Well - now - that was an impressive psot.
If Mr Howard is still cruising the site:
Can you provide any information on any Upcoming video download service?
I am in Canada and have actually never heard of your company other than on here. Promoonly operates an Audio download store ( www.podds.ca ), and according to the nice saleslady in Calgary, Video is trying to get online as well.
Any information would probably be enlightening.

@funkturnal, so anything goes for you? This is the new breed thinking. It is so easy now, that anyone can steal the tools of the trade, and become a DJ. What would you have done when there were no mp3s? If there was a hot record out, you did the leg work to get it. You went from record store to record store, call the label, stood out side the labels door. Sometimes, it was an all week thing, just to get that cut before Thur night. Then it was very easy to separate the men from the boys. Do I benefit from the new technology, you bet I do. I don't remember the last time I was in a record store. However, I pay for everything I have, or it won't get played. My show will not die, because I don't have the hot cut tonight. I would never play a video with MTV or BET on it, but that is just me. You do what you have to do, and can pick and choose the laws you want to obey.

Sorry Marcel,
Both of us are on this. The story is... while bandwidth is getting cheaper, licensing for video is a completely different animal from audio. It's long and complicated, but suffice to say we see your need and are trying to address it as we have in the past.
As to Screenplay in Canada, we apologize. Haven't gotten to that yet as it will require a completely different program as per the AVLA guidelines. Again, that will change as well.
Call me directly if I can answer any questions for you.
Again, sorry to have ignored your question.
Regards,
DH

Anything doesn't go for me.....but some people drive 55mph in 45mph while others don't. I'm like you havent been to the record store in years. I never lived in a city where the labels were located so I never had that up. But I was I on the phone just about everyday with the labels doing my part. I still get service til this day. But unfortuantely the reps aren't so eager to get there hands on videos. Yes technology makes things easier but now instead the men have more time to market themselves when the boys will just stay home & hang out.

Most people don't stick up gas stations either. Because it's against the law.... and it's wrong.
And you're not anonymous Marco...

I know that many djs making the transition into video think they know the ins and outs.
Long time ago I got the down low on video and copy write laws, and as Doug says video is a totally different animal. It's like messing with momma bears cubs, a risk with grave consequences if you make the wrong move.
We've all seen the dbags with the stolen vh1 and mtv crap up on the screens.
They are stealing the cubs and are taking the chance on going down.
Making remixes is something that is technically taboo, we've all done it ie: demo discs and so on.
But keep it on the down low and recover what you've created, don't let it get out or you could hang.
The thing that really pisses me off (and you I hope) is the dbags that get the gigs with the stolen crap after the thousands I've spent on video. I know we want to be current with music, but the wait is not worth the jail time if you get busted.
The game is changing but the rules are not, so be careful what you do.
There are people watching what you do, and you just saw how fast that site came down.

anonymous?? every video I make, I say my name (sep its Marco) funkturnal is a forum name....everyone here knows my name.
Comparing sticking up a gas station is a crazy extreme. Djs are promoting the music....go get the bootleggers that are selling to the consumers.
If I record a mtv vid and play it okay.....in a month I will get the official copy in the mail. So your telling me the labels wouldn't want me to help promote there track for that month...VERY DOUBTFUL.
Crazy thought.....imagine vdj or "..." with a system like bds. Maybe my son will see it.
Radio will change one day...hopefully this ppm thing will acctually happen....bye bye arbitron.

Can you "share"? I don't know the laws and regulations myself but how do Peer to Peer sites survive?
I'm fairly new to Digital DJ/VJin. I own Serato (but rarely use) and am getting the VV with Total Control mixer as soon as avaliable. At this point I still go to my local record stores for vinyl and still purchase alot of CD's. But I have downloaded shared content here and there.
What about sharing music and/or videos that I purchased (through promo or whoever) with other DJ's? Not selling for profit, but pooling.
How do these sites survive then? (www.crooklynclan.com - MP3's, www.mashuptown.com - videos) I have friends with remixes on their sites. Is it because they use the term "donation"?
Im interested because im moving to VDJ/CUE with all music video sets.

This thread has really been an eye opener.. where legality is concerned.......
I know of a fact that most vdjs get in problems in clubs.. when requests are made for them to play the hot new vids........... that are not available to them
" what we need to understand is that music channels on television are setting the standards of what patrons want to hear in clubs nowadays"
Akon "Don't Matter" plays over and over.......... it is everywhere.. (this can be captured... at is first world premiere..whether from bet...mtv...vh1.. the works)... at the same time the patrons first see it"
This means that the next day the vdj.. can introduce this vid in his playlist....(
removing the logos can be done easily especially if the vids are in wide screen format. and quality can be pretty awesome... if you have a digital feed with the right capture device
The problem is that vdjs wait for more than a month to get these video releases.. by then the song is either overplayed... (the truth of the matter though is that even though they may do this... they eventually end up receiving and using the proper video in the long run the legitimate way)
All we need is a lightning fast provider for these vids.... (which might never.. ever be possible).. of course.. if these videos were downloadable......from these sites... at a price.. then that would certainly help)
"the question then is what do we do as vdjs"....... it would really be nice if Promo only
