Hi all,
im in the market for a Macbook pro, and would like to know the performance/quality difference between 128 and 256 mg video.
The reason i ask is that there are two configurations that i can purchase
please see ad:
http://www.bookstore.washington.edu/pdf/apple_laptops04_10_07.pdf
staff pricing is as follows;
system A 2.16ghz 128mb video :$1699
system B 2.33ghz 256mb video :$2199
The differences i see are processor/ram and video card. will a 128mb card be sufficient for VDJ and video. system A looks good, i dont really want to spend the extra $500 for system B if i dont need to. *(i have 2gigs of 677 ddr2 from my current laptop that can go straght into the MBP, so ram is not an issue)
Any help on this will be greatly appreciated
thanks!

I use VDJ to play video using CDJ's with timecode. and I own and older 1.83ghz MacBook Pro with 128MB video and it runs VDJ more then adequately. So there is no need to spend the extra $500 unless you have money to burn. From my experience VDJ performance relies heavily on the CPU and not on the videocard. This doesn't mean you can use and on board shared video because that won't due, but upgrading to the fastest video card on the market won't speed up the performance any more then an average mid end graphics card.

I would personally never buy a previous generation computer. My advise, go with the 2.33ghz. Why not have the better video card...Do you make $ when you DJ or do you just play at home. If you use if in an environent where you make dollars its worth the investment. You'll always get a better resale value also. Check out the apple website and look for the refurbished models. You can get the 2.33ghz 15" for $1999. Same warranty but they dont come along very often. I checked the site earlier for a friend and they didn't have any in stock, but it updates every couple of days.
I personally own a Macbook Pro 17" 2.33ghz and I upgraded the hardrive to 200gb. I don't mind paying for the best equipment.

If you are purchasing it soley for VDJ, then the 128mb card is good enough. In my opinion, if you have a fast enough CPU, this will compensate for a videocard with less ram. I had a HP with HYPER MEMORY and didnt notice anythinh different if it had 128 or 256mb of ram..

The lower end MBP will be fine for video features but more will always be better when it comes to ram, especially non-upgradeable video ram.
I would highly advise you to wait about a month until Apple's annual WWDC http://developer.apple.com/wwdc/ .
Two things will happen by that time if not beforehand; 1) updated MBP's will be introduced at the same price as the current models and 2) the current models will drop in price and be a better buy should the newly updated models not be a significant enough upgrade to justify the existing prices ( I highly doubt that they won't though... you'll want the new MBP's).

Thank you all for your advice. you all have good points (which gives me more to think about) the smart choice i guess, will be to wait out till the new macs are released in the comming few weeks and see what effects that has on the market as far as pricing on older models, hopefully i will be able to pick up a good deal. Untill then i will have to put up with the Vaio!

Comqest is right. Wait till the new MBP models are released and then snatch up the new model for the same price or the current model for even less... Really in the end it all comes down to how much money you can afford as all the MBP current models are more then enough to handle VDJ and more.

Whatever you do, you'll realize a MAC can do everything a PC does and so much more:)

You know guys, that really was the only thing I worried about also. The video card included with the MBP's. I know Apple makes top notch hardware, but would the specs of the video cards included with the macbooks be good enough? 256MB video memory max?
I didnt like that you don't have the option to upgrade to a better video card for the mbp's when shopping at the apple website.
I mean to simultaneously run two videos, effects, and everything else you throw at the machine without any hiccups?
From the way you guys sound, I am guessing the answer is yes, without a problem. I just hope the new MBP's will have even better video cards.
dj_jrg, those prices are better than the education prices at the apple website. Are those only for college professors or students? Who would qualify for those prices and where can you get them? Thanks.

Killabee44: The prices on that pdf are applicable to University Of Washington students/faculty/staff. I luckly all under the the saff category. The promotion is $100 MBP / $50 MB less than the academic prices. (stock on hand) It also looks as if they are clearing out current stock in anticipation for the new models (fingers crossed!)

Yep, they are clearing them out. That's what it seems like. I read that the new updated macbooks are already out. The new macbook pros will be out shortly. I am waiting on those. They are supposed to have a better video card, chipset, and a new brighter lcd.
