I am losing my mind, I decided against the Macbook pro and figured I would go with the Dell Xps Studio 16, the specs are great, the guy at Dell called it a "wicked fast machine." However, before placing my order I decided to run a few searches on the forums to see if anyone had any problems with the system I was getting. The only issue I found was that everyone is having problems with Vista in the 64bit edition. My new XPS comes with (Microsoft Windows Vista with SP1 Home Premium Edition 64-bit Edition English). I use the numark DJ Io sound card, am I going to have problems running virtual dj and the sound card with my new lap top? I really dont want to downgrade to the 32 bit verion, 1 because I am not really sure on how to do it and 2 I don't want to start messing with my new $2000 laptop. I wanted to order the laptop this weekend but want to wait and see what everyone says, thanks everyone!

VDJ will run fine.
But not all hardware have 64bit drives.
You could ask Numark if their soundcard is supported.

Norway is right .... don't get it unless Numark has your driver .......
also for $ 2000 my laptop has to mix my drinks , fire off annoying letters to my ex and drive my gf home .....
that's enough budget to make yourself a good diy unit with components a la carte .......some kinda small form factor...
not many apps or devices out there yet that are 64 bit ..... unfortunately since Vista has been so badly received , the roll out and wide spread
adoption of 64 bit anything is being delayed partly due to that

Is there some kind of feature in VISTA 64 Bit to run only in 32 Bit?
Just currious,

ok, so vdj will run fine but what about the DJ IO, from what im reading I will have to download that WoW program and then it will work?

No;
WoW64 is a translation layer for 32-bit applications, and is built into the x64 versions of windows. It will not support drivers. These have to be provided by the hardware manufacturers - and for Vista x64 SP1 onwards they need to be certified.
So your options are:
* Regrade to a 32-bit OS
* Buy a different soundcard
* Beg Numark to release x64 drivers
At this time, x64 drivers for typical DJ hardware are still thin on the ground. Make sure you check before you buy!

I tried the M-Audio Connectiv Sound Card. Just get that card and throw away the Torq stuff and VDJ will workfine. Also the M-Audio Torq w Vista x64 bit, works great.

Yes I am very sad as well..... After my laptop died on me, I decided it was time to upgrade and I bought a 64bit vista laptop. Then when I try to install it didn't work. And after doing some research, I found out VDJ and NVV will only work on a 32 bit computer. I e-mailed Numark about it and didnt get an answer back yet.
Any other ideas?!?!?!?!

Well, that's not really true. VirtualDJ and VV will work on a 64bit system, but it's the soundcard in the VV package that won't work, as there are no 64bit drivers for it yet.
So VirtualDJ with a 64bit capable soundcard such as the RMX, Maya44 and Gigaport will be just fine.

well said jimbo and thx for that......
i'm building a new "main" (gig rig) from the ground up and the maya 44 has crept onto my radar
64 bit can work , but there are a lot of "if's" ....VDJ in and of itself works .....the problem is will your controller and/or soundcard ??
there are a lot of items to consider when you are building a system ... i think the most important considerations are always ...do you have enough ram , do you have drivers for your controller and soundcard and does your graphics card have at least 256 mb ram ?

Be aware of the limitations of 64-bit windows though. Everyone keeps screaming about the increased RAM support, but VDJ isn't a native 64-bit application yet and hence runs under WoW64 which has it's own limitations:
MSDN wrote :
WOW64 enables 32-bit applications to take advantage of the 64-bit kernel. Therefore, 32-bit applications can use a larger number of kernel handles and window handles. However, 32-bit applications may not be able to create as many threads under WOW64 as they can on x86. On some processors, there is less virtual address space available, and each thread contains a 64-bit stack (usually 512K). On the x64 processor, each 32-bit application receives 4 GB virtual address space in the WOW64 environment, if the application has the IMAGE_FILE_LARGE_ADDRESS_AWARE flag set in the image header. If this flag is not set, the 32-bit application receives 2 GB virtual address space.

uuuhhhhh the only kernel i know much about has a 12 piece bucket ......
i think he said the increase in ram isn't as good as we wish it was ??????????

I am about to buy a new computer... looking at a DELL Studio 15 .. only comes in 64 bit ... i run VDJ with Hercules MK2 ... will i be able to run this with 64 bit? also i have a korg nano pad... will that be affected?

The MKII does have 64 bit drivers. Check with the Korg web site and see if they have 64bit drivers. But VDJ and my RMX work great on my 64 bit OS vista machine...
