hi!
i'm a electrical engineering student and i want to build a low coast, open source DIY turn table so it would be nice to know how the(rs232) serial protocol works, witch instructions i have to send to the pc and how i can open the serial port from Virtual DJ...

You would be better using MIDI - It's easy to create a custom controller definition and mapping in VirtualDJ v6: http://www.virtualdj.com/wiki/VDJscript.html

RS-232 is pretty much dead and gone.. completely replaced by USB and Ethernet..
Since you can now purchase USB chips that do all of the signalling for you, you would be better off concentrating on that..

Yeah I've heard HID is the easiest. Check out djtechtools.com there's lots of articles on homemade controllers and ones made by smaller companies.
