So my school bought for the last school dance about 250 songs, and I was the dj. So I got the tracks on a usb stick from the school and transfered them to my laptop..
Are they now illegal copies, or can I use them at gigs/home?
Because the school bought them, and gave them to me to use them at the dance, so its legal to use them at the dance, but not for anything else??
Help me pleaseee I don't want to buy them all over again when I have my next gigs (300$ :/)
Do all DJ's only use legally purchased music or what?
thats a ton of money, if you lets say bought 10 gigs of music ...

hi mate
It is my understanding that you must have some proof to show that you have purchaced this music legaly. When you pay for downloaded music there is usualy a licence attached to the download, on MSN for example this showed up in a licence backup folder within your MY Music folder. If the school are prepaired to at least provide you with a proof of purchace reciept then you should be ok but this would require the school to relinquish any claim of licence on the tracks they have passed to you. It is a bit of a grey area but the bottom line is if you are not shure you should seek some lagal advice. Nothing anyone sais on this site can protect you in court so it is realy up to you.

i wouldnt be to worried about keeping the tracks, unless you use them to playin public a lot noone will worry,i dont burn cds or songs except for my brother,if i pay $0 for an album i dont mind making a copy but to make one for multiple people isnt good, but i would also think the tracks are kinda yours,i dont think the school administration will have much use for 250 songs

Ok Paul lets be blunt and answer your question.
Is it legal? NO
Can you get away with it? PROBABLY
I will extend this to. Would you feel ok about using illigal software to ern your money. I would hope not!!!!!!!
Yes there ar DJ's who will download stuff from Limewire or whatever but there is a sense of pride to be had from doing it right and this will set you apart from the Ipod bunch. Its up to you my friend.
Think ive said enough.
Over to anyone else

the songs are bought and paid for, they can do what they want with them as long as the don't profit from them.
it's good that you are concerned, that means you are an honest person. honest people don't have anything to
worry about anyway. don't worry about it, start your collection with them.

You're OK with this bunch of songs, I wouldn't worry too much about it. Just make sure you continue in your quest for honestly and integrity by continuing to PAY for your music like all of us other honest DJs.
You can make some decent $$ as a DJ if you're good, right? The same thing with the bands that put out this music, they are good and have a right to earn based on the work they put in to record, produce and get you their tracks.

Thats the only option.. you DO need proof that those songs are yours, and the ONLY way to do that is to have a reciept for them..
IF the school is willing to give you the reciept and sign it over to you (IE: have it say that these songs were given to you for services rendered, and that the school is not keeping a copy) then you are 90% covered..
otherwise
(and theirs is no grey area on this). no reciept? no proof of purchase?
in the eyes of the law those 300 songs are no more 'legal' then if you just downloaded them off of limewire..
Thats the law..
then there is Ethics!
Ethically, The Artist has been paid for those songs.. IF the school is not going to use them, you might as well!

I just realized how weird this actuall post was.. :-)
i'm going to be a little harsh.. I pre-apologize.. ;-)
>> heres how most DJ's work..
1.) people pay us money $$ sometimes Even $300.00
2.) we take that money and we PURCHASE things with it.. like music..
3.) using those 'purchased goods', we do more shows and make more $$
Quote :

no.. not all DJ's do..
Some DJ's actually care about their chosen profession/hobby. So they try and do things right.. they try to do everything possible to make the DJing industry respectable..
others
just care about the few $$ their making, and dont care that those same idiots make the rest of us look bad..
Ever SEEN a DJ protrayed in a GOOD light on TV or movies? nope.. me neither.

Wait, did I miss something? These people paid for the music, and gave you a jump drive. So, you did not just play them off the jump drive, YOU COPIED THEM TO YOUR MACHINE SO YOU COULD TAKE THEM WITH YOU. What is that smell?

No one is paid, and indeed nobody is interested in going through a 1TB HD to check that each of your 20,000 music/video files were obtained from a legal source, that is a lot of receipts to check.
The people who get caught are not those who have a few hundred illegally obtained tracks, as that would account for the vast majority of people with an internet connection; it's simply not manageable to that degree.
The industry steps in every once in a while to make examples of people. They're after the guys who take it to the extreme, with thousands and thousands of illegally obtained files, and worse those who obtain the source media legally and then decide to put it on a sharing site, 320kbps rip, 10,000 seeders, that's an issue.
If such a rare scenario was to arise, that somebody wanted to check your drive file by file..., and they were only to find a few hundred non legal files, amongst thousands, well they'd either shake your hand for being generally honest or give you a mild slap on the wrist.
That's today’s standard, tomorrow is a different day.
btw: I can't prove ownership or provide receipts for all of my media, I haven't kept any of it, however that's not sufficent justification to call me a thief, there's no clause when you buy a CD that says you must retain the receipt, there's a little thing called evidence (needed for prosecution).

Totaly true Bagpuss.
No one keeps reciepts for cd's ( unless you have to for accounting) but having the original disc is enough proof. I assume you don't throw your discs away once you have ripped them. LOL.
I know the system is not policed very well. But the posters question was "is this legal"
To which the answer is still NO.

Sorry but 8th Wonder is NOT licensed by the record labels to distribute music or video and should not be considered a "legal site" in this context.
To my knowledge there are only (3) companies in the U.S. licensed by the labels to provide music & video to mobile/club DJs.
PromoOnly, TMStudios, & Rock America. (And sorry but ITUNES is NOT in the list either, ITUNES are technically for PRIVATE USE ONLY and it's stated so in their legal section. The point here is just because you pay "something" for music or video doesn't mean it's always legal for you to play it anywhere and everywhere you want.
I don't think there is a DJ with all 100% legal music so I'm not casting any stones. I spend over $200 a month on music & video from PromoOnly and I've been a subscriber since 1996 but I can't say ALL my music/videos are legal for me to play in a public performance where I'm receiving compensation. I have each and every one of the original CD's & DVD's available for inspection as well as a valid written contract on file with with PromoOnly to use the content along with monthly charges to my VISA card, not pay-pal. (The only thing 8th Wonder requires (along with a couple of other re-mix sites) is a link to your pay-pal account, nothing more) $$$
Deciding how "legal" one wants to be is a personal decision. I error on the side of "mostly legitimate", bought and paid for LICENSED music. Some people steal the majority of their content from peer-to-peer & torrents sites along with a their "freshly cracked" copy of Virtual DJ. If stealing hubcaps were still popular these same folks would probably have a set of those as well. (Spinners of course) I think the majority of DJ's who play professional venues error on the side of mostly legal content. How one conducts their business is THEIR business, I'm not here to judge.
I'm only here to spread sunshine and goodwill throughout the forum. If someone could make me a logo with a colorful rainbow shooting out my ASS I would appreciate it.

I always wonder how much my music collection cost me. crates of cds tapes ect. $30k $40K, more? It is sickening that people can just steal music and get away with it. I am not talking about the original poster of this but the limewire people, sharing, its just not right. Then when I try to charge fair money for a gig I hear, well this guy will do it for half the price. Why go with you, its just music. Then you have to convince them why... It just seems to get worse and worse no matter what it done..... I will stop whining now.

I love music so I think I love what I do but seriously what do you say when someone doesn't want to hire you and gets the other guy cuz hes cheaper? "hes stealing music!?" hmmm :/
