Topic: Having Trouble Getting Gigs!

由于该帖子已年深日久,可能包含陈旧过时或描述错误的信息。

Trying to make the switch from mobile dj to resident Vdj and I am having trouble getting the gig. I have dropped off a buttload of cards at the bars and lounges in my area and have even gone on a few interviews but still no luck. It seems like everyone already has their Friday and Saturday Night VJ's. I have even been pushing weeknights and happy hours just so I can get in the door but the owners don't seem to want to spend the money. Anyone else having trouble locking up gigs? Im from north Jersey so there is a bar every mile. I also spend alot of time in the city and have dropped off cards at the bars in Manhattan. Getting a little frustrated but still trucking. I've even considered low balling the owners just so I can get my foot in the door until something better comes up.

Economy sucks right now, so alot of people do feel your pain. I can only suggest one thing, because like you said, all those places already have a DJ lined up. This business is more about who you know than what you know. So my suggestion would be to put together a killer demo. Your skills at their best on a cd. If I'm a bar owner, and I get a business card from a dj but I already have one, I'm throwin that business card in the trash. But if I get a demo, I'm likely to at least listen to it, maybe on the ride home in my car. So if you put together a really good demo, to show why you are a better dj than the guy they already have, you up your chances of landing a gig. Secindly, I wouldn't talk to much about it here but sometimes a lowball is what it takes just to get a job. If you don't find one soon, consider that option more in depth.

Not sure why you would want to break away from private work personally.
There is a lot more money to be made there instead.
I would contact other bigger dj companies and get hooked up.

I make DOUBLE and tripple working for a multi op that I made on my own.
I work for 4 of them now and still get my private gigs too.

Why should they hire you? What makes you different from anybody else applying?

You've got to stand out and provide something other djs in the area can't provide. Provide something unique that makes you better than the other djs applying for the same job. Our economy being in a state of hot garbage isn't going to help you either...

ok like said above demos are better than cards. If you are BETTER than the dj playing or atleast different that helps. I you just offer the same thing then why switch. You need friends who go to these bars and clubs. have you face know. know the bartenders. If you can get the bartenders more sales then they will talk you up. give your demo to the bar tender the owner and the guy that is there every week. I persaonally am a dancer and my friends are too. so we go to the clubs and dance up a storm then we tell the owner i am a dj... when a bad dj is performing we dont dance. then the girls stop dancing . the manager sees that and bam there is doubt about thier current dj. One thing i did notice is dj's now a days are a dime a dozen and very unproffessional. ( not all) an good business head will have you working real soon

Im not so sure that cards and demo cds will do it, i say it because ive been ther and ive done that.
My suggestion is to call people you know in the industry, friends are a great source, and get hooked up with promoters, if these guys know you and like you they will push to have you dj for them.
Currently dealing with 4 promoters, and trying to sucker in a 5th, im currently resident thursdays, fridays, saturdays, and sundays, and trying to pick something up on a wednesday... all thanks to promoters and people in the industry whom ive met through friends...

probably he wants to get a regular gig....
I can understand that

What he needs to be is different... If you are good.. or should i say.. blow the patrons away... they will bite
Yeah.... sometimes regularity really beats.... private djs.....

Personally why not do both?

I dont do regular gigs... patrons... clubs.. cannot afford what i charge for video juggling
Just not going to drop my rate... for chicken feed

Get yourself registered with an agency is one avenue. Being independent i never did however many times i have had calls to cover Club work. I can understand why i stay independent because some agency pays shit and you have to wait a month or so for the invoice to clear with certain big agencys in the UK.
