Topic: Serato Itch vs. Virtual DJ

Hi,

I'm a long-time Virtual DJ user, but liked the look of the VCI-300 (which only works with Serato Itch), so picked one up a couple of weeks back. The hardware's very nice and the scratching is the best out there (mainly, I think, down to the hi-res midi), but Itch leaves a lot to be desired - e.g. the beatmatching algorithm doesn't work anywhere near as well as Virtual DJ's, so needs constant manual adjustment.

As a result I've switched to an EKS Otus controller (http://eks.fi/product.php?p=products&id=34) to work with Virtual DJ.

I'm happier with this, but wish Virtual DJ supported hi-res midi, which would improve the scratching a lot if my Itch experience is anything to go by. Any idea when this will happen?

Basically I have two alternatives:
1. Stick with the Otus/Virtual DJ and wait for hi-res midi to be supported for responsive scratching
2. Switch to the VCI-300/Itch and wait for the beat matching algorithm to improve

Any suggestions which way to go?

yeah look at what you want to do currently. Imagine as if all technology will stop. what would you be happy with right this second?
 
Vestax Vci300/Itch are working perfect - Itch soft is basic but with a good bpm engine - I'm waiting for native support , because I want to use it with Vdj .
BTW: Vci300 & Eks Otus are different kind of controllers , they aren't good for scratch ...if you want to scratch go for TCV or Numark Ns7 .

i understand your purest ideals but this statement is not really warranted the vci-300 ect are good for scratching
this is scratching no matter how you look at it.
 
those are some nice Vestax scratching..i tried scratching when u tried it at guitar center but i couldnt get it to scratch llike that...
 
sirkitbreaker you can also scratch with the ugly hercules console , but is not the point . Vci have a bad cut for scratch - If you like it for scratch just get it - But controllers are not good enought for scratch .If you have any doubt ask to Afrika Bambaataa or Q-Bert .
 

Yeah Afrika Bambaataa is cool..
But what you're saying in just not true ;)

One can scratch just fine on controllers, or CD players, emulating vinyl...
Or timecode emulating vinyl. No problem at all

Some DJs are used to the vinyl feel, and cant handle the new technology, but thats just a different story.

Point number 1 : everybody can scratch with hercules console or vestax vci300 , but what kind of scratch ?
Point number 2 : Some good scratchers can laught with the very basic scratchs (controllers) because you need good faders & cut options .
Point number 3 : U R right : Controllers are good for scratch .

i really dont need to ask them something i can see for myself. but next break dance event i attend i will ask mister bambaataa my self. to be exact i will probly have my vci-300 with me

Yes ...in your dreams ....and Mr Bambaattaa will scratch with Vci300 !!!
For serious scratch you need a good crossfader (vci300 haven't a decent one) - No one with a big name will scratch with a cheaper solution , they only use TT or maybe a good Cd player with direct drive .
But the rest (not big names) can use any controller just for fun , and it's ok , but we can't win the DMC with a controller , NEVER .
BTW : I love my Vestax Vci300

Don't worry . Nothing Personal , they are just different points of view .
This is a forum , is no necessary to think in the same way .

Maybe U2 - You can be the small brother of Bambaataa , but you can never convince him to scratch with a vci300 .
 
yeah and robbie bush may never drive a cooper but all that tells me is robbie bush may never drive a cooper

but back to the reason i posted in this thread to begin with. The choice to make is a good decision based on your needs and money. I dont want anyone to base an opinion on not to get something cause they are told you cant scratch on it. If it is the cut on the fader that is an issue there is a firmware coming out to fix that or you can stick a piece of plastic to fix it.....i can give more info on how i changed cuts on many fades in my day. but again you see the videos yyou see the scratching. Doesnt matter who is or isnt using it cause everyone has thier reasons. the main thing to figure is will it work for you

1) Can we scratch with a controller ? : Yes , we can
2) Can we do good scratches with a controller without direct drive ? No (only in my point of view )
3) is a controller like vci300 (700 euros) a good solution for scratch ? : No , with this money you can have 2 decent TT (better option for scratch) or
Numark CD-Player CDX for 500 euros .
You can do wiki waka ...ahh yeahh with a controller , but nothing serious .
4) Can Afrika Bambaataa do a scratch with vci300 ? Yes , he can , but sorry , I'm not Afrika Bambaataa , & you ??
5) Can I go to my friend's house (100 km) in bicycle ? yes I can , but the car is better ;-)

You sound like a dinosaur man.. lol ;)

And you should rephrase all those statements to "I can't " ... Just becuse you can't doesnt mean other djs cant.

Pioneer CDJs is NOT a turntable, it does NOT have a direct drive, yet its used at DMC championships and world champion scratchers...

Sorry dude, you're NOT one of them, and you are NOT all djs...

a lot of djs can scratch DAMN good on the VCI300, hence an offical Serato product even.

You sound like the djs that hated CDs when they came...

Its PERFECTLY ok, that you are used to direct drive turtables, and cant scratch on anything but that... But you can't pass your own experience there on to others... ;)

Many world class scratchers use CDJ-1000s already, and be prepared to see a lot of world class scratchers on super fast midi controllers such as VDI 300 ;)

Heck its already started, you can go watch at youtube

Post up your own scratch video please.... I doubt, from your statements, that you are much above waka waka... because else you'd know it aint the gear that makes the dj, its the dj that make the dj ;)

dj-in-norway Ok , you win , but you can't compare 1 rane mixer with vci300 vestax , they are in different level .
 
By all means... I'm NOT saying a VCI 300 is as good a "turntable" as Technics 1200...
And I'm NOT saying VCI 300 is as good a mixer as a Rane or Vestax

Just saying its possible to scratch on other grear than a traditional turntable with great results, although one might have to adapt new techniques to master the control..

Its not the gear often that is the limitation, but the DJ using it... And how well he uses it :)

That being said, I seriously doubt the Vestax VCI-300 feels as good as a real turntable (to those used to real turntable), or as a good a mixer as a real full blood pro mixer ;)

But that you can produce good results with it, I dont doubt at all :)

But if it looks cooler and better on real turntables, well thats of course a matter of personal opinion... But I would say it do..
Until we are used to seeing scratch djs using new gear at least ;)
 
just to clarify i can from turntable background and honestly love my controlers. that was part of the push that made me decide to stop waiting on the ns7. do i really miss anything about spinning platters? nope
