I got a question regarding cooling fans, etc/

Now by running my Hercules RMX console, it draws a lot of power from the USB doesn't it?

Now these "chill pads" that require USB power, I could imagine this drains even more power?

Is it worth it?

The one thing that scares me when I see stands, is the ability for it to just completely fall off.

Perhaps I'm too over critical?

I had that fear as well, so I use a long strip of velcro and hold my laptop securely in place with it.

yeah stand is best option as long as it doesnt have a full bottom panel to sit the laptop on...all it needs is a rail on each side so the laptop is open from the bottom..i bought some anti slip rubber pads like the ones on the bottom of the laptops, dvd players etc....i stick them to the 4 corners of the stand where i sit my laptop on and it works great so it wont slip off the stand since it only has the 2 rails supporting it. lol i thought of velcro but i also thought it would look cheesy lol specially when velcro gets old with all the shit stuck onto it..lol

I am always willing to save a buck and sometimes my wife hates that. In a pinch one day I took her Pampered Chef cooling rack from under the counter to do a gig outside since my laptop was overheating. She never got it back and ordered 2 more LOL!!! At $14 it works great for me. It raises your laptop about 6 inches (enough to keep a mouse under) and it is made of solid metal thick wire. The bottom is like a grate. Never had overheating problems since. Sometimes I also put a fan behind the uit to blow the warm air out and also cools me.

I use the Stanton Uberstand and also an Akasa cooling plate held on with Velcro. The Akasa Cooling Plate has an extra two USB Ports although they are only USB 1.1. The laptop sits on the cooling plate loose as the two residencies that I work in every week have a solid DJ Booth surround behind the laptop. I don't even use the re-useable zipper cable tie supplied with the Uberstand. I'm sure if was on an open table I'd have them more secure.

I use a 7 port powered USB 2.0 hub, I have the Cooling Plate connected to this along with my PC to TV Convertor (both only need power), External USB mains powered Maxtor One Touch 500gb hard drive, 'Live' camera and Infrared USB mouse.

My Native Instruments AK1 soundcard and Vestax VCI-100 are connected direct to the laptop USB ports (only 3 on this laptop).

If I remember this weekend I'll take some new pics and post them here.

The Odyssey L-Stand comes with four rubber stick-on pads, works great. But even without the stick-on pads it would be fine (unless you're DJ'ing on a shrimp boat in a hurricane, on a ferris wheel, or a swing set lol). Seriously, what environment are you working in or what type of laptop stand are you using where this is even a concern??

@Airbornegary

Thanks for sharing the suggestion for the cooling rack. Works like a charm. Constant airflow underneath. No overheating issues while practicing. I will let you know how I do at my first gig. You would think that these manufactures would at least raise the laptop a bit. I may just go to fancy cooking store and get a really good one. Now all I need is a mini fan and I'm good to go.
