hi guys, just a few questions about the above items.
sets:
do you guys build sets before you perform or do some of you just go in blind and create a set on the job??
how long do you practice your set and what would be the quickest way to build one?
i currently take 10 tracks and try to mix them, if they work then i keep them and if they dont i move on. once i have 10 tracks thet i know work i take another 10 and repeat the process, this can take a good length of time and is prooving to be a bit time consuming. any tips on set building??
midi keyboards and samples:
ok so i was in a charity shop the other day mooching around when my daughter come across a yamaha midi keyboard for £10 with a stand, it has midi in/out sockets in the back and i am quite positivei can connect it to my pc once i have my soundcard installed. the question is this, is it possable to use a midi keyboard in conjunction with VDJ? so if i hit a key on the keyboard to play a loop/sample, it will play via VDJ into the mix im creating??
if it is possable i think ive landed me another bargain because this keyboard looks quite advanced. if it isnt any good, then no matter because my daughter wanted it anyway so its a bonus either way and for £10 a bargain too.
now onto samples how do you guys incorporate samples and why? dont take that the wrong way i know how and why i use samples but everyone uses them differently. im just looking for some inspiration to step up my game a little.
also whare can i get intro samples and/or jingles for free??? like an introduction to who i am sorta thing???
lots of questions there so this should keep you lot busy for 10 mins or so.lol.

Hi,
1.- I don't practice a lot... I already do it for several years, for me is like riding a bike... just need a few to catch the flow again. I usually get the feeling to what am I going to mix. Looking the place, the people and my mood. I will keep people dancing once I never stop after that.
2.- Usually when I want to make a whole set perfect I could practice many hours (could be a week), but I don't do that since 1986 :-D
3.- You can use any MIDI device. If your current midi don't have a USB interfase, then you could buy a MIDI to USB cable. There are cheap and could be found in a music instruments store. You can use LEARN on VirtualDJ config---MAPPERS in VirtualDJ 6 and set all virtualdj pro functions you want using that midi keyboard.
4.- Samples: I use them to play sound effects, jingles and also as a back base music to do some live remixes on the flow.
5.- You can get free samples only after buying VirtualDJ Pro. Or make your own to do your testing.
6.- Yes it took more than 10 minutes to complete ;-)

Just starting out... it is good to have some sort of playlists..in fact.. have a feel of what works well with what
you may have several of these over time.. in fact.. you can have a lot... and it does take a lot of time to prepare
of course... this does not mean dependency on it.....but it does offer some sort of security.. if you are just starting out which is good
This also helps you to be creative because you can experiment... knowing that at least you have something to to jump back to.
This is called preparation... yes.... preparation...... and is just a part of the process.
same process.. where you check out a club before you play... watch.. the music they like... noting what grabs them or not... making check of what works on what days... (different sometime).
after a while you get use to not depending on a list.... because you would have gained experience.... knowing how to read the crowd.. knowing how to select the type of music they want.. .and more importantly.. knowing the songs...
Of course... creating a set (playlist) also helps you to see songs.. that you may tend to forget when u get caught up in the music......

@ acw
would i actually need a midi to usb lead??? i am ordering an ESI MAYA 44 soundcard which has, i believe, midi in/outs on the breakout cable. i assumed these would do the job. if not its no big deal as a lead would be purchased. just wondering.

I never have do it that way, try it. If Windows can view your midi keyboard also VirtualDJ will find it. If not, a cheap cable could do the job.
Good Luck!
