Hey Guys me and a friend are interested in becoming DJ's, but I first wanted to ask a couple of question and see what you guys think:
1. Would it be better to start off using a laptop and VDJ and then buy some turntables or the other way around?
2. What would you guys suggest as to getting our names around?
3. Would you guys suggest using a hard drive or CD's for our music
Thanks for your help guys

Hi guys
Setting up all depends on your budget.
The cheapest option:
Turntables - mixer - amp - speakers
The more expensive option
Laptop - VDJ - usb sound card - Mixer - amp - speakers
There is not much between the 2 options but this depends on what your going to spend on a laptop a decent laptop for gigs can cost around £600 then VDJ at £200ish and usb sound card at £80 so your spending out £880 before you buy the rest of your equipment where as a couple of turntables will only cost you around £200.
If you buy a laptop and VDJ then go for your songs on a hard drive as it is pointless using cd's as you might of well of brought a cd mixer for £200 instead and saved yourselves the money.
Personal choice would be to spend the extra now rather than later as VDJ is a great programme and you will find it easier for mixing and finding your music.
To get your name around - Word of mouth is the most powerful tool, but advertising in yellow pages or something like that can be expensive again depends on your budget. For low cost advertising use google or post out information to pubs to try and get a first gig and then hopefully if you do well you can try to make it a regular one.
Hope this helps.

Well it was not so long ago that me and my friend were interested in becoming DJ's and were asking ourselves the very same question!
Now directly from that, I can tell you that getting VDJ is the better option. Most people already have a Laptop or Desktop for basic VDJ use.
You learn the program, understand how songs mix and basically practice.
From that you can then go on to buy what you wish. Weather you keep it digital or go analog it is your decision. But the good thing is, that either way you choose, VDJ is compatible with both turntables, CD decks and digital controllers.
So basically you can't go wrong with getting VDJ first. Great program! And makes it very easy to get familiar with DJing.
