Topic: What a week that was!!!

..............had a total nightmare last weekend. My internet laptop completely died (ex DJ laptop 6 years old). Couldn't get into Safe Mode, couldn't boot from CD, could only get access to the Setup and nothing else. Even worse, my business accounts since 2002 were on there and no backup!!! Yeh, I know.......... backed up regularly originally on floppies, when I started using this laptop backed up onto USB drives, then when memory sticks came out I used that for backups. Trouble was, co-incidently, that memory stick died a couple of weeks ago and I lost everything on it.

Took the harddrive out and my local computer shop managed to recover all the 'My Documents' folder onto 3 DVDs along with my current accounts (now backed up in 37 millions places LOL). PHEW!!!

Now all this meant I only had my gig laptop, which I don't normally put on the 'net. So, the quest was on to quickly find a new laptop for gigging (current laptop has gigged for 4 years) so that I could relegate this laptop to home internet use. I spoke to the salesman in PC World and explained the hassles I had last year with a Dell Vostro then a Dell Studio 15. I asked if I could take in my external 500Gb hard drive, install my legit copy of VDJ and try running video. Suprisingly, they said yes!!! WOW!!! Didn't think they would allow that.

Tried an Acer 6930G-744 with a nVidia Geforce 9600GT with 1Gb onboard memory. Couldn't believe the video was freezing on loading for a significant time. Then tried an HP Pavilion with a similar graphics card with 512Mb onboard memory. It had a minor freezing problem, but, I could live with that. Then I discovered it was Vista 64bit, didn't know that there were drivers available for my AK1 soundcard, so, asked if they had anything else to try with Vista 32bit. They had an HP G70-213EM (17" screen) with nVidia Geforce 9200M GE with 256Mb onboard memory. It has a minor pause for a few milliseconds on loading a video. Can easily live with that. So I said "I'll buy it, but, I want a new one 'cos someones been using this one" LOL

Did some tests on Friday. As there are only 3 USB ports, I tried the external USB hard drive thru my powered hub, video was freezing on load with VOB files for a very small amount of time. Tried the hard drive connected directly to the laptop and the freezing seemed to be smaller, however, smaller AVI files were not freezing at all :-) I loaded a few VOB files onto the internal hard drive and found they were not freezing. So, this weeks task is to compress all my videos to AVI (with quality mp3 sound) and store them onto the internal hard drive. I'll keep the original VOB files on the external hard drive as backup, although, I have the original Promo Only DVDs anyway.

At last!!! A decent laptop that can do video!!! Had a fantastic time last night playing with the onscreen graphics and showing off their true potential. My USB video camera is much better too with very smooth and crystal clear 'live' pictures onscreen.

Jeez, I'm as happy as a pig in shit LOL :-) :-) :-)

glad you had a successful story :)

where did you shop where they let you install and test out VDJ?

got my packard bell from currys/pc world (same group) nearly two years ago and it's still working flawlessly, hope you have the same luck...

Best is, it's running Vista Home Premium with nothing turned off!!! Haven't optimised it yet, even the wireless network has been on all weekend with no problems whatsoever. Tried the DPC Latency Checker and I have all yellow bands but no reds even with the wireless network on. :-)

PC World, it's a national store in the UK found in most out of town shopping centres.
