Topic: effective yet inexpensive controller

im teaching my girlfriend how to dj. i need a very cost effective controller. just to be able to cue the other side. ive heard u can also use headphones with an upgraded sound card. whats my best choice? cheap controller or cheap soundcard?

Hercules RMX... nice, inexpensive controller with soundcard built-in. Great unit for noobs and pros alike!

I use an RMX myself, was thinking cheaper. Maybe Im going too low?
 
Hi mate

If you are using a PC then a basic multi channel card like the Soundblaster Audigy and the little Hercules MP3 controller would be about as cheap and chearfull as it gets. Would need VDJ Pro for this. (to provide headphone and main mix outs)

Better and now Vcheap to buy is the Numark DMC-2 controller with a basic mixer. (needs VDJ Pro and suitable multi chan sound card, see above)

If you have a bit more cash then the RMX would be a good choice. It has everything you need in one box. (assuming you will use an external amp and speakers)

I love the RMX and thats twice its been suggested. So the nurmark you mentioned, and the smaller hercules would both require a multi-out soundcard? Or will those cheaper controllers be enough to provide headphone monitoring alone? Because if I need both a cheap controller and new sound card maybe i am better paying for another RMX.
 
Leave rmx to gf and buy something more decent when you have already a reason. vci-100 or vci-300 for example.

If you look at the Numark and you are ok with using the mouse to control the VDJ mixer then ok, but if you want full control then you do need that sound card, VDJ pro and an external mixer. The Herc mp3 gives you control over the transport and mixer but still needs an external card. Bear in mind tho that these sound cards are as cheap as chips! Its good external cards for the lappy's that are going to cost you (minimum of 50 quid).

The RMX is a great place to start, and to introduce someone to most to VDJ's functionality. It is not just a one trick unit it can be used with video and also timecode so give it some serious thought.

Yes you can spend more, but you can always do that. The RMX is a great place to start.

I don't own one but have used one. I also don't work for Hercules BTW. LOL

If you currently own a n RMX I would look around for a Herc MKII. Very similar, yet smaller. Has a built in soundcard, and comes with VDJ LE. Everything a new DJ needs to learn with.

It has no built in audio, so if your computer has only a stereo output, you need a multichannel USB sound board to mix on 1 stereo output and preview on another sound card.
Of course, it is not at the level of a DJ Console Rmx, it is half smaller and half lighter (roughtly the size of DJ Console Mk2).
 
Just suck it up and buy another one and give it to her as a christmas gift....:)
 
Take a look at the new Vestax spin, only $249. They sell them through the Apple Stores, still trying to get over there to play with it, but it looks really nice for a basic controller. Has large jog wheels, sound card, eq, mic input and they say 100% midi mappable.
