yes first the stylus and then the whole assembly need to be replaced..I hope that helps. I do not have enough knowledge to tell what is best anymore.... Try www.pssl.com for replacement stylus.

The stylus and cartridge are two separate items and as posted the stylus (the needle part) will wear out. I've had cartridges last years of heavy play without breaking down but stylus replacement is normal maintenance.

Old gramophone needles were made from thorns and had to be changed almost every time you played a record - fortunately, they were sold in large quantities.

Modern-day styli, if looked after correctly, can last for years in a domestic hi-fi turntable - but, with the rough treatment that turntable DJs give them (spinning them packwards, cueing them up and suchlike), the longevity is reduced - but, if carefully looked after, they can also last for years.

Even so, it's always a good idea to make sure you have backup styli at a gig - or just play stuff off CD.

Mind you - here's me doling out free advice - I rarely practice what I preach!

Hardly used turntables much at gigs. Best to buy proper DJ turntables (though they cost more), as domestic turntables and styli aren't designed to withstand the unavoidably rough treatment that DJs put them through, whereas properd DJ turntables and styli can withstand anything short of being hit with a sledgehammer!

I am quite rough on my setup and had a pair of Stanton 500 styli last for a year and a half. Current pair of Shure carts and styli are about a year into with no signs of problems. Stanton cart is still fine after replacing styli so that's three years for that piece.
