Topic: Need Advice on Notebook Purchase

由于该帖子已年深日久,可能包含陈旧过时或描述错误的信息。

Hi,

After 2 years my Acer Notebook gave way yesterday. The Technician at the Acer repair centre said the motherboard had died and that its not worth repairing it. Pretty upset as I wanted to use it for accessing the internet and other stuff and purchase another notebbok for VDJ , Ableton and other music production stuff.
Now I need advice on a New Notebook which I'll be using to ONLY mix Audio. I was saving up to get a Macbook Pro early next year, but now have no choice but to stick with a PC as I havent saved up enough. I'll probably get another system sometime next year which will only be for playing Gigs.

Im looking at getting an ASUS notebook, my choice is limited as most new systems are now coming with Vista. The Specs are mentioned in the links below :

http://www.asus.com.au/products.aspx?l1=5&l2=26&l3=316&l4=0&model=1660&modelmenu=2

http://www.asus.com.au/products.aspx?l1=5&l2=26&l3=316&l4=0&model=1662&modelmenu=2

Both machines come with the option which allows me to switch to XP Pro for an extra $90. I'm not quite sure but dont machines which come with Windows Vista Business allow a free downgrade to XP ??

How are ASUS Notebooks in general for Audio Mixing?

As i dont mix Video does it really matter if the notebook has a dedicated graphics card or not?

"*Systems configured with 4GB memory or more: Up to 1GB may not be available with 32-bit operation systems due to system resource requirement." could someone please explain what this means. Is XP Pro 32 bit or 64 bit?

As I'll be running Live 6 and Reason too, should I upgrade to 3GB of RAM or is 2 GB sufficient?

Is there a significant difference between a 5400RPM and 7200RPM Hard Drive?

Any feedback would be much appreciated as I need to get a Notebook ASAP.

Asus is a great brand, making good laptops...

And for audio mixing only, ANY NEW pc will do, as all new pc's have the power needed (only for video mixing you need to be more careful)

1 gig ram, XP, or 2 gig ram Vista, and you're rockin.. .

Focus rather on getting a good external soundcard, as laptops have crap internal cards. And THAT part will matter lots ;)

Thanks alot mate!!

asus is a good make indeed many other laptop manufacturers use their cases and parts

4gb is the max but each mother board accepts a different amount

so you will need to check the max for each model

Thanks for the feedback guys!

Initially i was goint to use the Old machine to access the internet and the new one only for Music apps , but now I'll have to use the new machine to access the internet aswel atleast for the next 3months or so, I was wondering if there's a way of dual booting the notebook one to access the internet and another instance to only to run VDJ, Ableton and other music apps ?? I've got the McAfee Security Suite but stil have my doubts as to if this is full proof.

The other option would be to get a 13'' Macbook and run XP via Boot Camp. I wont be updating my external soundcard for atleast another two months. I'm currently using the Hercules MK1 as my soundcard routed to an external mixer. Would I be able to use the Hercules as my soundcard running OSX ? or XP via bootcamp ?

Cheers

check my blog for info on creating a dual boot for vdj / other apps

the mk2 will work on mac and xp

i use bootcamped vdj and mac vdj too its super :)

Good choice (although you, as many windows to Mac switchers do, may realize that you don't need windows at all!) - ;)

Especially since the MacBooks just got updated last Thursday with much better graphics chipsets (GMA X3100 / 144Mb SDRam which supports hardware transform and lighting - much better for graphics intensive tasks like gaming and handling video - vs. the previous GMA 950 / 64Mb SDram and ... that's it), as well as now having the 64-bit Santa Rosa platform Intel Core 2 Duo processors with 133Mhz faster (per processor - so x 2 - VDJ is multi-threaded too to take advantage of this) 800Mhz frontside buses that that new graphics chipset required in order to be used in the MacBook line AND is why the new MacBooks also can now be upgraded to 4Gb's of system ram!

Here's the thread I started last week regarding the new MacBooks: http://www.virtualdj.com/forums/79788/MAC_Version_Technical_Support/Nov__1__07_-_Apple_releases_NEW_MACBOOKS_.html

Also, if you're wondering how a Mac handles windows (100% natively BTW), well, often times , everythings just better on a Mac:

PC Magazine: "The fastest Windows Vista notebook we've tested this year is a Mac."

Gotta love the irony! ;)

Remember, your computer's only as strong as it's weakest link, and too often the weakest link with windows computers is windows itself. Get a Mac, limit your windows useage to an "as needed only" basis (specific windows only applications, if any) on that Mac, and use the Mac for everything else that requires reliability, security, productivity, and longevity.

isn't that a James (god rest his funky soul) Brown song ??? it's a Mac , Mac , Mac Mac world?
