2 weeks ago i lost both my main rig and the back up within 3 days of each other.....
so i suddenly found myself cobbling together a new system and the only items that have carried over from one system to the next is the monitors and ext hard drives.......
i have been trying to learn from this experience what behaviors from the pc indicate the system is sick as opposed to what are software glitches
i believe the disappearing software (sudden shutdown with no crash guard) as well as the slow song loading may be caused by a sick system
not sure .... i was hoping one of the dev team might see this and comment .....
i say that because those problems went away when i started using the current system
however i am still having the disappearing virtual folders problem ..... that hard drive is more than a year and a half old , and i am starting to think that problem is caused by an old hard drive that is having problems ??

Hello Chuck,
As I see, to be sure if there is a harddisk hardware problem, try some testing disk software. Maybe tuneUp maybe others... or all of you need. If there is a hardware problem, it will be find it there.
Also, just in case... backup in another new hard disk as much as you can, just in case you are right and the disk is about to fail.
Good Luck!

thanks i have my music backed up on 2 additional external harddrives and the video backed up once
i am still interested to know if anyone else has the problem where virtual folders disappear and if that is a software problem or indicates a deteriorating hard drive

i have a few tips that yourself and other members may be interested in.
if you have a 1 or more hdds in your computer itself you should alway use partitions.
lets start from scratch..... if you have only 1 HDD in your laptop/desktop, then you need to create to be 100% safe another 2 partitions. you should set your drive partitions like so to the size you think is necessary for your usage
partition 1 c:\ = operating system
partition 2 D:\ = software
partition 3 E:\ = data
now it your HDD is only relitivley small say 60gb and you use external storage then you can partition like so or use the method above and use 20gb per partition.
partition 1 C:\ = operating system = 20gb
partition 2 D:\ = software + Data = 40gb
the reason you partition the drive into these categories is to allow fast recovery in the event of a mishap.
we have all at some point unless youre really lucky, had a virus and had to perform a clean install. the partitionig of your drive into the minimum 2 sections, OS + Software allows you to recover your drive without loosing your vital software information and files.
when installing software eg. virtual dj, you should choose to install it into the D:\ Software partition. upon doing so your program files will be installed into your D:\ partition and the registry values will be installed into the C:\ partition.
once youre all set up all you have to do is to make a back up of your registry once a week on schdule or just once every time you install new software.
if then the computer is infected with a virus and it causes you to make a clean install, then all you need to do is re-install your windows to your C:\ partition and load your registry backup. hey presto you are back to the exact point you left off at.
if youre drive is large ( 120gb + ) then the 3 part method is the most safe as you can make a back up of each partition. if you do use the 3 part method you can wipe any of the partitions and re load from backup, resulting in a once again stable system with very minimal loss.
each part can and in my experience should be used as so:
always put DATA e.g.. pics, movies, music, photos, etc... into the data partition and never ever into the software or OS partitions.
never ever install software to the C:\ or OS partition.
never ever put data or OS files into the software partition and never put OS ifles into the data partition.
each partition should only be used exclusivley for its purpose and nothing else.
in the event of a system fail your VDJ databases, settings and everything else will be stored safley in your partition backup or in the software partition if it was your OS that failed.
if then you have more than 1 HDD then you should assign each HDD to different tasks, eg... in my machine i have 3 HDDs that are split into 6 parts,
1. c:\ = operating system
2. E:\ = software
3. F:\ = movies
4 + 5. G:\ + H:\ = music
6. I:\ = Downloads
basically the more partitions you have the less chance you have of system falior and data loss. in addition to this your system will also run faster.
the reason your system will run faster is your cpu can gain access to system files without having to rummage round loads of junk first. e.g...no user data in the OS partition meant it doesnt have to find its way through 5000 songs and pics first.
as for the HDD being a year and a half old, that should not effect your system unless it is corrupt. if it is corrupt, back up all your data and "low level format" it using ACTIVE KILLDISC , which you can dl free if you google it. once you have done so re-install your OS and format it to NTFS during the install. LOW LEVEL formatting will erase the disc pretty much back to factory standard and should repair any bad sectors the HDD may have.
on the very odd occasion you may need to format the HDD using another system, but this is very very rare.
one of my HDD's is more than 5 years old and runs sweet as a nut. 1 and a half years wont have even broke it in yet in my opinion.
if you want a high security system that is dedicated to dj'ing then i suggest using the following applicationsl, which i have found over my many years of computer use to be easily, without a doubt, the best free security applications around.
for Virus protection use Avira Antivirus
for spyware/addware use Spyware Terminator
for malware protection and removal use Malwarebytes
all or these are free and user friandly, under the protection of these i have never had a major system fail.
the odd overloaded CPU when im trying to do 20 things at once, but never anything more.
i really hope this can help people with their fails, and fears of data loss and recovery.
if you guys have any questions about my little tutorial or if you need greater detail as to how you set up your partitions then either IM me here or add jonteyg@hotmail.com to youre messenger and ill help you out.
thanks for reading and best of luck to everyone in all that you do.

Blah Blab Blah...
Dont bother partitioning your already tiny harddrives, as this will degrade the drives overall performance, and if youre on Vista, you WILL notice.
i cannot recomend enought that if you have just one external drive then get more of them and use them as backup.
as for your main harddrive (inside your laptop) get a program like Acronis Backup. this can make a complete backup of your system, you can put this (as a file) on one of your external drives.
But seriously, the above expanation for partitioning was something people used to do with Win98, not not now a days.

hmmm thats strange because i know a strange number of I.T profetionals that do just that, the main idea is to keep your software installs seperate to your OS files, that way you just load your registry backup and you can continue from where you left off , WITHOUT RE-INSTALLING YOURE SOFTWARE AND LOOSING YOUR APPLICATION DATA.
i do see where youre coming from about backing up your whole drive
but seriously who wants to create a 60gb+ back up when a registry back up is only a few hundred mb???? certainly not me. its a massive wast of space and time.
partitioning your hdd, DOES allow your machine to run more efficietnly as your operating system is accessed more easily.
i find it hard to believe that someone is so ignorant to the huge amount of research and use of these methods by I.T proffetionals, that they actually believe it doesnt work.
there is no comparrison between how it would work using vista or roflmao win98. the biggest reason these methods were uses in the early windows systems is because the CPU's were'nt capeable of handeling large capacity hard drives, so partitioning was used to allow the CPU to access information faster. WHICH STILL HAS THE EXACT SAME EFFECT NO MATTER WHICH VERSION OF WINDOWS YOU USE.
if your comp has a small HDD then you obv have a CPU to match no???? well then, you can listen to the rantings of a guy who says make an entire single 60gb + back up, or you can listen to the facts that have been researched and proven by thousands of I.T profetionals. your choice.
these methods work on ANY hdd and windows system. most probablys on MAC too.
the offer is still open to anyone who would like me to elaborate more. mail me here or on my hotmail stated in my first post.

I've been using PC's since 1993 and DJ'ing from them since 1999 and never had a HDD failure.
Saying that, my home PC has Vista (as it's a Sony LT2-S all in one) and I can see Vista killing the HDD on that before too much longer. All the HDD activity is totally unnessecarry and it's just soooo fucking slow doing anything. I would go back to XP in a minute but I need the vista media centre capabilities.
Why did M$ fuck up something that worked ......95% of normal PC's don't need Vista's crap so why force it on to manufacturers?
XP forever (unless I die first)

i used to think the exact same thing about vista but there are several things you can do to speed it up. side bar for one thing, fuck that right off.lol. its no use whatsoever. also remove all the startup items.
the quickest way is to right click each icon and goto its options, then deselect run at start up.. most progs have the option. just have a mooch.
as for the lagging on your hdd. no shit try partitioning it. you wont regret it.
unless you have a quad core the lag time on vista is atrocious but with partitioning your cpu can access the necessary's loads faster.
i hated vista at first and pretty much lied by the XP forever quote. i even gave it the name " winblows shitsta " anyway now i prefer vista soooo much to XP because ive spent a shed load of time getting used to it and discovering al the new stuff. i love my computers and spend supreme amounts of time learning and improving my skills just as you guys do with DJ'ing. which i only do as a hobby and need much more practice.lol..
wow come to think of it if i spent as much time DJ'ing as i do scripting and learning i would be pretty damn good by now.

I am an IT Professional and also a DJ... so I can second that partitioning your disk is a good thing, but also IT HAS TO BE USEFUL. I have 2 PC with at least 4 HDD. Both with around 3TB (also my laptop). I partitioned my hard disks sometimes when I first install and others don't.
The main reason to partitioned is to get speed and have less risk to loose your sensitive data in case of a software failure. For a hardware failure you need a backup or a RAID system.
The math is simple, if your overall seek performance of your 1TB Disk is 9 ms, then there is a chance to have access to 30GB of C (System) in less than 9 ms (let's say 1ms for example) because you don't need to move along all hard disk to reach your data. There are also other factors, but less than 32 GB for C System is ok, programs could be in D and Data in E... F= Video, G= Music H=anything else you want.... If you have all in only one partition, it would take more and more time to reach your data, because the heads of the harddisk are moving all along it... so it is less faster...
I know many of us don't want to have C-D-E-F-G-H-I-K-L.... drives on your system, but working with VirtualDJ, that is not so complicated to do. So I encourage to do so to get tuned their PCs. Also with another system fixes and setups, but always looking for performance and a useful and working DJing PC.
Peace ;-)

thank you acw , and everyone
thank you Tayla , he's right lets keep the language nice and prove to the world we have some class
somebody cue up " I betcha they don't play this song on the radio" (monty python)
i still haven't heard anyone else say they have had virtual folders disappear or if that is due to the drive that holds the database deteriorating ......
to talk about my partitions a bit , i have a c: that is fairly standard ... has the os , and all the usual default programs .....i run all the windows updates and have the updated direct x , c++ ,and video drivers i delete some but not all the factory barfware it came with and i clean up the startup and extraneous background processes ..... i usually end up with 30 to 40 running including vdj
i use alwil from avast as my free antivirus and i use diskeeper for my daily defrag of all drives all the drives are ntfs and soon all will be 7200 rpm
i use reg clean or pcoptimize to tweak other settings
currently i have a 500 gb WD that has everything ... important photos , apps , docs , all music and all video
i have a cavalry 400 gb with just music
i have a 120 gb seagate that can just barely hold the music and video ......so i need to get myself some more externals
maybe i'm at the point where i should be thinking about a raid setup
the music 21000 and some odd trax give or take .....is 96 gb
nowadays i use audiograbber to rip trax from cds , but i no longer rip to mp3 i use wav , sounds better and the increase in size is no longer a factor because the hd's keep getting cheaper .....
i would like to learn how to reinstall windows such that i only install windows and no default games and etc or better yet get everything nicely tweaked and then save it as an image
in fairness to myself i should add that i had 1 additional backup drive that is now shot ...it died a hideous death 2 weeks ago ...it had just music
so at a minimum right now i need a back up for my everything drive (1 or more ext hd's) and i need more back up for my video (1 or more ext hds)

I would convert all .wav files to .flac. This would decrease file size about 40% with no sound quality loss and will save you some time during back up routine. Also .flac supports ID tags which can be used in some programs as opposed to .wav.

i see where your going with the "no one else has said they lost their data".lol. i personally havent but my post is a prevention method and prevention is easier and better than loosing your data.
if you want an install of your OS without all tha crap and clutter, then download windows XP most wanted, you should be able to register it with your own key and it comes as a bare minimum OS. no games, defaults or even backgrounds. i know it could be morally wrong buit could be worth a shot and who cares as long as you can register with your valid liscence key.
you could then during the install or afterwards, make the necessary partitions to keep your data safe.
there is one other way to rid your self of all this junk which doesnt need a re-install just a re-boot here and there. heres a couple of links for you to read and they will explain how to do the necessary removals.

please let me know how you get on..
@ACW DJ, thanks for the secondary on the partitioning, its good to know there are others here that also use these tried and tested techniques. it is very true that the more partitions you have then the slower responce you get.
which is why i personally will not go over 3 partitions on a single drive if it contains an OS. plus i will only extend to 3 parts if i absolutley need to for the sake of my data and CPU. i do like the 2 part method where software and data are kept seperate from my os, but like everything there are downfalls to it. e.g... when you dl that mp3 thats actually discuised malware :( or that game your missus wants and it screws your data over.lol.
