CDJ apart from load/eject stop/start/pause. What ar the do's and don'ts of a timecodes CDJ-1000. In other words, what buttons/knobs/sliders do anything of interest???

I am assuming the hot cues have no affect seeing as I will never be changing the disc...

I currently use the "stop" button on the RMX to toggle between cue points, but I guess I'm gonna have to use the keyboard shortcuts instead as advised above.

I am a complete timecode newbie so any tips and advice on this now would be much appreciated, especially any CDJ-1000 users.

Cheers,

Roy

Hi, I had a similar situation a couple of years ago when I had a regular gig at a club with pretty much the same kit. Luckily for me though there was enough room for me to leave the club's set up there and put my flightcase next to it, then I just plugged the line level mixer output into the spare channel on the club's mixer.

Personally, I have to say, keep it simple. You like your kit, you can use your kit, you know it back to front and can probably use it with your eyes closed. It does exactly what you need. So why change it!?

If there isn't work space in the booth for your flightcase you could ask the club to buy a small table/shelf/stand. If I had the same situation, I'd bring this stand with me.

I use this exact one when I'm mobile DJ-ing, it's plenty sturdy enough for my laptop, hard drive, controller and mixer all in a flight case. That way, you and another DJ can both play without getting in each other's way.

Just my opinion. Good luck with the gigs.

P.s. Yeah, it seems stupid just to ignore the £2000's worth of pioneer kit because it kicks serious ass, but it's not midi and can't control your cue points (a main part of your DJ-ing I bet!) and can't do VDJ effects or video crossfading. The reason it's so good though is the huge jog wheel which makes cueing and beat mixing more accurate, but you don't need that because you can SEE when the songs are beat matched in vdj.

Andy,

Probably the best advice so far... You're right, it's not MIDI and I do use all those 'active' features.

The booth is big enough for both of us and we did run the config you stated above on xmas eve.

And you're right, staring at those CDJ's was painful until you put it in to context for me...

It's difficult to resist a new gadget too ;-)

I'll start to work on the owner for a CDJ/Mixer upgrade and plan for the day for when I can walk into a MIDI booth!

Cheers,

Roy

That said, it must be worth while to connect the CDJ's to the RMX even if just to have a play and add CD backup in the club...

Roy

I'm sure Andy said the same as what I'd said earlier, maybe he explained it better.

In any case you now no that the 600 isn't midi so the trim idea was a bit of a daft idea, what i was thinking anyway.

PS, I bypass the Pioneer gear everytime! Bring back Denon!!!

Charlie,

I think (and I said it was dangerous) that I had my heart set on this new gadget regardless... Your advice was to simply run the RMX off of the 600 with/or without time code. Effectively saying I don't need the trim, but I was trying to avoid taking the RMX & mixer in the flight case in to the club.

What Andy said, put things in to perspective, yes there's a lot of expensive equipment sitting around in the booth not being used, but when I think about the features I use and the fact that the RMX has all these mapped for me, timecoding the 1000's would be a step backwards.

We had 300 in the club on Saturday (Friday has a long way to go yet), and if business remains good the owner will start to make good on his promises before Christmas: Better bass bins, 60ft projector & screen, more/better lights & lasers and a video hook up from the booth to the video matrix so I can start to VDJ. So finance is an issue at the moment...

I'm hoping that we'll have the club packed by the summer and I'll work on him then ;-) In the meantime I'll concentrate on getting the club full and working with what I've got...

Cheers,

Roy
