I've been testing and tweaking VDJ (Version 5.2.1) since I bought it over 6 months ago. I am still having some issues. I just got a call to DJ this Friday night in a club and I'd like to use VDJ for this ALL VIDEO gig. So I'm asking for some "tweaking" help please! Here's my setup and issues:
Setup:
MacBook Pro 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
4 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
Mac OS 10.5.7
External Fantom 1 TB Hard Drive connected via Firewire 800
Pioneer DJM-909 Mixer
(2) Pioneer CDJ-1000 Mk2
M-Audio Trigger Finger
M-Audio Conectiv Soundcard (USB)
First, I REALLY want to stay on the Mac Version. I do not have Parallels or similar and I'm not going to be able to config everything for a PC version by this Friday. So please save that suggestion. I'm hoping to use the Mac version with external control and skate thru a performance. But I'm doubtful. If it fails, I'll just use Megaseg for the videos, but I will not be able to beatmix (I don't have an external controller for Megaseg) or do video transitions.
Issues:
1) The external control sucks. When I adjust the Tempo slider on the CDJ, the audio sounds like ass, artifacts, hesitation, glitching, it's just not smooth. What files (if any) can be tweaked to get better performance? Are there any special settings to make in 'Timecode Config"?
2) The "Skins" that I have loaded are all maximizing the screen. I actually like that but I haven't named all the metatags properly, so the data is a hot mess in VDJ. So to solve this; in other software, I simply search in iTunes, then drag the file into the application. But I can't with VDJ maximized on the screen. How can I fix this? What's the best or most popular Skin for Video beatmixing? And how can I get a scalable window for VDJ?
And should I even try to use the Version 6 Beta version?
Please, any help would be greatly appreciated. I want to see this purchase be justified by me doing at least ONE entire night with it!

NO dont use version 6 Beta... you think things are bad now, you wont believe your eyes when trying to use 6.0.1 beta... Do things like turning off any bells and whistles on your mac like, hiding the dock, and the genie effect when closing windows etc... You can also try raising the latency setting in the performance window of VDJ... that might help a little...

The gig went very well. Only a couple of minor issues.
I did all the obvious optimization:
Airport - OFF
Dashboard - permanently disabled, etc.
2 issues I noticed:
Some videos sounded distorted. Now I'm not sure it was the actual video file or the software glitching.
There's a small triangle for the pitch control. As I would adjust the pitch on my CDJs, that triagle would sometimes not follow along. If I had the tempo on the CDJ at 0, those triangles were sometimes not at zero. But once I was aware of this issue, I simply grabbed and adjusted accordingly Annoying, yea, but an easy fix.
I triggered my video fades/effects with my M-Audio Trigger Finger. All in all, I was pleased with how the software went. And people were pretty amazed and all the crap I was doing, lol. People seem to love the videos. Now if I can only et more gigs to help justify the time I spend editing, data management for these silly videos!
