Yes the Samples preview on the site is not functional. And an alternative solution is being looked at ... when we find one we will fix it.

* I know there are all kinds of solutions out there ... but some are just poor hack works and have issues. In the meantime I would just download the samples and play them and delete the ones you don't like. Not like they are going to take up a lot of space.

Note to site maintainer---->

Consider updating Cortado to the latest version cortado-ov-stripped-0.2.2.jar from here http://www.flumotion.net/jar/cortado/
Line 15 of http://www.virtualdj.com/js/listen.js has an error in it causing the error, getAppletInfo is a function, i.e. player.getAppletInfo()

However, Flash is the best solution, not everyone uses Java http://barelyfocused.net/blog/2008/10/03/flash-vorbis-player/

The whole preview system needs a revamp. Some of the preview files are lame encoded mp3s, resulting in Cortado to fail; the script serving these lame encoded previews is sending out the wrong mime type, i.e. 'audio/ogg'. Also it seems bizarre that the preview samples are the same file as the actual sample, e.g. http://www.virtualdj.com/addons/action/listen.html?addonid=1074 is the same as http://www.virtualdj.com/addons/download/src/1074/love%20parade.vdj where the former is supposed to be the preview.

The best solution would be to reencode all samples to 32kbit 22khz mono mp3 (or something similar) and use flash for these previews. The current system (if it worked) just wastes bandwidth and confuses the decoder due to incorrect mime information.

so it does that to everybody?

maybe's a sticky warning of the problem may help users...

We are not going 'sticky happy'. This issue pops up every once in a while.

We are researching a solution and thank you Andrew87 for your suggestions.

sticky happy, now thats a good one, call it what you want it was a suggestion, i had this problem and tried for ages thinking it was a fault on my side before i gave up, if there had been some information posted i wouldn't have spent so much time trying to work out what was wrong with my desktop.

MP3 is easily the best solution. Most internet users have Flash installed and JavaScript enabled (infact, even mobile phones now are beginning to support these frequently used web standards). Whilst it's admirable that Vorbis was originally considered, it's a format not well suited for online streaming without external dependenices (e.g. Java and the loaded archive is monsterous in size and resources compared to a Flash solution. Distributing the material as an MP3 surely will not pose any licensing problems, the Timecode CD files are MP3 and the radio station broadcasts an MP3 stream.

If you're unable to find a free player and are not willing to pay for a commercial license then make sure you check out niftyPlayer. I've made a small preview on my webspace demonstrating the suggestions I mentioned in my previous post. Using this technique the preview files are 13x smaller than the original samples I downloaded from here originally (although some of them were WAV files).
