Hi guys

I have just got my laptop (now a dedicated gig machine) back from having a new motherboard fitted, just about finished with a reinstall (vista)
I’ve read in some posts that some software can be deleted and some can be stopped from running in the back ground
Can anyone please tell me which programs can be stopped from running in the background?
I know which software can be deleted.

This is my laptop model

Thanks in advance for any help

well guys going off past experience i wouldn't go out and block/delete everything in sight, just take it slowly and disable one thing at a time and see how it runs, i only disabled norton and my machine runs fine, sometimes to much over tweaking could ruin a perfectly good machine...

i did this by getting a book on xp tweaks and doing the tweaks

Tayla is right ....do 'em one at a time and set restore points ....

take your time block out a good spot in your schedule and be methodical ......when you are done still test it out well b4 any gig

in your case same procedure , buy or check out a book from the library on vista and do the same

Another useful tip, while looking over your list of options. You can google search if it is something that is important to the OS, or just a background service...

If it is a dedicated system, no internet use whatsoever, you can remove any antivirus program, turn off wireless LAN, onboard LAN, and other devices you do not need to run VDJ. You can off automatic update for the OS too. I would recommend to switch to XP sp2 OS because in my experience, VDJ runs better in that environment and XP is not a CPU resource hog like vista. Upgrading RAM also helps. Also I will replace the HD with a 7200 RPM about 250-300 Gig (preferable seagate) for peace of mind. The OEM HD that comes with laptops nowadays are not up to par with what we use them for.

Thanks jimmy will give that a try

I’m not going live with this laptop for another 3 weeks so plenty of time for testing

I’ve had this laptop running vdj with video and karaoke with no problems for around 6 > 7 months, I think because it was my only laptop at the time I hammered it so much I blew the mother board
I did upgrade the ram to a total of 2 gig when I bought it
Yes it is going to be now used solely for vdj

To all thank you for your advice and help

When you block programs in Vista you get a pop up, popping up all the time! You can disable it but then you get a pop up telling you that your account control is turned off! I would leave it as it is.

Also if you upgrade your ram past your laptop capability then that can blow your motherboard.

i actually have found vista to be better than xp once you get rid of all the crap that hogs your cpu. get rid of everything from your desktop and that scum ball of a sidebar, part the hdd and install your apps on the second partition. anything that boots at start up right click in the task bar and find the option that stops it. any junk you dont use and dont plan to, get rid of. you can also go into control panel and actually uninstall various windows components. as mentioned before turn off wireless.

also for a fast ram upgrade go buy an 8gig pendrive which is cheaper than ram anyway, plug it in and when prompted hit "speed up my pc" you see with vista you can plug in a pen drive and use it as extra ram space. you can also do it with SD cards if you would prefer not to have a stick hanging out of the side of your laptop. plus a 16gig SD may be cheaper than an 8gig pendrive.

vista is a far superior to XP, you just have to take the time to learn about the OS. and what makes it work well on your machine.

im always available on ***@*** (Sorry, contact details not allowed from unlicensed users) if anyone ever has any questions, im sure i can help. if not ill do my very best to find you what you need and answer your questions. oh and just for the record, i used to hate vista too.

Sorry to disagree with vista being better than XP. The only thing vista has over XP is the GUI which has better appearance(hence uses more graphic resource) A dedicated DAW(digital audio work station) works better on XP due to the fact that there are no unnecessary functions of the OS that run automatically in the background like vista has. A DAW does not need security features, etc..etc. unless it willl be used for internet. A DAW needs all the resource it can get from the system and faster latency time. Using another USB device in conjunction to the hardware connected to the DAW only uses more resources needed by the program like VDJ to run properly. The rule of KISS applies to sytems like what we use VDJ in, the simpler the system, the more reliable and faster it performs which greatly relates to the computer's OS and the hardware connected to it.
